After a 25-year-old rift, Iraq and Saudi Arabia have taken initial steps to put an end to estrangement, The Baghdad Post reported on Monday.

Both sides have agreed on the establishment of a joint coordination council, reopening of land border crossings, resuming air traffic, launching security and intelligence cooperation as well as Saudi contribution to the reconstruction of the Iraqi newly-liberated areas from ISIS.

This came during Iraqi-Saudi talks currently held in Riyadh as Iraqi Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Nizar Khairallah is visiting the kingdom.

In a press statement, spokesman for the Iraqi foreign ministry, said the talks between his country's delegation and the Saudi officials were "characterized by seriousness  and deep scrutiny of issues of mutual concern that focused on turning over a new leaf in the bilateral relations on the principle of mutual confidence."

The Saudis have suggested the formation of a joint coordination council as well as tackling a series of issues that included the reopening of border crossings and facilitating the passage of Iraqi pilgrims into Saudi Arabia and the Saudi visitors to the Shiite sanctuaries in Iraq.

The talks also dealt with issues related to fuel, oil refining and energy as well as launching new Saudi investments in Iraq, the spokesman  added, indicating both sides have discussed their stances towards a number of regional issues.

These talks come as a resumption of  previous talks launched by Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, in Baghdad in late February. During his visit, al-Jubeir informed Iraqi PM Haidar al-Abadi his country's desire to appoint a new ambassador to Baghdad.

The Iraqi-Saudi relations have seen escalating tensions since the Gulf War in 1990. But in 2014, late King Abdullah tried to revive relations between Iraq and Saudi Arabia by setting up an embassy there. He also attempted to increase Iraqi-Saudi relations by supporting the coalition in the fight against ISIS that invaded large swathes of Iraq.

In 2015, Riyadh appointed Thamer al-Subhan as its first ambassador to Baghdad in quarter a century. However, the Iraqi authorities asked Saudi Arabia to change al-Subhan over accusations of interfering in its internal affairs.

A shipment of medical aid that weighs 10 tons was dispatched from Saudi Arabia to Iraq on Monday to prevent an outbreak of the cholera disease in the war-torn country, the Makkah newspaper reported.

The aid shipment, which has been provided by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, had been scheduled to reach Iraq seven months ago but the Iraqi government was late in carrying out required procedures.

Necessary procedures on the Iraqi health ministry’s part included specifying the number of beneficiaries and the areas where the aid would be distributed as well as the entity that would be in charge of receiving the shipment from the Saudi team accompanying it.

As a result from the delay on the Iraqi side, Saudi Arabia had to ask the companies that provided the medical items and drugs to replace them with items that had a later expiry date in accordance with the period during which such drugs would be consumed, Makkah added.

The Saudi side stressed that it is important for the Iraqi government to identify the entity which would be in charge of receiving the Saudi shipment at the airport so as to avoid any possible complications.

Saudi relief aid to Iraq

A plane loaded with relief aid has arrived from Saudi Arabia to Baghdad International Airport.

The plane carried ten tons of vaccines, relief aid and medical supplies to the Iraqi people, a press source said on Wednesday.

In early March, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir paid a surprise visit to Iraq. Al-Jubeir’s visit to Baghdad was the first by a Saudi foreign minister since 1990.

Al-Jubeir stated Riyadh’s willingness to help bridge the sectarian divide and end any differences  between the two countries.

Relations between Iraq and Saudi Arabia are gradually improving after tense relations that followed remarks by Saudi Ambassador to Baghdad Thamer al-Thabhan on intervention of Iran militias in the Iraqi internal affairs. Iraq has later asked Saudi Arabia to replace its ambassador in Baghdad after he said that Iranian-backed Shiite paramilitary units were aggravating tensions with Sunni Muslims in Iraq.

Revealed the Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir, expressed his country's intention to cancel the previous debt owed by Iraq.

He said that Saudi Arabia is seeking to open a flight route between Riyadh and Baghdad and Najaf in the framework of strengthening bilateral relations.

He Alajabir- during a meeting in Washington with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari after a meeting of the anti-Daash- international coalition countries expressed satisfaction with the visit of the Iraqi diplomatic delegation to Riyadh, headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Nizar Khairallah, and described the visit as "good" and came to activate bilateral cooperation.

In the same context, it said the Information Office of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, on Thursday, it was during a meeting with al-Jaafari and al-Jubeir discussed developments in bilateral relations over the past period and ways to deepen and open new horizons for joint cooperation in all fields.

The two sides agreed on the need for exchange of visits between officials of both countries, especially as minister of commerce and industry in the coming period; to increase the volume of trade and the size of investments.

The Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir's determination to write off the debt owed by Iraq to the Kingdom, and the opening of an air route between the two countries.

Jubair said, during a meeting with Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, according to a statement posted on the Iraqi ministry's website, "The visit of the Iraqi delegation to Riyadh, headed by the Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, it was good to activate the volume of cooperation between the two countries."

Jubeir revealed during a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart on the sidelines of the meeting of the international coalition against "Daesh" in Washington, for "Saudi Arabia's intention to cancel the previous debt owed by Iraq," but the Saudi minister did not mention the size of the debt.

The kingdom plans, according to Jubeir, open a flight route from Riyadh to Baghdad and Najaf, in the framework of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

For his part, al-Jaafari said his country is "still need financial support and humanitarian aid and the reconstruction of the infrastructure of the Iraqi cities after its liberation from the grip of terrorists completely Daesh."
