Sadrists are just throwing themselves in the spotlight to try and win over the people's trust. They are tip of corruption and better liars than Iran's ayatolla. Either way imo they know from higher ups that Friday will be post rv and theye will cancel the protest and say "our gov has listened to our demands" and praise themselves to gain the people's support even more

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Iraq's influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has threatened to boycott the upcoming provincial elections, urging instead followers to join a "reform revolution."

Al-Sadr spoke to thousands at an anti-government protest on Friday in Baghdad, calling for continued peaceful rallies.

He says Iraqis who love their country and hate corruption, regardless of ideology, support the "reform revolution." The remarks reflect continued power struggles in Baghdad even Iraqi forces battle the Islamic State group in Mosul.

Al-Sadr first took up the mantle of reform over a year ago, when escalating protests occasionally turned violent, breaching Baghdad's highly fortified Green Zone, home to the government and many foreign embassies.

Iraq is to hold local elections later this year - the first elections since IS overran nearly a third of the country in 2014.

Sadrists pour to demonstrate in mid-Baghdad

7:59 AM  ADMIN

Baghdad/ Iraq TradeLink: The Sadrist leader Muqtada al-Sadr's followers began pouring into al-
demonstration.jpg
Tahreer Square, mid of Baghdad, today Friday, to demonstrate demanding reforms and combating corruption.

It is expected that the al-Sadr will make a speech, as reported by his office last Saturday, which was described to be "important".

Today's demonstration came of similar protests in the same square that lasted for six weeks, which resulted in clashes that killed four and wounding more than 300, when the demonstrators tried to storm into the well-fortified Baghdad's Green Zone that contained governmental buildings and foreign embassies.

For the last two years, the Sadrist's followers and activists, known as the Civilian Trend, continued demonstrating demanding "deep-rooted reforms for the political process, combating corruption and for better services".
demonstraton%2B2.jpg

In the latest demonstrations, the Sadrist leader called for changing the personnel of the Elections Commission and the Election Law.

Sadrist sources expected that al-Sadr will announce "dissolving" his military arm, Saraya al-Salam, to "avoid" future crisis on the future of the Popular Mobilization Forces.

This expected move is to support the current Iraqi government and an "expression of good will for post-Da'ish (ISIS) era.

A part of this force will remain to protect the religious shrines and for "emergency cases", the sources added.

Saraya al-Salam is one of the military groups that were stationed in Salahal-din province to protect the religious shrines there.

This force was formed in June, 2014, which comprised of 40.000 members, only 6000 are under the umbrella of the Popular Mobilization Forces.

Earlier, the Sadrist leader called to close all military organizations and turning them into cultural, civil, or humanitarian institutions.

Also, he called the merge these forces with military and security establishments.

On the security level, most of the bridges and squares in Baghdad were closed, particularly leading to al-Tahreer Square, which resulted in cutting one half of Baghdad form the other, amid warnings that some "intruders" might create a state of chaos within the demonstrators themselves.

Today's demonstrators will hold their Friday's prayers in both at al-Tahreer Square and the Sadrist Cit, east of Baghdad, as was reported earlier, because the square will not be capable to accommodate all the comers to the demonstration.

Al-Sadr calls for political reform, Iraqi army support

March 24 2017 12:20 PM
Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr

Sadrist Movement leader, Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr has reiterated calls for boycotting elections under the existing electoral commission, The Baghdad Post reported on Friday.

Addressing thousands of protesters at the Tahrir Square, downtown Baghdad, the reputed cleric urged Iraqis not to vote for corrupts.

Voting for the corrupts means the same old faces will remain in power, he warned, calling for keeping protests going until corruption is completely eliminated.

"Your votes must be given to efficient and experienced people, not for those who marginalize you," he said.

Al-Sadr's speech also tackled plans for political reform.

He urged his supporters and all Iraqis to stand by the Iraqi army to recapture all previously  ISIS-held territories.

"We must back the Iraqi army to complete victories, we will continue the jihad until we are asked to stop," he said, stressing his supporters were always ready to boost the Iraqi army.

Thousands of Sadrist Movement followers have flocked to the Tahrir Square despite intensified security measures that nearly paralyzed the capital city.

Police have closed all entrances to the square and a number of vital bridges in an attempt to reduce the numbers of the protesters.

Al-Sadr's Jihadist Aide, Kazem al-Essawy, had called citizens from all Iraqi governorates to join the protests that "remind the government of the necessity of reform and combating corruption".

Essawy, leader of Saraya al-Salam Militia, added in a conference held at al-Sadr's residence in Hannanah, "Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr will give a speech on Friday at Tahrir Square coinciding the tough conditions our bleeding country is experiencing."

"Our protests will continue till the comprehensive reform will be accomplished," he said, reiterating calls for Iraqis to be further unified and prepared for the post-ISIS era.
