Diyala (IraqiNews.com) An officer informed on Monday, that Iraqi army forces, backed by Army Aviation, launched an extensive offensive to chase the Islamic State militants in Diyala Province.

Captain Habib al-Shamri, said in a press statement, “Forces from the army’s 5th infantry brigade, backed by Army Aviation helicopters, launched a wide-scale military operation in Houd al-Zor area, near Mukdadiyah District, north of Diyala, to hound the members of the Islamic State group.”

“The operation was launched in uninhabited mountain areas, which consider safe havens for the Islamic State militants,” Shamri added.

The areas northeast of Diyala witnessed a surge of violence and increased attacks by the Islamic State militants on security forces and volunteer fighters, in the last few weeks.

The IS fighters launch their attacks from rugged mountain area such as Hamrin Mountains, areas east of Salahuddin and south of Kirkuk Province, while the military operations launched by Iraqi forces did not prevent the group’s attacks.

The Islamic State group captured large areas of Diyala in 2014, while Iraqi army, backed by US-led international coalition, conducted extensive military operation and managed to retake all the captured areas before the end of 2015.

US report: IS destroyed fake artifacts in Mosul and sold original pieces

by 6f179dd84f6766787386163fcfc86f98?s=80&d= Loaa Adel Mar 13, 2017, 5:11 pm

An IS militant uses a sledgehammer to destroy a several thousand years old stone in the city of Nimrud.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A report published by the US network ‘CNN’ revealed that the Islamic State group destroyed fake Iraqi artifacts in Mosul, to be able to sell the original pieces later.

The US network quoted Iraqi officials as saying that experts examined the videos released by the Islamic State, showing the destruction of artifacts, and concluded that some statues and artifacts destroyed by the militants are fake copies made from gypsum.

The report also declared that the terrorist group smuggled the original pieces out of Iraq, in order to be sold abroad.

The Islamic State militants did not destroy the small-sized artifacts, the report added. It is also possible that the militants sold the rare precious artifacts that were stored in the museums warehouses.

The terrorist group published videos showing its members while destroying several artifacts. It released a video in March 2015, showing IS militants while destroying a Lamassu (an Assyrian winged bull) statue with a sledgehammer in the city of Nimrud.

Another video posted online by the group in April 2015 showed the archeological site in Nimrud being destroyed by bulldozers and explosives.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Destruction caused by Islamic State militants and battles with security forces have inflicted 40 percent of the infrastructure in the western side of Mosul, a municipal official in Nineveh has said.

Almaalomah website quoted Nineveh province council member Hassan Sabaawi saying the scope of destruction occurred as Islamic State militants blew up civilian and government property. He added that the density of residential areas, especially at Wadi Hajar and Tayaran districts, added to the crisis.

Last January, Majed Shinkali, a parliament member from Nineveh, said the war in Mosul had destroyed 80% of the city’s infrastructure. In January, the Iraqi government approved 27 U.N.-sponsored projects for the reconstruction of Mosul’s liberated areas, but has yet to set timetables for their implementation.

Iraqi government forces recaptured eastern Mosul from Islamic State on January 24th after three months of battles, and recently said they became in control of 30 percent of western Mosul since another offensive launched in February.

The conflict in Mosul has forced nearly 100.000 civilians to flee homes in the western side, putting the total of refugees displaced in the whole city well beyond 250.000.

IS fighters have reportedly booby-trapped civilians residences and opened escape routes penetrating homes while preparing for the battles.

ISIS's 'industry minister' arrested in Mosul

ISIS minister arrested
ISIS minister arrested

A top ISIS leader who worked as the terror group's minister of industry has been arrested in Mosul's right bank, Military Intelligence Directorate said Monday.

The terror group's leader along with a number of his aides were arrested in this lightning operation by the military intelligence personnel, he added.

The terrorist also was the director of Badush cement lab in Mosul's right bank, the source further noted.

ISIS is continuing to lose ground in Iraq and Syria amid mounting pressure by the Iraqi and US-led forces to completely liberate the once-ISIS strongholds in Iraq and Syria.

These attacks came to fruition. The Iraqi forces retook the left bank of Mosul later last January.

They are continuing to push ISIS out of the rest of the city, which is the last major stronghold under the control of the terror group.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced on February 19 the start of an operation to liberate the western side of the flashpoint city of Mosul from the grip of ISIS terrorist group.

Most of the attacks' civilian casualties are women and children whose homes have been completely destroyed in the hellish bombardment.

Toll from the attacks may rise as many people sustained critical injuries.

Local residents scrambled to arena, digging out bodies of the victims from under the rubble.

They denounced the barbaric attacks on civilians carried out amid silence of the international community.

ISIS leaders killed in Mosul as Iraqi forces liberate key neighbourhoods (Video in link)

Iraqi Security Forces have maintained rapid progress in the fight to liberate western Mosul from ISIS control. Since the start of operations in the the city’s west, Iraqi forces have captured a number of districts, most recently New Mosul and al-Aghawat, and are steadily approaching the city centre.

Iraqi forces also announced recently the control of Shuhada, Sumoud and Resale neighbourhoods, in addition to killing a number of ISIS militants and foiling five car bombs. Forces towards the outskirts of the city are attempting to encircle ISIS in western Mosul, with the aim of besieging the group and forcing its surrender.

Iraqi Federal Police and Rapid Response Forces have also made advancements from the south of Mosul, recently capturing the Danadan and Dawasa neighborhoods, where the government complex is located.

ISIS counter attacks have been scarce as reports indicate that the terrorist group is focusing on defending territory under its control, rather than attempting to retake lost land from the Iraqi forces.

During battles in the east of Mosul, ISIS commonly launched fierce counter attacks on Iraqi forces and civilians after withdrawing from its territory. However, this has not been a significant tactic that the group has deployed in the western part of the city.

Iraqis Capture IS Women's Prison, Free Detainees

Displaced Iraqis flee their homes on a rainy day as Iraqi forces battle with Islamic State militants, in western Mosul, March 13, 2017.

Displaced Iraqis flee their homes on a rainy day as Iraqi forces battle with Islamic State militants, in western Mosul, March 13, 2017.

WASHINGTON —

Advancing Iraqi forces in western Mosul have captured a textile factory that Islamic State (IS) used to as a jail to hold women, officials inside the city told VOA.

“The Islamic State imprisoned nearly 300 women in the building,” Gayath Surchi, the speaker of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party in Mosul told VOA.

The textile factory is located between al-Mansour and Wadi al-Hajar neighborhoods in western Mosul and came under the Iraqi control Sunday night, according to Surchi.

Mines slow rescue

Another Kurdish official in Mosul, Said Mamozini, told VOA that the factory was besieged by Iraqi forces last week but IS mines planted around the building prevented them from further advancing.

“There are heavy clashes with IS fighters in nearby neighborhoods until now,” Mamozini told VOA.

The officials said the identity of the rescued women remained unclear pending an investigation. But officials believe many of the women belong to the Yazidi religious minority sect. IS kidnapped many Yazidi women in 2014 and enslaved them.

Women will be taken to refugee camps

Surchi said the women will be transferred to refugee camps in northern Mosul where they will be identified and reunited with their families.

“The women are under the Iraqi forces’ protection but haven't been evacuated yet because of IS snipers and bombing,” he said

“Their ages vary between 20-year-old to 70-years-old and some of them speak Kurdish,” Surchi said. “This makes me expect those women to be our Yazidi mothers and daughters.”

IS attacked Sinjar, the ancestral capital for more than 200,000 Yazidis in August 2014, killing roughly 5,000 of its male residents and enslaving thousands of women and children. The women were reportedly used as sex slaves, while the children are taught IS ideology.

According to the Iraqi Kurdistan's Directorate of Yazidi Affairs, roughly 2,500 Yazidi women and children are still under IS control in Syria and Iraq.

Corruption Helped ISIS Take Mosul. Victory Cannot Last While It Persists

Without reducing the corruption that plagues the country's government, terrorism will be impossible to defeat.

The war against ISIS in Iraq will require more than military victory. Without reducing the corruption that plagues the country’s government, terrorism will be impossible to defeat.

“Don’t you see the allies of the tyrants? Don’t you see those who spread corruption on the Earth? Don’t you see the fighter jets above them protecting them? Are you fighting so that these people can rule the blessed land”? Or so says Dabiq magazine, the glossy propaganda magazine of the so-called Islamic State.

Since the age of Robin Hood, highlighting corruption has been a highly successful recruiting tactic for those seeking to upend the establishment. As the Dabiq excerpt illustrates, ISIS uses corruption to propel imagery of a Manichean world order: on the one hand, corrupt and illegitimate governments; on the other, a utopian Islamic state, free from vice, embodying moral virtue, religious legitimacy, and purity. The construct may be simplistic, but it is also effective. It taps into legitimate grievances and deep public anger at rampant nepotism, bribery, and theft of public funds across Iraq and Syria. They offer not simply a reward in heaven, but a world in which governance and justice systems work. One of their tweets boasts about the “extreme oversight” by their Office of Services that has led to cleaner streets.

“Fight corruption” is a familiar rallying cry in many fragile states. In Libya, former fighters interviewed for a recent report by Transparency International said it was a common theme at ISIS training camps. In daily briefings, ISIS commanders would demonize the corrupt systems of governance that oppressed Muslim societies, from Gaddafi to the Egyptian Armed Forces.  In Libya, where an ineffective transitional government hasn’t been able to provide security to the public nor dismantle patronage networks, the narrative is difficult to counter. For many disillusioned with the lack of progress after Qaddafi, ISIS messages about the need for justice or eradicating corruption ring true.

But while “fight corruption” has been an effective call to arms, ISIS’ own corruption is part of the group’s plan to expand its control. In several countries, the group exploited weak and fragile institutions, using corruption to facilitate their operations at an alarming speed. In Libya and in Iraq, extremist groups have relied on smuggling, criminality (including human trafficking), and corrupt officials, even as they seek to portray themselves as an alternative to the abusive systems in power. Interviewees in Libya, for example, said they were paid with smuggled drugs, while bribery at the Egyptian-Libyan border has enabled illicit arms flows.

At the same time, corruption has eviscerated the very institutions that should be stopping the progress of such groups, stripping them of legitimacy and fighting capacity as well. In the months leading up to the fall of Mosul, many Iraqi senior officers, appointed due to their factional and sectarian loyalty rather than professional record, were more focused on amassing personal fortunes, embezzling public resources, and extorting money from those under their command, than on maintaining an effective fighting force and assessing intelligence accurately.

Along with factionalism, this widespread corruption resulted in a fractured and ineffective chain of command, false impressions of the force’s actual strength, exceedingly low morale, and dismal relations with the civilian population. By the time the forces of ISIS marched on Mosul, Iraq’s army was riddled with ghost soldiers - troops who exist only on paper, allowing commanders to pocket their pay. One of the 2,500-troop brigades turned out to only have 500 men, many of them underfed and with salaries skimmed off by their commanders.

Corruption is undermining efforts by the Iraqi government and the international community to respond to the threat posed by radical groups. Yet the problems is rarely recognized as the root cause of extremism, and the perception that international powers are complicit with corrupt regimes has been one of the factors putting the West in the crosshairs of ISIS.

Instead of treating corrupt autocrats as necessary partners in a military fight, Western governments should recognize the inherent dangers they can pose for U.S. operations. Practically speaking, this might mean supporting better oversight institutions, instead of just focusing on the provision of equipment and training to defense and security forces, or putting conditions on military aid to encourage states towards basic defense governance reforms, such as budget transparency and audits.

Defeating violent extremism does not rest solely on the ability of the Iraqi army to retake Mosul neighborhoods, but whether governments throughout the region can regain the trust of their peoples and repair their fragile institutions

Islamic State nears humiliating defeat in Mosul amid new Iraqi Army advances (Video in link)

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (1:30 A.M.) – Following the capture of the ‘New Mosul’ neighborhood on Monday, the Iraqi Armed Forces proceeded to seize the nearby Naft district while fierce urban clashes continued on the perimeter of the Old City district in western Mosul.

Amid the aforementioned advances in the provincial capital of Nineveh, the Iraqi Federal Police and the Rapid Response Units were also able to impose full control over the Al-Sabunji mosque and Baghdad Hotel.

Effectively, Iraqi troops are just 200 meters from the Old Bridge, linking Mosul’s eastern and western neighborhoods together across the Tigris River. If captured, this bridge will be the third of five main bridge in the city completely liberated.

An unprecidented number of joint US and Iraqi airstrikes also targeted Islamic State rearguard positions in the northern part of the Old City, causing massive devastation.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Army’s 16th Division and Al-Abbas Brigade of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) captured the Al-Jafel village and the Sheikh Mohammed residential complex following the capture of two other villages northwest of Mosul yesterday.

Effectively, around 80% of the Badush region has been liberated.

Across the border in Syria, an Iraqi jet landed at Damascus International Airport to bring home the corpses of over 40 Iraqi pilgrams killed by a twin suicide bombing conducted by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham two days ago.

At the moment, between 80% and 85% of Mosul city is restored under government control.

Iraqi Forces Launch Operation to Hound Down IS Militants in Diyala

LEEDS — Iraqi army forces backed by the Army Aviation of Iraq launched an offensive aiming to chase Islamic State (IS) militants in the province of Diyala, an officer from the Iraqi forces said.

Captain Habib al-Shamri said in a statement on Monday that Iraqi troops from the army’s 5th Infantry Brigade, conducted a "wide-scale" operation in the area of Houd al-Zor, aiming to hound down members of the Islamic State terrorist group in the area. The forces were backed by the Iraqi Army Aviation helicopters as part of the offensive near the district of  Mukdadiyah, located north of the Diyala Province.

Shamri further explained that the operation was launched in an uninhabited mountain areas, which is considered a safe zone for the IS extremists, IraqiNews reported. The area is located northeast of the province of Diyala, and is under constant threat of violence and attacks on civilians by the IS. In the past weeks several attacks on security forces have been reported by the Iraqi authorities.

According to the Iraqi Army official the IS militants tend to launch their attacks from mountain areas such as the Hamrin Mountains, east of the province of Salahaddin. The IS took control over the area of Diyala back in 2014, when the group came to Iraq capturing large parts of the country in hope of establishing a self-proclaiming caliphate.
