Iraqi VP: Mosul Operation Distancing from Its Goal

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Vice-President Usama al-Nujaifi has warned about the military plans in anti-Islamic State (IS) operations in west of Mosul, saying the mission is going out of control and distancing from its main goal.

The Sunni leader told reporters on Wednesday that an unnecessary huge number of troops are being deployed to western Mosul and it needs to be stopped.

He insisted the army should briefly suspend the offensive in order to allow commanders reconsider their military plans for the increasing number of civilian casualties.

Recent media reports have stated that hundreds of civilians who are caught between the clashing sides were killed or injured by the airstrikes or IS-planted explosives.

Nujaifi also blamed the Iraqi Federal Police for the large-scale of destruction in the northern Iraqi city, calling for international investigations into the case. “The Iraqi government is not able to conduct an impartial investigation,” he added.

According to the Iraqi Vice-President, the same day, 29th of March, the Iraqi forces randomly shelled a neighborhood in western Mosul densely populated by civilians.
