Iraqi forces launch final battle to retake Old City, Nuri Mosque in Mosul

Lieutenant-General Raed Shaker Jawdat, Iraq's Federal Police Forces commander, said on Sunday that his forces will launch the final stage of liberating the Old City and the the Great Mosque of al-Nuri, located in Mosul's right bank. 

He noted that federal police divisions have completed liberating targets within the first stage of northern axis operations.

 He added that during these operations 10 vital targets have been liberated, including al-Eqtisadieen and 17 Tamouz neighborhoods. 

 Iraqi police divisions are currently stationed in the southern suburbs of 17 Tamouz neighborhood, Jawdat stated.

 He said that this move paves the way for launching the final stage of the battle, heading towards al-Zanjili and Bab Sinjar districts. 

 He added that it also smoothes the way for entering the Old City and liberating al-Nuri Mosque and Al-Hadba' Manaret. 

 In the meantime, southern axis divisions resume launching  military attrition operations against ISIS in Bab al-Toub, Qadib al-Ban and Bab al-Jadid, Iraq's Federal Police Forces commander said. 

 He noted that these divisions have targeted ISIS barracks and fortifications in the area surrounding al-Nuri Mosque.   

 Military operations in Nineveh Governorate, launched last October, have reached their final stages after liberating most of the governorate districts from ISIS' grip.

Iraqi Falcon Intelligence Cell's explosives experts have dismantled a laboratory for booby-trapping vehicles in 17 Tamouz neighborhood in Mosul's right bank, a security source told The Baghdad Post on Monday. 

The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, said that 10 vehicles, which have been prepared to be booby-trapped in the laboratory, have been discovered.




The laboratory has been dismantled and explosives inside it have been confiscated, the source noted. 
The source also hailed the efforts of bomb disposal engineering team in the Iraqi army, currently defusing explosive devises ISIS planted on the roads of 17 Tamouz neighborhood. 





Security forces, backed by International Coalition air raids and logistic support of the US army, have retaken eastern Mosul and half of its western part after six months of battles. These forces are focusing now on controlling the Old City.




  
It is estimated that there are a few of ISIS terrorists left in the second largest city of Iraq. It is expected that they will desperately defend the last pocket of the city that has been once their main stronghold in Iraq.

11 ISIS terrorists killed in airstrikes in Nineveh

At least 11 ISIS terrorists have been killed in series of airstrikes carried out by Iraqi war planes in al-Ba'aj district in Nineveh governorate, The Baghdad Post cited security sources. 

In a statement, war media cell said that the strikes were based of tip-offs provided by Iraqi Intelligence and Federal investigations.

The strikes also destroyed an ISIS fuel depot as well as depots of arms and ammunition, the statement added. 

This comes as the Iraqi forces have been pushing on the terror group of ISIS in the right bank of the city with the aid of the US-led coalition.

ISIS detains civilians in Mosul right bank

 

 

ISIS terrorists had detained a number of innocent families in al-Zanjili area in the right bank of Mosul city in Nineveh governorate, a well-informed source told the Baghdad Post on Monday.
 

The source added that the ISIS militants are now stationed inside the police station building.

Security forces did not attack the police station due to the innocent civilians detained inside it, the source said, adding that the forces are advancing at various axes to restore the right bank of the city from the terrorist group.

Iraqi Forces launched a major offensive on 19th of February to retake the western part of Mosul after declaring total control of the eastern part of the city on 24th of January as part of the military operations to liberate the city that started on 17th of October 2016.

2 Suicide bombers blew themselves up inside training camp in Diyala

Two suicide bombers had blew themselves up on Monday insider Kirkush training camp in Balad Ruz town in west of Baqubah in  Diyala governorate.
 

A number of army personnel were killed and injured during the attack.

Kirkush training camp was used a US military training base aka  Caldwell or Caldhell.

Kirkush is located some 90 km northeast of Baghdad and 20 km from the Iranian border. Until the US Army arrived, it was an abandoned Iraqi military facility. Construction had begun in the mid-1980s and ceased in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State has evacuated its members and leaders after bringing down its flags from one of its main strongholds in western Anbar town of Qaim, on borders with Syria.

“IS militants evacuated its local, Arab and foreign members and leaders from all of the group’s headquarters in Qaim town,” Sputnik quoted a local source from Anbar as saying.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the members and leaders moved to new secret headquarters outside of Qaim and headed toward the Iraqi western desert.

IS, according to the source, “has adopted the new plan after huge losses were inflicted on the group due to airstrikes launched by Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition fighter jets, which targeted its havens, killing and injuring hundreds of members over the past months.”

In April, Qutri al-Obeidi, a leader with the paramilitary al-Hashd al-Shaabi troops said IS members were evacuated from Rawa town towards Qaim after the leaders ordered the fighters, along with their families, to leave due to intensified airstrikes.

Anbar’s western towns of Annah, Qaim and Rawa have been held by the extremist group since 2014, when it emerged to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate.

Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the international coalition have also regularly pounded IS locations in the province. The Iraqi government is expected to aim at those strongholds once the Mosul battle is concluded.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi government forces took over al-Najjar district in western Mosul on Monday, the Defense Ministry War Media Cell said as troops moved one more step towards the Islamic State-held Old City.

The media outlet said Iraqi forces recaptured the district and raised Iraqi flags above its buildings. Al-Najjar was one of a handful of remaining districts Iraqi forces are battling IS in to pave the way towards the ancient Old City, the highly prized target from where IS supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” over large parts of Iraq and neighboring Syria.

Earlier this month, Iraqi government troops changed tactics and started charging at the Old City from the northwest, having besieged the area for weeks futilely from the south.

The impassable streets of the densely populated area, and the  high number of civilians believed  to be held as human shields there has made the invasion of the Old City a very delicate endeavor.

The Iraqi Joint Operations Command said recently it controls at least 89.5 percent of territory in western Mosul. Operations to retake that section of the city launched mid February. Eastern Mosul was recaptured in January. Some generals predict the city to be cleared from IS militants by the end of this month.

Seven militants killed in western Mosul airstrike, bridge installed for civilians evacuation

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Seven Islamic State militants were killed Monday when a drone from the U.S.-led coalition targeted their location in western Mosul.

Air force lieutenant Yazan Abdul-Kafi told Rudaw network that the drone pounded a house in Zanjili district which militants occupied. The strike killed all seven and destroyed their truck.

Zanjili is one of the few remaining districts Iraqi forces are sweeping through on their way to the Old City, Islamic State’s last bastion in Mosul.

Meanwhile, Iraqi forces continued preparations to install a floating bridge linking western Mosul with the eastern side. Lt. Abdul-Salam al-Jubouri, from the Iraqi army, told Rudawy the bridge could hopefully facilitate troops movement and the transfer of refugees evacuated from the west to the east.

The five bridges linking Mosul’s flanks above the Tigris River had been destroyed in airstrikes late last year to prevent IS militants from escaping to the west as Iraqi forces retook the eastern region.

ِAnbar (IraqiNews.com) Fighter jets from the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State have killed dozens of the group’s members and destroyed their combat vehicles in a raid in western Anbar, a military source was quoted saying.

The convoy was arriving from Syria to Iraq’s Anbar, the source was quoted saying by Alsumaria News.

Islamic State militants have held Anbar’s western towns of Annah, Qaim and Rawa since 2014. Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the allied U.S.-led coalition have also regularly pounded IS locations in the province. Local officials believe Islamic State is holding thousands of civilians at its western strongholds to use them as human shields against any future security offensive.

 

The Iraqi government and army commanders say they will  aim at IS havens in Anbar once they are finished with eliminating the group from Mosul, its biggest bastion in Iraq. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had said that as the battle in Mosul approached its end, securing the Iraqi borders with Syria at Anbar became a top priority.

Islamic State has escalated its attacks against army and paramilitary forces in the province over the past few months, leaving several personnel dead. It has also executed dozens of civilians over charges of collaboration with security forces or attempting to flee the group’s domains.

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (10:15 P.M.) – ISIS published a lengthy video on Sunday showing a series of executions on alleged Kurdish and government spies in the Iraqi province of Kirkuk.

Forced to write pro-ISIS slogans with their own blood, the Kurdish prisoners of war were either beheaded or shot in the head, in some cases with high-caliber rifles. In characteristic ISIS fashion, the executions were carried out by Kurdish members of the Islamic State.

ISIS still controls a pocket in the Hawija region of western Kirkuk although this region was cutoff from the Islamic State mainland last year.

Islamic State prepares last stand in Mosul as Iraqi troops liberate more residential areas

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (0:00 A.M.) – Given the current rate of advance, the battle for Mosul is expected to be over within a couple of weeks, culminating in an excruciating defeat for the Islamic State.

On Monday, the Iraqi Army was able to impose full control over the Najjar neighborhood and wipe out a couple of ISIS sniper nests on the western bank of the Tigris River.

 

 

Effectively, government troops can now focus their attention on the last three ISIS-held districts in the heart of Mosul; namely the so-called Old City, Al-Zinjili and Al-Shafaa neighborhoods.

Surrounding this ISIS pocket are the Iraqi Federal Police on the southern axis, Rapid Response Division on its western axis and elements of the Counter Terrorism Units on the northern axis. Some troops of the 9th Division are also still deployed inside the city, military sources inform Al-Masdar News.

Meanwhile, more ready-made ISIS car bombs were seized in the newly liberated areas while hundreds of sappers continue to do their dangerous demining task throughout Iraq’s second largest city.

Less than 500 ISIS fighters are said to have survived the Iraqi onslaught. However, these insurgents have now fortified the Old City in a desperate bid to keep hold of the highly symbolic Al-Nouri mosque, the site where Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi established his very own caliphate back in 2014.

MOSUL, Iraq — The last handful of neighborhoods held by the Islamic State in Mosul will likely be the most difficult to retake despite nearly eight months of street-by-street fighting, the U.S. officer in charge of advising Iraqi forces in the area predicted.

It’s going to be “extremely violent,” Col. Patrick Work, commanding officer of the 2nd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, said during a phone interview Saturday. Work is in charge of about 1,800 soldiers who are helping “advise and assist” the Iraqi forces around Mosul.

“The hardest days are still in front of them,” he said.

Mosul is a critical prize in the fight against the Islamic State. It was once the main urban stronghold for the militants in Iraq and the logistics base for atrocities across northern Iraq, including purges against the Yazidi minority and the destruction of renowned pre-Islamic antiquities.

Work declined to give a timeline for the remainder of the operation in the western part of the city, but some Iraqi officers have said the battle could be over by the end of the week in conjunction with the start of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer.

Yet with some of the most difficult areas of the city still held by militants — and tens of thousands of civilians still trapped in their homes — the fighting could last well into the weeks ahead.

“It all depends on the circumstances of the battle. Now they are entirely besieged, and there is no way out. It’s going to be either fighting or giving up and trying to infiltrate with the civilians,” said Lt. Gen. Sami al-Aridhi, commander of two of the U.S.-trained Counter Terrorism Service task forces. “I can’t give timelines, but I don’t expect it’s going to be long.”

Iraqi forces are now wrapping up the final stages of an operation, launched earlier this month, in which they retook nearly all of the northwestern part of Mosul. An earlier offensive that started in February stalled after coming up against heavy resistance in the southern part of the city.

 

The Iraqi military is usually mum about its casualty numbers, but Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Friday that the Iraqis had suffered heavy losses during the Mosul operation, with about 980 killed and more than 6,000 wounded.

The Islamic State holds only about five square miles of Mosul, including the Zanjili neighborhood and the Old City. The Old City is the site of the Great Mosque, where the Islamic State’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared a “caliphate” in 2014 across parts of Iraq and Syria.

Both Zanjili and the Old City are far more cramped that the rest of Mosul, with narrow side streets and alleys that will restrict Iraqi vehicle movement and give Islamic State fighters a clear advantage when it comes to launching their signature bomb-laden suicide vehicles.

The close quarters will probably force Iraqi troops to rely more heavily on their own resources rather than U.S.-led airstrikes and artillery. Aside from airstrikes, U.S. and other coalition forces are providing a range of other assistance to Iraqi forces, including flying small hand-launched drones to help spot targets for advancing forces, as well as providing counterartillery radar and drone-jamming equipment to stop the Islamic State’s own unmanned aircraft.

It is unclear how many fighters are left in the city or what type of resources they still have at their disposal. Work declined to give an estimate, while Iraqi Counter Terrorism officers have said they believe about 350 fighters remain in the Old City and its surrounding neighborhoods.

“Measuring exact numbers of ISIS fighters left in Mosul is difficult, and it may not really matter,” Work said, adding that Iraqi gains in the city are more important to the coalition than tracking militant numbers.

Islamic State tested poisonous chemicals on prisoners in a bid to produce easily-obtainable chemical weapons for local use and potential terrorist attacks in the West, records recovered from Mosul by Iraqi soldiers and obtained by The Times show.

Arabic-language notes detailing experiments with thallium sulfate and “a nicotine-based compound” were reportedly discovered hidden inside the University of Mosul by an Iraqi special forces unit during the current operation to recapture the city, which has been under the control of the radical Islamist group since 2014.

The UK newspaper reports that British and US forces verified the papers as those belonging to Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIS/ISIL).

In one experiment, a man weighing 100kg was gradually poisoned with thallium sulfate, which was dissolved in his food and water. Over a period of 10 days the victim suffered nausea, fever and finally swelling of his internal organs, before an agonizing death.

A colorless and tasteless substance, less than a teaspoonful of which

 

 

is required to kill, thallium sulfate is a well-known toxin, featured in an Agatha Christie murder mystery.

But what the Islamic State scientists described as an “ideal lethal poison” also occurs frequently in nature, and is commercially available as a pesticide in countries such as the US.

The other compound in the notes, found in nicotine, could be extracted from cigarettes and vaping liquids, but was equally deadly to its test subjects.

 

In one experiment, according to the documents, IS scientists smeared the compound onto the skin, causing the victim to lose consciousness. In another, they injected it, and within two hours, the subject was dead.

“This is a horrifying throwback to the Nazis who would test nerve agents on live humans. During the Second World War, the Nazis conducted thousands of deadly experiments with mustard gas on prisoners at Sachsenhausen concentration camp, near Berlin,” Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a UK chemical weapons expert, told the Times.

The notes do not outline eventual uses for the toxic chemicals, but the experiments were apparently part of a much larger weapons development program started by Islamic State when it took control of the city, designed for developing local chemical weapons – which have been deployed against civilians and the Iraqi army – and potential discoveries that were passed on in handbooks to Western IS recruits.

The heart of the research is believed to have been located at Mosul University.

In an operation that has lasted since October 2016, Iraqi forces backed by international air forces say they have retaken the majority of the city, though many strongholds, including Mosul University, which has been severely damaged, were fortified, and booby-trapped, requiring weeks of vicious streetfights.

A colorless and tasteless substance, less than a teaspoonful of which

 

 

is required to kill, thallium sulfate is a well-known toxin, featured in an Agatha Christie murder mystery.

But what the Islamic State scientists described as an “ideal lethal poison” also occurs frequently in nature, and is commercially available as a pesticide in countries such as the US.

The other compound in the notes, found in nicotine, could be extracted from cigarettes and vaping liquids, but was equally deadly to its test subjects.

 

In one experiment, according to the documents, IS scientists smeared the compound onto the skin, causing the victim to lose consciousness. In another, they injected it, and within two hours, the subject was dead.

“This is a horrifying throwback to the Nazis who would test nerve agents on live humans. During the Second World War, the Nazis conducted thousands of deadly experiments with mustard gas on prisoners at Sachsenhausen concentration camp, near Berlin,” Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a UK chemical weapons expert, told the Times.

The notes do not outline eventual uses for the toxic chemicals, but the experiments were apparently part of a much larger weapons development program started by Islamic State when it took control of the city, designed for developing local chemical weapons – which have been deployed against civilians and the Iraqi army – and potential discoveries that were passed on in handbooks to Western IS recruits.

The heart of the research is believed to have been located at Mosul University.

In an operation that has lasted since October 2016, Iraqi forces backed by international air forces say they have retaken the majority of the city, though many strongholds, including Mosul University, which has been severely damaged, were fortified, and booby-trapped, requiring weeks of vicious streetfights.
