Synopsis
5 minutes ago, boosterbglee said: I imagine sometime soon (this week), there will be a major breakthrough and this will suddenly be over! I agree, BoosterBGlee! Seems like about 2,500 of the estimated 1,000 remaining ISIS have been eliminated and there are (were) about 450 ISIS left (imagine that, a couple weeks ago there were only 200 - 300 ISIS militants left in the ISIS held areas of Mosul- wuz up with that!). After all the non Old Mosul areas are retaken from ISIS, I suspect the "wheeled bomb" use will be limited. Hey, if IDF, etc. can't get their vehicles through the narrow streets in Old Mosul, the wheeled bombs will likely have an even tougher time maneuvering with all the improvised armor, weight, and limited visibility for driving. Hey, maybe the IDF (with the help of some adventurous and creative "US Advisers" could rig up some four wheelers kinda like the Awesome SWAT Response Vehicle in the recent Jason Bourne movie and then run those things down the narrow streets and alley ways to clear out all those puny little ISIS motorcycle wheel bombs. That'll fix 'em! Go Moola Nova!

ChuckFinley
It will tough going here at the end. The rats will have no where to run to and will have to fight and die in place. They really need to mass troops and make a full advancement from all side at once. That way all axis of advances are covered and they can not reenforce a specific area. This will limit any strong points along the axis of advancement. Let's wrap this up.

tigergorzow
Iraqi Forces Intensify Efforts to Recapture IS-held Old City in Mosul Mira Rojkan 22/05/2017 - 22:42 Iraq LEEDS — The Iraqi forces shelled several Islamic State (IS) positions in Mosul's Old City on Monday as part of the preparation for a ground operation aimed at decisively ousting the extremist group from the remaining IS-held areas in west Mosul, an Iraqi army officer said. Army Captain Jabbar Hussein told Anadolu Agency that the Iraqi Federal police forces are currently pounding the IS positions with missiles and artillery fire in western Mosul. He explained that the shelling comes in advance of a “planned ground offensive," which aims to dislodge the IS militants from western Mosul and recapture the Old City of Mosul, which according to analysts, is the heart of the city. The Iraqi forces backed by the US-led coalition launched a massive offensive against the IS militants in west Mosul back in February this year, as part of the wider operation for liberating the city of Mosul. The operation was launched in October 2016, and to this point the forces liberated the entire eastern part and up to 90% of western Mosul. http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/iraq/352291
tigergorzow
Seven IS Militants Killed in Coalition Strike in Western Mosul Mira Rojkan 22/05/2017 - 22:50 Iraq LEEDS — Seven Islamic State (IS) militants were killed when an US-led coalition drone targeted and hit their location in western Mosul on Monday. Lieutenant Yazan Abdul-Kafi of the Iraqi Air Forces told Rudaw that the coalition drone hit a house in the district of Zanjili, which was occupied by the IS militants. All seven militants inside the house were killed as a result of the strike, which also destroyed a vehicle parked near the house. The area of Zanjili is one of the few districts that remain under IS-control and the Iraqi forces are currently sweeping through on their way to the Old City, which is the last key point held by the IS militants. The Iraqi forces are currently working on installing a floating bridge linking western Mosul with the eastern side of the city. The bridge could facilitate the Iraqi army troops movement and the transfer of displaced people who are fleeing western Mosul, according to Lieutenant Abdul-Salam al-Jubouri. According to recent reports by the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, the Iraqi government controls almost 90% of western Mosul after launching an offensive against the IS militants in February. The offensive is part of a wider operation for retaking the city of Mosul from the IS extremist group. http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/iraq/352292

tigergorzow
Hashd Presence Does Not Bode Well for Future of Nineveh: Leader He blamed the Shi'ite forces for impeding the IDPs' return Basnews English 22/05/2017 - 18:25 Iraq ERBIL— The Shi'ite Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitaries should withdraw from Nineveh as they are a threat against the security of the area after the complete liberation of Mosul, said the general secretary for the Christian Bet-Nahrain Democratic Party In a statement to Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP)'s official page on Monday, Romeo Hakkari also accused the Shi'ite forces and Iraqi army of destroying more than 100 houses of the Christian dwellers in Bartalla and Qara Qush districts of Nineveh Plain. He called on the Shi'ite forces to leave Nineveh so that Nineveh Plain troops, affiliated with Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces, take over the security of their own area. Initially there was an agreement that the Hashd will not participate in liberation of Mosul, Hakkari said, "but what happened is that the Hashd also interfered and now there are many of their headquarters in the towns and districts of Nineveh Plain which Christians left behind." He described Hashd as a "threat" against the security of Nineveh residents, saying "Many innocent civilians became the victim to the experience of these forces and their previous reckless behavior in Anbar and Salahaddin provinces." "They do not bode well," Hakkari said in reference to Hashd forces. The Christian party leader also blamed the Shi'ite paramilitaries for causing panic due to which the IDPs do not dare to return to their homes in Nineveh Plain. Hakkari also anticipated that further stay of these forces in Nineveh province will lead to the same situation of Anbar and Salahaddin provinces, where many civilians are kidnapped or assassinated. http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/iraq/352239

tigergorzow
HRW: Hashd Al-Shaabi Detaining and Torturing Men Fleeing Fighting The militia group detained men in schools and tortured them Basnews English 22/05/2017 - 16:14 Iraq ERBIL – Iraqi paramilitary forces, known as Hashd al-Shaabi or Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), have arbitrarily detained at least 100 men since late April 2017, and in some cases, the detainees have been tortured during the interrogations, Human Rights Watch said in a report released on Monday. A number of men who were detained by Hashd al-Shaabi while fleeing al-Hadar village, 90 km southwest of west Mosul, were interviewed by the Human Rights Watch. The men said the militia forces detained them as they fled their homes because of the fighting, and held them for up to 15 days in a school building, and in one case, in a house. The militia members interrogated them about possible Islamic State (IS) links, and in two cases beat them with thick metal cables. Other detainees had told them they were also beaten during the interrogations. “Given the previous track records of PMF abuses in the area of screening and detaining local men, Baghdad should treat these findings with the gravest concern,” said Lama Fakih, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “Authorities should do all in their power to ensure that the families fleeing the fighting around Mosul are able to get to safety, not tortured in secret facilities,” he said. Moreover, Human Rights Watch heard similar accounts from other men fleeing the fighting earlier in 2017 and raised the issue with the government, but the detentions and abuse seem to have continued. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi should issue a decree banning screening and detention by the PMF and hold those who have committed abuses accountable. http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/iraq/352215
