In Mosul, Iraq, the battle between Iraqi Military and the Islamic State has been ongoing since October 2016. In the process, most of Mosul’s formal medical facilities have been destroyed. This has left Iraqi medical teams to set up makeshift field hospitals hidden within abandoned homes all over the city.

Breaking: Iraqi forces liberate strategic airbase in west Mosul

By Leith Fadel 18/05/2017

BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:00 P.M.) – The pro-government Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd Al-Sha’abi) continued their Al-Qaiwaran offensive, Thursday, targeting the strategic Sahel Sinjar Airbase that was under the control of the Islamic State (ISIL) forces.

Within hours of launching their assault, the Popular Mobilization Forces asserted full control over the Sahel Sinjar Airbase, forcing the remaining Islamic State terrorists in the area to retreat northeast.

The capture of the Sahel Sinjar Airbase, today, puts the Iraqi forces in position to liberate the remaining territory in Al-Qairawan that is still under the control of the Islamic State terrorists.

-Qairawan is incredibly important to the Iraqi Armed Forces because of its proximity to the Islamic State stronghold of Tal ‘Afar,
which is located near both Mosul and the Syrian border-crossing into Al-Hasakah.

Defeat by Annihilation: Mobility and Attrition in the Islamic State´s Defense of Mosul

19 Apr 2017 By Michael Knights and Alexander Mello for Combating Terrorism Center (CTC)

6063255136_db6c0d3757_b.jpg

In this article, Michael Knights and Alexander Mello examine the so-called Islamic State’s ongoing defense of Mosul. Despite the group’s use of innovative tactics such as pairing car bombs with drones, it has been outfought by coalition-backed Iraqi forces, which liberated eastern Mosul in January. With Islamic State fighters now engaged in a final fight on the western side of the Tigris, our authors describe how the group continues to prioritize mobile defensive tactics to seize the initiative and mount counterattacks.

Abstract

The Islamic State’s defense of Mosul has provided unique insights into how the group has adapted its style of fighting to dense urban terrain. While the Islamic State failed to mount an effective defense in the rural outskirts and outer edges of Mosul, it did mount a confident defense of the denser inner-city terrain, including innovative pairing of car bombs and drones. The Islamic State continues to demonstrate a strong preference for mobile defensive tactics that allow the movement to seize the tactical initiative, mount counterattacks, and infiltrate the adversary’s rear areas. Yet, while the Islamic State has fought well in Mosul, it has also been out-fought. Islamic State tactics in the final uncleared northwestern quarter of Mosul are becoming more brutal, including far greater use of civilians as human shields.

An updated version of Mosul map showing the latest developments in the battle to recapture ISIS-held areas in right bank of Mosul, has been obtained by The Baghdad Post on Sunday.

On the map, the spots marked in green represent the previously ISIS-held areas that have been liberated.

As the map shows, the white spots represent the parts of the war-torn city where ISIS is still controlling.

In Mosul, there are areas still witnessing clashes between the Iraqi forces, backed by international coalition, and ISIS terrorists. They are marked in orange on the map.

In a statement, the Center said it renews its commitment to neutrality when covering stories of the battles and the other issues. Our aim is nothing but the truth, the statement concluded.

Publishing the maps relating to the progress of the Iraqi forces in Mosul is done after contacts with multiple military sources and local officials, it added.

Iraqi Forces launched a major offensive on 19th of February to retake the western part of Mosul after declaring total control of the eastern part of the city on 24th of January as part of the military operations to liberate the city that started on 17th of October 2016.

Iraqi Forces to Move on in Tel Afar After Full Liberation of Mosul: Commander

LEEDS — Tel Afar likely to be the next Iraqi army target after liberating the city of Mosul, Major General Najm al-Jubouri, a top commander of the military operations in Mosul said on Thursday.

Jubouri told reporters that the Iraqi army will join forces of the Shi'ite militia Hashd al-Shaabi to recapture what is left of the provinces under IS-control, starting from Tel Afar in the west of Mosul.

He explained that currently the operations are ongoing to liberate Qairawan, Ba'aj and Adnaniya, all near Tal Afar.

However, the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had said on Tuesday that the operation for Hawija will be launched straight after the liberation of Mosul. He further said that operation for recapturing Mosul is expected to come to an end in the next coming days, after which the Iraqi forces will move on to liberate Hawija.

The Adviser for the Nineveh province council, Abdul-Sattar Habbu said on Thursday that currently 750 IS militants remain in Mosul, but the security forces are besieging those mostly foreign criminals as most of the leaders have already fled, leaving those elements to death or captivity.

Over 200,000 More Civilians Expected to Escape Mosul: UN

Over 200,000 More Civilians Expected to Escape Mosul: UN

LODZ — With the military confrontations intensifying on a steady pace between the Iraqi army and Islamic State (IS) militants in Mosul, over 200,000 more civilians could be displaced as the result of the clashes, a senior United Nations humanitarian official in Iraq warned on Thursday.

“The numbers of people fleeing their homes in western Mosul are overwhelming,” said Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq Lise Grande in a press release from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. “We are talking about very large numbers of families who are leaving everything behind. They are fleeing under very difficult circumstances.”

She revealed that the government of Iraq alongside humanitarian partners are working to help those escaping IS-held areas and bring them to safety. However, she noted that the numbers of people who are moving are now so large, it’s becoming more and more difficult to ensure civilians receive the assistance and protection they need.

As military operations intensify and move closer to Mosul’s old city area, we expect that up to 200,000 more people will flee,” she continued.

The military battle in Mosul isn’t over yet and even when it is, the emergency will continue for months. We have no choice—we have to re-double our efforts to mobilize more resources and get assistance to the people who need it the most. Hundreds of thousands of lives are at stake.”

Iran has always been a threat to Iraq. Nobody knows that better then the Iraqi's. Remember when they were having fits about Iran's armies on Iraqi soil offering to help the Iraqis get rid of ISIS. They didn't stand for that st all. Which makes it even more bizarre how Maliki had his nose right up Irans arse. That in itself pretty well demonstrates Maliki wasn't Iraqi at all, but more like Iranian... an Iranian terrorist to e more direct!

I am at odds at how all these nut cases keep crawling out from under rocks thinking that the world is going to allow Iraq to be taken with everything it  has invested in the country.......
