The Great Mosque of al-Nuri.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Federal Police Command has declared killing dozens of Islamic State militants, as the troops advanced by 300 meters toward the Grand Nuri mosque in Mosul’s Old City.

“Our troops in the Old City launched limited attacks and approached by 300 meters toward Nuri mosque from Qadhib al-Ban side,” Lt.Gen. Shaker Jawdat, chief of Federal Police, said in statements on Thursday.

The Grand Nuri al-Kabir Mosque is the place at which Islamic State’s supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi gave his famous sermon in 2014 declaring the establishment of the group’s rule in Iraq and neighboring Syria.

The forces, according to Jawdat, “killed dozens of terrorists including the leader abu Faisal al-Jabouri and destroyed eight booby-trapped motorbikes and three other vehicles in al-Farouq region.”

“Five passageways were combed in Bab al-Jedid to be used for evacuation of civilians,” he added.

In February, Iraqi government forces, backed by the international coalition led by the U.S. and the paramilitary forces, launched an offensive to retake western Mosul. The eastern side of the city was recaptured in January after three months of battles that started in October.

Earlier this month, Iraqi troops announced that Islamic State members were only in control over less than seven percent of territory in Iraq.

The U.S.-led coalition later estimated the total number of the remaining militants at less than 1000 fighters in the city.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) The Iraqi army said Thursday that only four districts of western Mosul were left to recapture from the Islamic State as government forces continue to clear the group’s last remaining entrenchments in the region.

Sabah al-Nuaman, a spokesperson of the army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service, said the forces had managed to take over “Daesh’s (Islamic State) core” by retaking al-Tenek district, where 500 militants were killed in security assaults.

He added that only four neighborhoods are between security forces and overall recapture of the western region of Mosul.

Mosul (google maps)

Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led international military coalition and paramilitary troops, recaptured eastern Mosul in January and launched another offensive in February to retake the west.

The coalition estimates the remaining IS fighters in Mosul by less than 1000, and Iraqi officials say the group currently controls less than seven percent of Iraqi territory.

The most remarkable military activity is currently focused around the ancient Old City region, the area from where IS supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the establishment of the group in a famous sermon.

Government troops, backed by Popular Mobilization Units, also launched an offensive on Tuesday to retake al-Hadar region, west of the city, and recaptured several villages and an ancient area there since then.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi forces.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Pro-Iraqi government troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi have declared liberating the cemetery in al-Hadar region as well as Tureitaa village in the north of the region, in western Mosul.

“The forces freed the cemetery in Hadar,” the media service of the paramilitary troops said on Thursday.

“The troops also liberated Tureitaa village in the northeast of Hadar,” the service added.

Earlier on Thursday, the troops advanced toward the center of Hadar to storm it.

The troops announced on Wednesday recapturing three villages of Im Kreiz, Ghanem al-Awwad and Harraj in al-Hadar.

The offensives, which entered its third day, resulted in retaking 17 villages and strategic areas as well as the archaeological area.

In the Old City, Federal Police announced the troops approach by 300 meters toward the Grand Nuri al-Kabir mosque, killing dozens of Islamic State militants.

Earlier this month, Iraqi troops claimed the recapture of 70 percent of the western region and that IS members were only in control over less than seven percent of territory in Iraq.

Eastern Mosul was retaken in January after three months of battles between Iraqi forces, backed by U.S.-led coalition and the paramilitary troops. A major offensive was launched in February to recapture the western side.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State leader was killed on Thursday at al-Shefaa district while destroying an IS headquarters in western Mosul, the military intelligence service has declared.

“The international coalition fighter jets have killed IS leader called Abu Luqman al-Aafri in al-Shefaa district, located near al-Najjar district in western Mosul,” the service said in statements. “The jets also bombarded a headquarter for the group in the same area.”

Earlier on Thursday, Iraqi army said that only four districts were remaining to recapture the western flank of the city from the Islamic State.

In the Old City, Federal Police previously announced the troops approach by 300 meters toward the Grand Nuri al-Kabir mosque, killing dozens of Islamic State militants.

The militant group has lost dozens of its leaders since the start of western Mosul operations.

Eastern Mosul was retaken in January after three months of battles between Iraqi forces, backed by U.S.-led coalition and the paramilitary troops. A major offensive was launched in February to recapture the western side.

Iraqi troops were said to be in control over 4000 kilometers of the city, according to the U.S. State Department last week.

Coalition officials had estimated the number of remaining IS militants in Mosul by less than 1000.

Iraqi paramilitaries shut more Islamic State escape routes to Syria border

(Reuters) Iraqi paramilitary units captured the northern province of Hatra on Thursday, cutting off several desert tracks used by Islamic State to move between Iraq and Syria, the military.

The operations in Hatra are carried out by Popular Mobilisation, a coalition of mostly Iranian-trained militias of Shi’ite volunteers formed in 2014 after Islamic State, a hardline Sunni group, overran a third of Iraq.

The militias on Wednesday dislodged Islamic State from the ancient ruins of Hatra, which suffered great destruction under the militants’ three-year rule, a military spokesman said.

Hatra, a city that flourished in the first century AD, lies 125 km (80 miles) south of Mosul, where the militants have been fighting off a U.S.-backed offensive since October.

The militants are now surrounded in the northwestern part of Mosul, including the Old City and its landmark Grand al-Nuri Mosque from where their leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared in mid-2014 a caliphate also spanning parts of Syria.

Mosul is by far the largest city that had fallen to the militants in both countries. The density of the population is slowing the advance of Iraqi forces.

Hatra is also located west of Hawija, a region north of Baghdad still under Islamic State control.

Popular Mobilisation, which operates with the approval of Iraq’s Shi’ite-led government, said on Tuesday the Hatra campaign aims at cutting off Islamic State’s routes between Hawija, Mosul and eastern Syria.

Iraq’s border region with Syria is a historic hotbed of the Sunni insurgency against the rule of the Shi’ite majority community, empowered after the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

This has been posted by Thugs on another thread but I believe the source is different, anyhow looks like next Saturday is the day.

Sources: Iraq's Abadi to Declare Mosul 'Completely Liberated' Next Saturday

TEHRAN (FNA)- Sources close to the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Thursday that the city of Mosul will be declared 'fully liberated' from the clutches of ISIL terror group next Saturday.

The Iraqi flag will be raised, and the last bullet will be fired there by Abadi himself, they added, the Baghdad Post reported.

Few parts in the city are now under the control of ISIL. And they are about to be liberated, the sources further noted.

Nineveh provincial council member Hossam al-Abar said that the Old City of Mosul and the Grand Mosque of Nuri were the starting point of the self-styled caliphate of the terrorists, and the security forces will annihilate the terrorists at the same areas.

Few neighborhoods are remaining in the hands of ISIL, including the districts of al-Maqbara, al-Senaat, and al-Tahrir which is adjacent to 17th of July neighborhood and Street 60 completely encircled by the army's 9th division, he added.

The official yet indicated that if the Old City of Mosul is fully liberated, the whole city will be declared free, for this area is vital for the progress of the ongoing military operation.

Also, security expert Ahmed al-Sherifi asserted that the situation is indicative of a near end of the ongoing offensive as the operation to liberate al-Hadar neighborhood is preclude to liberating Tal-Afar which paves the way for declaring the city free of the terrorists within few days.

The expert cited the visit of the parliament speaker Selim al-Jabouri on Wednesday to the right bank of the city, saying it asserts the political presence ahead of declaring victory.

Thanks tiger for the many updates, a super day up to you brother :tiphat:

All this death and destruction was caused by the corruption of the elite politicians who handed Mosul over to ISIS in 2014

Analysts mostly blame former PM Nuri al-Maliki for giving Mosul to ISIS "while attempting to satisfy his allies in Iran.

Is it just me?  Or is Nuri Maliki synonymous with corruption???  Is this not a connect the dots puzzle that a 4 year old could figure out?

He also noted the forces started to remove mines and dismantle explosive devices.

US Colonel: ISIS must surrender or DIE

While moves to drive ISIS out of its last city had slowed – the US and their allies will carry out the campaign "however long it takes," US Colonel John Dorrian, spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve – the US-led Coalition offensive against ISIS said.

He told reporters at the US Embassy in London any fighters left in Mosul would either have to surrender or be killed – but added many terrorists left in the city are "fighting to death".

The Iraqi Army alongside support from the US Army and Air Force have been taking back Mosul street-by-street since October, 2016.

However, Colonel Dorrian remained confident victory is assured in the city and estimated there less than 1000 jihadi fighters left the city.

Reluctant to place a timeline for victory, he told journalists Iraqi forces are fighting in a "360 degree, 3D battlefield" where "every door, every window and every tunnel" might hide a jihadi fighter.

He said: "I will tell you straight up, what the result is going to be – every single ISIS fighter left in Mosul is going to be killed or they are going to surrender."

"We are working with the Iraqi security forces to get it done as quickly as we possibly can – and with as much precision as we possibly can."

Here is what you need to know about fate of ISIS chief so far

April 28 2017 10:44 PM
ISIS chief
ISIS chief

Mostapha Hassan

Chief of ISIS terror group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been the focus of media outlets across the globe as the end of the terror group he leads is looming.

Reports emerged about his death in airstrikes by the US-led coalition. And others spoke about his arrest near the Syrian Iraqi borders.

It was also said that ISIS head is alive, but he is keeping low profile as his terror knots are facing a dreadful end.

Arrested?

On April 19, European Department for Security and Information (DESI) announced that they got intelligence information that Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, ISIS terror group's leader, had been arrested by the joint force of Syria and Russia.

However, Russian Foreign Ministry denied the reports.

Image1_4201728224055636965185.png

“We are not aware of the arrest of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, caliphate of the Islamic State, and have not received any information or clarification in this regard” Rudaw cited the ministry as declaring.

Sources were quoted by Fox News as saying that the terror ringleader avoided capture by Iraqi special forces “by minutes” after escaping through a trapdoor.

According to the documentary, made by Sofia Amara, troops from Iraq’s elite Falcon Brigade missed out on capturing the terror leader by just minutes during a raid on his safe house in Baghdad in 2013.

Killed?

On February 14th, Iraqi air force has targeted a meeting of commanders from the Islamic State (ISIS) group that its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi may have been attending.

The forces said the Iraq-born Baghdadi, who proclaimed a "caliphate" straddling Iraq and Syria in June 2014, was not one of those names.

In March, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that ISIS terror group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi will be killed as nearly all of his deputies are now dead and it is "only a matter of time" that he meets the same fate.

The truth

Al-Baghdadi is said to have abandoned his terror recruits and gone into hiding as Iraqi forces continued to make inroads into Mosul, the caliphate the declared in the city’s central mosque in 2014.

However, there are conflicting reports emerging about his hideout. Some say he is still entrenched inside Mosul. But others suggest he has fled the city to the desert.

Image1_4201728224127972191418.png

According to Al Arabiya, reports speculate that Baghdadi has been spotted in a large parade featuring civilian cars and no armed men. The parade left to the heart of the desert.

The report said Iraqi sources said that the leader of ISIS visited Mosul three times, but had to change locations every hour. The security personnel didn’t carry any cellphones or technological means for fear of tracking and shelling the convoy.

The report suggested three hiding places for the terror leader to be entrenched in.

He is said to be escaping in the desert of Nineveh from the west toward Syria and Raqqa. And the second place is the Anbar desert in the direction of al Qa’im to the Jordanian borders, and then to the Nukhayb desert also on the Jordanian borders.

Before this, uncertainty on the fate of the terror leader dominated the scene, with the US officials saying he is not spotted yet or the narrative he is in Mosul is still not confirmed.

"There was a sort of 'spidey sense' at that time [the week Donald Trump was sworn in as president last January] that they were close, but that has gone away," a senior counterterrorism official briefed on the hunt to find Baghdadi told ABC News.

"We don't think he's in Mosul anymore," another counterterrorism official involved in the campaign to fight ISIS told the news network. "He's on the move.
"

"We have tons of intelligence reporting on al-Bagdhadi but nothing credible," the counterterrorism official said. "If he is still in Mosul, he's under a pile of rubble. But we're not sure where he is."

The world is still awaiting a decisive action towards the terrorism of ISIS. And many experts see that the biggest gift for the ones affected by the acts of the terror group is that its ringleader be caught and brought before justice.
