Sadrists Organize Large-scale Protest in Central Baghdad

BAGHDAD — The leader of al-Sadr Movement Muqtada Sadr, an influential Shi'ite cleric, once again leads a large scale demonstration in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, against the corruption in the government's institutions.

According to local sources, hundreds of thousands of people in Baghdad have taken to the streets to gather in Tahrir Square in the center of Baghdad to take part in today's protest.

The police have reportedly closed the streets in Baghdad and are attempting to block the flow of protesters from heading towards Tahrir Square.

Addressing the protesters, Sadr said he has received death threats from some sides which he avoided naming. However he encouraged his supporters to continue their protests peacefully if he is assassinated.

He said he won't give up on reforms until he either succeeds or dies for the cause.

He also threatened that his faction will boycott the upcoming elections in September 2017 if the current electoral commission is not changed.

Sadr followers have been repeatedly organizing demonstrations demanding the Iraqi government to make reforms in the cabinet and also change the current Iraqi High Electoral Commission, saying it's biased.

Demonstration in Tahrir Square, Baghdad, Iraq

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Influential Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called upon the government on Friday to disband paramilitary forces fighting Islamic State militants on its side after the end of operations in Mosul.

Addressing supporters during a protest in Baghdad’s central Tahrir Square, Sadr called for disbanding al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units), an alliance of Shia paramilitary groups formed in 2014 to combat IS, which also won government recognition in November as a national armed forces under the prime minister’s command.

He said the law passed to recognize al-Hashd makes Iraq a country “under the rule of militias”.

In his speech, Sadr said he had received death threats from “many parties”, which he did not name, urging his supporters to keep their protests peaceful if he is assassinated. “I am not going to appease an occupier, a sectarian or a partisan,” he said.

Sadr also threatened that his followers would boycott the upcoming local elections, slated for September 2017 if the current formation of the electoral commission is maintained. The panel’s formation was the main trigger of earlier protests by Sadr’s supporters in February, which tuned violent leaving five dead.

Sadr’s parliamentary bloc has recently boycotted meetings by the country’s leading Shia political alliance, the National Iraqi Alliance, for allegedly ignoring a proposed political settlement and reform project submitted by al-Sadr.

Al-Sadr has been a central player in the political and militancy scene in Iraq, and had for sometime, following the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, been branded an enemy to the United States, being an ardent opponent to foreign military presence in the country.

His settlement proposal, besides providing for U.N.-sponsored elections and sureties for minority rights, conditioned withdrawal of foreign, especially American, troops from Iraq.

Muqtada al-Sadr threatens to boycott Iraq elections (Video in link)

Powerful Shia leader demands changes to electoral law at Baghdad demonstration attended by thousands of supporters.

Influential religious leader Muqtada al-Sadr has told thousands of supporters in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, that he will boycott upcoming elections unless the country's electoral law is changed.

Supporters of the Shia cleric have repeatedly rallied for changes to the law and the country's electoral committee, which is dominated by affiliates of powerful political parties.

Iraqis stage silent protests to reform voting laws

If "the law remains ... this means that we will order a boycott of the elections," Sadr said in remarks televised at Friday's demonstration in Baghdad's Tahrir Square.

Iraq is set to hold holding provincial elections later this year, and parliamentary elections in 2018.

Sadr, a vocal critic of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, did not specify the specific changes he wants to take place, but the current law has been criticised as being biased towards large political parties over smaller ones.

The United Nations has backed demands for electoral reform, urging parliament last month to "finalise the ongoing review" of the election law and the electoral commission.

OPINION: The reinvention of Muqtada al-Sadr

Sadr is the scion of a powerful clerical family who in earlier years raised a rebellion against US-led forces and commanded a feared militia.

He had lost some of his political influence in recent years but has brought himself back into relevance by calling for demonstrations to push for reforms.

Al Jazeera's Stefanie Dekker, reporting from Erbil in northern Iraq, said Friday's demonstration showed Sadr has the ability to mobilise thousands of people.

"What we're seeing really has to do with internal Iraqi politics. [Sadr's] been campaigning on an anti-corruption platform - how politicians and the electoral commission are corrupt. This is important because Iraq will have provincial elections later this year.

"He's been highlighting this for over a year now but since the Mosul offensive [against ISIL] ... it's slowed down and attention has shifted.

"So this is an apparent effort by him to re-launch his campaign and remind people of his message - and thousands are heeding his call."

Rallies demanding improved services and opposing widespread corruption broke out in the summer of 2015, drawing pledges from authorities that reforms would be made that ultimately led to little in the way of lasting change.

Last year, his supporters broke into Baghdad's fortified Green Zone area on several occasions, where the government is headquartered, while clashes at a Baghdad protest in February left seven people dead.

US Calls on Iraq's Abadi to Disband Hashd Al-Shaabi: MP

Hashd al-Shaabi will become dissolved, Arafat Karam says

US Calls on Iraq's Abadi to Disband Hashd Al-Shaabi: MP

ERBIL — When visiting Washington, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has been asked by the US administration to disband the Shi'ite militia Hashd al-Shaabi, said a Kurdish member of the Iraqi parliament on Saturday.

Arafat Karam, the Kurdish MP, told BasNews Hashd al-Shaabi will be dissolved and the US has called on Abadi to disestablish the militia.

Karam said the Iraqi Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of Sadr Movement, has also come to the realization that Hashd al-Shaabi's existence does not serve the national interests of Iraq, adding that the militia may form a political list to participate in the upcoming elections to serve a political agenda of a regional power.

Muqtada al-Sadr said on Friday during his speech among the protesters in Baghdad that he had received death threats from some sides which he avoided naming.

Karam said the threats are serious and they come from an Iraqi faction allied with a regional power who wishes to establish the Governance of the Jurist in Iraq.

Sadr also fears that Hashd al-Shaabi may be used by his opponent factions against him, Karam said. Therefore he has called for the dissolution of the militia force after the Islamic State (IS) is defeated.

The US, Saudi Arabia and the international coalition believe that the Shi'ite militia is affiliated with Iran, he said.

The Kurdish MP added that the high tensions between Sadr and Nouri al-Maliki, head of State of Law faction will be a barrier to the visit of the Kurdistan Region delegation to Baghdad for negotiations with the central government.

why does everyone want them disbanded?

Their music stinks 'cause they ain't got no rhythm or jive! Hey, hopefully it is a one way ticket to retirement - or something worse - and they ain't never comin' back no way no how!

Well, OK, a little dry wit for a Saturday morning - Top of the Mornin' to you, Snow! Hope your coffee is good, hot, and just the way you like it!

The Shi'ite militia Hashd al-Shaabi is likely a rouge militia under the auspices of Iran. Giving Iranian affiliated militias the boot from Iraq is a good thing to avert them committing Crimes Against Humanity and stirring up sectarian strife to destabilize the area. After ISIS, Iraq will need to provide something to fill the vacuum for effective law and order instead of allowing these militia thugs from instituting their own authority while pilfering and abusing the Iraqis. I suspect recent focus from Coalition leaders are keenly aware of the need to boot Iranian influences out of Iraq (to include all Iranian affiliated militias) and this could likely be a very hot topic very soon to speed up the timing of international investment to provide ascent to the Iraqi standard of living. Improving the Iraqi's standard of living will lessen the likelihood that they will use violence as a means to support their life style.
