Barzani Demands EU Not to Oppose God-Given Natural Rights of Kurdish People

Barzani Demands EU Not to Oppose God-Given Natural Rights of Kurdish People

ERBIL— Kurdistan Region President on Thursday called on the European Union (EU) to not oppose the rights of the people of the Kurdistan Region for holding the independence referendum from Baghdad.

Masoud Barzani also underlined for Iraq and Kurdistan to become two neighbors is the only option left out in order to avoid additional wars, calamities and threats.

President Barzani made the comments as he received in his office in Erbil a delegation of European consuls, led by Patrick Simon, the president of the EU mission in Iraq.

In the meeting, where the leaders from the major political parties in Kurdistan, including secular and religious-oriented parties, were present, President Barzani also touched on the factors that pushed Kurdistan Region to plan the referendum.

Barzani explained to the delegation that from the establishment of the Republic of Iraq in 1921 to 2003, Kurds were deprived of power-sharing and citizenship rights while 4,500 villages of Kurdistan were destroyed, 180,000 Kurdish individuals became victims of Anfal process, and large swathes of Kurdistan came under chemical gas attack by the Baath regime.

As of 1991 and thanks to the proclamation of no fly zone in favor of the Kurdistan Region, Kurdish people opened a new chapter and for the sake of territorial unity of Iraq and peace reconciled with those who committed genocide against them, said Barzani.

“Unfortunately, that also did not work because the dominating mentality in Baghdad was the culture of sidelining and criminalizing people of Kurdistan,” he remarked.

Barzani added after the fall of the Baath regime in 2003, with hopes for a new life, the Kurdish authorities exerted the best of their efforts to help in reconstructing a country on the bases of democracy, federalism, constitution, power-sharing and consensus, “But all these principles were overlooked and infringed by the successive Iraqi governments.”

“It came to a point that as a political punishment, the sustenance of the entire people of Kurdistan was suspended and this was a dangerous termination to all the efforts for power-sharing,” stated Barzani in reference to the budget cut of Kurdistan Region since 2014.

Barzani also made reference to the massacre of the Kurdish Yezidi people in Sinjar, Nineveh province, by the Islamic State (IS) organization as another outcome of the sanctions against the Kurdistan Region and its Peshmerga forces, who are deprived from funds and weaponry by the Iraqi government for several years.

The Iraqi government did not protect Kurdish people and other components against the extremists who held the most sophisticated weapons, Barzani said.

Kurdistan Region President described Kurdish understanding of the Republic of Iraq as “a bitter experience,” for they tried all measures for protecting the territorial unity of Iraq by making big sacrifices and giving big prices which proved futile.

He added now that the power-sharing principle is not respected by Baghdad and in order to avoid additional wars, calamities and threatening issues “Let’s be two neighbors living next to each other.”

Kurdistan President also stressed there is no turning point in the decision to run the referendum on September 25, 2017 and based on the results Kurdistan leadership will seek all peaceful measures and dialogue routes with Baghdad to work out an understanding that can serve peace and development for both Baghdad and Erbil as well as the region.

Despite all the disputes and differences with the Iraqi government, Peshmerga supported Iraqi forces, Barzani said, underlining coordination with the Iraqi army to combat terrorism will remain Kurdistan Region’s priority.

Barzani also demanded the EU to support the people of Kurdistan in their appeal for independence which he described as “legitimate, natural, and God-given right,” stressing the people of Kurdistan also expect the EU to support them in overcoming the obstacles.

During the meeting, the EU Representative in Iraq Patrick Simon alluded to the meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels on June 19,2017, stating that the participants to the assembly reiterated their support for Kurdistan Region in dealing with the challenges and issues.

The official highlighted that Erbil-Baghdad relations are of significance for the EU which stresses the entire Iraqi components avoid unilateral decision and unite in the face of terrorism and for establishing peace.

I don't like the sound of this but have to say that the Kurds deserve credit ( not Barzani ) for putting up with Baghdad for so long..

Barzani says alternative of referendum is war

Barzani's words about the KRG referendum on the French TV show he is in the wrong about the future of northern Iraq

The president of the Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Masoud Barzani has declared that the Sept. 25 independence referendum cannot be scrapped or delayed and any action to halt it will make a bloodbath in the region. What he does not realize is that if he goes ahead with his threat to hold the referendum and then proclaim an independent Kurdish state on Iraqi territory, he will be leading his people in northern Iraq into certain disaster, which is the last thing we need in our volatile region.

The Kurds of Iraq, who have established their own autonomous region in Duhok, Irbil and Suleimaniyah, have managed to make a safe haven for their people since the First Gulf War. After the occupation of Iraq by the Americans that overthrew the Saddam Hussein regime, the Kurds have had an easy ride in Iraq. Their region was never hit by the violence that wreaked havoc in the rest of Iraq and thus they managed to form a relatively stable environment in their part of the country. They developed their own oil fields and managed to prosper in their own region.

However, they do have serious grievances that are understandable. The Shiite majority of Iraq has been systematically alienating not only the Sunni Arabs but also the minority Kurds. The central government of Baghdad is supposed to be a coalition of Shiite and Sunni Arabs as well as Kurds. But this has turned out to be an uneasy relationship where the Shiite does not treat the Kurds as partners. Besides, the central government was supposed to be paying 17 percent of Iraq's oil revenues to the Kurds but it has not done this on a routine basis and is using it as leverage on the Kurds.

The thing is, Baghdad has been in continuous disarray and thus the Kurds have always been kept in limbo. Added to all this was the confusion in the country after the invasion of a huge chunk of the country by Daesh, which has further added to the volatility of the country. So Barzani feels his people can no longer tolerate this situation and thus wants to go his own way. His representatives in Ankara, addressing a seminar on Wednesday, were saying that the approval of independence in a referendum would not mean the Kurds would declare a state overnight but would strengthen their hand in negotiating with Baghdad.

But that is not what Barzani said to French TV on Thursday. He said the Kurds can no longer wait and have to go their own way. If the Kurds are blocked, this will mean a bloodbath in the region. This is not true. The Kurds cannot afford to take on the whole world and try to impose their will on the international community. When the interviewer pointed out that Turkey, Iran, the U.S. and others oppose the referendum, he denied that was the case. Yet, that is the case. Only Israel has said it will not object to a Kurdish state in the north of Iraq but no other country has joined them. On the contrary everyone has vocally opposed it.

Turkey has tried everything to discourage Barzani from taking such a step. Yet it is interesting that Barzani has told his people that Turkey in fact is supportive of the referendum. Someone in Ankara has to repeat the fact that Ankara is deeply concerned that this referendum will bring catastrophe for the Kurds of Iraq. Turkey wants a united Iraq, not a divided one. The Kurdish leader is dragging his people into a great adventure where the outcome may well be that the Kurds will lose all the gains they have achieved in the past decade.

The barzanis have been stealing billions from Kurdistan and Iraq for years. Between them and the talibanis they're have accumulated billions off the backs of the people. Time to send them packing and put a more progressive leadership in power. If they get their independence who will stop him from becoming another ahole dictator? Not a team player

Iraq, June 22, 2017

Samples of the proposed Kurdish currency were leaked out in preparation of the coming independence referendum.

A Kurdish designer is planning to make 10 designs for the new Kurdish currency, which idea was started in 1994, when the Kurdish region got its autonomy from the previous Iraqi regime with the assistance of the United States.

It was proposed that the new banknotes will cover parts of the Kurdish history, not Iraq's.

Some Kurdish sources reported that President Masoud Barzani is pressing to put the photo of his father Mustapha Barzani as political and tribal symbol, but some other Kurdish politicians rejected the idea, because the father fled the region to be protected by Iranian ruler in 1975.

We're seeing articles promoting the separation of Kurdistan . . . not so much from those against the idea of separation: either in the future or right now. If someone can convince me [ us ] as to why this is a good idea at this moment in time, I'm willing to listen.

Trotting out designs of Kurdish currency to Gin up support is irresponsible and detrimental to long term financial goals. Is Pushing for Kurdish Independence ASAP really the end game with ALL that is happening a good idea right now ?    Perhaps that's a rhetorical question, because I think that answer is, NO.

Somethings not adding up here. Even if the referendum passes, it will take some time to put the pieces of the Independent Kurdistan puzzle together. If ALL this is somehow designed to PUSH Iraq out of Ch7 into Ch8 - RV and so on; Perhaps that just might work [ the hidden agenda will to come out later ].

Without all the much needed vital Protocols in place, a knee jerk Kurdish action for secession might spell fiscal suicide and lead to political & social upheaval.  Let's jump the Shark, wake up tomorrow and Kurdistan is an independent nation with NO currency except for our designs we've trotted out. They're still arguing about the designs. Who's going to print the bills. Do the expect secession and use the IQD ?

Questions & more Questions. Iraq appears to be on the verge of CH8/RV/Reforms galore and The Kurds want to be the Monkey that Tosses the Spanner into the GEARS. Makes no sense.

What a mess > Thanx & time for a beer :cheesehead:

They may have received their autonomy with the help of the US.  Only for the purpose of there being the United States of Iraq. If they actually go this route, they would be autonomous states with a federated states of Iraq. No such state should have their own currency. They could issue their own bonds or T bills, which need to be in IQD. Breaking up the country would be a really bad decision.

Kurdish Independence is too early to prospect? The most likely scenario is an initial Dinar true rate, infrastructure rebuilding, investment from foreign sources will start occurring during the same time period Kurds attempting to secede from Iraq. Therefore, a lot positive things occurring while Kurds dividing from Central Government ? Most likely, Kurds will stay part of Iraq when all is done! The Dinar we hold will come out of program rate either way. So, don't worry, besides to divide and form a new government has got to be a long drawn out process internationally. By that time The Properity happening throughout the region will convince Kurds to resend their plans to divide. The international community also knows Iraq is the key to success of Muslims, and Christians living together in the Middle East. I've explained the Allah/Ali Muslim differences in religious ideology, now the political solutions are playing out now. Ramadan ends June 26th, parliament in session, and they are telling you oil and gas is top list priority. We are sitting in good position. Stability at hand, finally!
