ISIS propaganda chief killed in strike on Iraq-Syria border

ISIS propaganda chief killed in strike on Iraq-Syria border

An airstrike killed a leader of propaganda operations for ISIS terrorist group, CBS reported on Friday.

Ibrahim al Ansari incited vehicle, knife and arson attacks against American and Turkish citizens, Col. Joseph Scrocca, the US spokesman in Baghdad for the American-led coalition fighting ISIS, said Thursday.

Al Ansari was killed with four others in a strike Saturday in al Qaim, Iraq, on the border with Syria, Scrocca said.

Scrocca also said the coalition is adjusting its procedures amid growing concern that the US military may be responsible for the deaths of many dozens of civilians in a March 17 strike in the tough urban combat in Mosul.

Earlier this week, a surveillance aircraft watched ISIS smuggling civilians into a building, Scrocca said. He said that was different from using civilians as human shields and that ISIS did not want the coalition to know the civilians were in the building so that a strike would kill them.

American officers have inspected a collapsed building in Mosul, where upwards of 100 civilians, including women and children, were buried alive in the March 17 strike

Rush hour on Mosul's 'displacement highway' -AFP

March 31 2017 10:01 PM
.
.

AFP

On west Mosul's Baghdad street, thousands of displaced Iraqis flee the fighting with their meagre belongings but similar numbers walk in the other direction, heading straight back into the war-torn city, AFP news agency reported.

The street is currently the main corridor for civilians fleeing the battle between ISIS group and the government forces trying to root them out of their last strongholds.

It is also the main entry point for those already returning to the homes they fled in the early stages of the offensive federal forces launched last month on the western side of Mosul.

The contrary flows of trudging civilians cross quietly, each on their half of the road, sometimes parted by a screeching ambulance taking wounded residents or fighters to the nearest hospital.

"They are fleeing areas that have not been liberated yet like Yarmuk, Matahen and Aabar neighbourhoods," said Ghanem Ahmad, a 48-year-old in a grey traditional gown.

"But we the people of Risala feel safe now and are returning to our homes, it's better," he said.

Ghaith Lafi, a 21-year-old student wearing a red hoodie, decided to park his cart stacked with chocolate bars and wafers on Baghdad street a few weeks ago.

"This street is full, as if it was judgement day," he said.

"There are other places like this where displaced people cross but now Baghdad street... is the safest street and the one people use the most to flee," he said.

"I just stand here on 'displacement road' -- some people come to me with nothing so I give them things for free."

Mosul is witnessing one of the biggest battles since IS extremist proclaimed a so-called caliphate over parts of Iraq and Syria nearly three years ago but it was never emptied of its population like other cities were when government forces moved back in.

- Short-term displacement -

Residents were largely unwilling to leave. Those who eventually had to because the fighting got too intense are trying to return as soon their neighbourhood is retaken, even when the battle still rages a few blocks down.

The corridor is secured by forces from the elite Counter-Terrorism Service and other units but mortar rounds still whizzed over the streams of displaced civilians while gunships unleashed thudding bursts of machinegun fire on nearby extremist targets.

"Why would we be scared? Thank God, we Iraqis have no fear, never as long as he is present," said Shetat Mohammed, a veiled woman in her late 50s, pointing to the sky as she and her family walked towards the plumes of black smoke rising above Mosul.

There were an estimated one million people in Iraq's second city before security forces began a huge offensive in mid-October.

More than 300,000 were displaced at one point but not all went to camps set up by the United Nations and other aid groups.

Many have simply moved from one neighbourhood to another as the front line itself moved, attempting to remain as close as possible to their abandoned homes.

Faisal Hamid, carrying nothing but two framed training certificates, was among the droves of civilians fleeing the city but hoped to walking homeward on Baghdad street within days.

"I'll be back, God willing, in two or three days. The security forces told us to come back when the area is secured," he said.

Aziz Ali, a 47-year-old with a grey beard, is making the Baghdad street journey for the third time in 10 days already.

He and his children tried to return last week to the Mosul al-Jadida neighbourhood they had fled a few days earlier but found very few other families there and no water to drink.

He decided to leave again and temporarily move to the east bank of Mosul, which is split in two halves by the Tigris river.

"My uncle's house is there... hopefully the children can go to school."

Aftermath of an airstrike by U.S.-led coalition jets in Mosul.

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) U.S-led coalition airstrikes have killed three senior Islamic State leaders in western Mosul, while two suicide bombers were killed before carrying out an attack.

A statement by the Defense Ministry said late Thursday that coalition strikes pounded IS locations in al-Islah district in western Mosul, killing three senior leaders of the militant group.

Hamma al-Alil district, Mosul (google maps)

According to the statement, those killed included one nicknamed Abu Gamal al-Baljiki, a military area commander, ahmed Suhaib al-Takriti, the group’s “economy official” and Mohamed Elwan al-Takriti, who was in charge of IS camps in western Mosul.

A separate statement by the Interior Ministry also said security forces killed two suicide attackers from IS putting on explosive vests at Hammam al-Alil, an area in southern Mosul recaptured late 2016 by security forces, which also hosts refugee camps.

Iraqi government forces recaptured eastern Mosul in January, and have been struggling since mid February to retake the western side of the city that fell to IS in 2014.

Iraqi and coalition generals have reiterated that IS combat powers were waning and many senior leaders had been killed or fled the city since operations launched to liberate the western region.

PMUs down Islamic State-guided drone in Salahuddin

Members of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) holding a drone guided by Islamic State militants, which they shot down in Shirqat, Salahuddin province.

Shirqat (IraqiNews.com) Pro-Iraqi government paramilitary forces downed a drone guided by Islamic State militants in Salahuddin province on Friday.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said through its media service they brought down a drone guided by the militant group in Ein al-Baida village, south of the town of Shirqat.

IS militants still pose a security threat in Salahuddin though security forces had recaptured large areas of the province since the group emerged in 2014 to proclaim an “Islamic Caliphate”.

Islamic State members have increasingly relied on weaponized drones in bombing civilians and security troops in Mosul, where IS has been losing ground and personnel since a security campaign launched in October to retake the city.

PMUs have been actively fighting IS in Iraq alongside the Iraqi government troops since 2014. They won official recognition as a national force that responds to the Prime Minister last November.

Six IS leaders killed in airstrikes southwest of Kirkuk

Dead bodies of Islamic State militants (representational photo)

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Airstrikes killed six Islamic State leaders southwest of Kirkuk on Friday, according to Kurdish military sources.

The six members were killed when an airstrike targeted their gathering on an IS-held road between al-Riyadh and al-Khaled regions west of Kirkuk, military sources within Peshmerga troops were quoted saying.

Iraqi government forces have been backed by fighter jets from the U.S.-led international military coalition in its campaign running since 2014 to clear Iraqi cities from Islamic State militants.

IS has been holding a few strongholds in southwestern Kirkuk since it emerged in 2014 to proclaim an “Islamic Caliphate”. IS has been losing personnel and ground since a campaign launched in October to retake areas held by the group, most notably the city of Mosul, its largest bastion in Iraq.

The Iraqi government, once finished with its campaign in Mosul, is expected to launch further offensives at other areas held by IS, including Kirkuk.

IS has executed hundreds of civilians in Kirkuk’s town of Hawija over accusations ranging from fleeing its strongholds and collaborating with security forces.

WHY AREN’T MOSUL RESIDENTS RETURNING TO LIBERATED AREAS?
Iraq, April 1, 2017

The Ministry of Displacement and Migration announced March 20 that the number of residents displaced from Mosul has risen to 355,000 since the start of the liberation in October 2016, with the number set to increase. Meanwhile, only 81,000 displaced residents have returned to liberated areas.

People are increasingly flocking to the Directorate of the National Security Service in the Bartala area in eastern Mosul to obtain security permits to travel or flee to other Iraqi provinces. Such permits prove to a certain point that their holders are not members of the Islamic State (IS) and do not work with it.

“Between 1,000 and 1,500 permits were being issued on a daily basis in January 2017 to citizens of the [eastern Mosul] areas, including large numbers of employees,” a security source from the Mosul Security Directorate told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity.

During the years of IS control, most of the Mosul population opted to stay in their homes to show resistance against IS. Some residents even described those who left the city as “weak.” However, they now seek to escape as soon as the chance arises.

Ferial al-Mosuli, the director of a secondary school for girls, opted to stay in Mosul to prevent IS from seizing her house. “Many more people left Mosul after the liberation than during IS’ occupation because of the lack of clean water and electricity.”

Mosuli added, “We do not have enough teachers; most of them are still in [Kurdistan], and only 65 students are left in our school out of 700.”

Some of the Mosul residents who lived in areas that are now liberated have chosen not to return to these areas, especially those working in the health and education fields, as they settled with their families in Kurdistan, Baghdad or outside Iraq.

Intensive clashes have been going on between Iraqi Rapid Response Forces and ISIS terrorists  to recapture "Grand Nouri" Mosque in Mosul's right bank.

The Iraqi troops are about to retake the mosque according to adopted plans.

The landmark mosque was the place where ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi appeared for the first time in 2014 to declare his so-called caliphate, after the terrorist group took control of Mosul city.

The operation is part of a massive offensive launched by the Iraqi army on February 19 to take control of the western side of the embattled city of Mosul which has been under the control of ISIS since June 2014.

ISIS car bomb factory discovered in Mosul

April 01 2017 09:24 PM
ISIS car bomb factory

An ISIS car bomb factory with vehicles and explosives to cause mass destruction has been discovered in the Iraqi city of Mosul, Daily Mail reported on Saturday.

Image2_42017121187968506825.png

Iraqi soldiers found two cars and an armoured plated garbage truck destined to be used in suicide missions .

The truck had been spray-painted with bright red paint while the bodywork had been rendered in white - a new ISIS tactic to confuse US surveillance drones into thinking suicide car bombs are ordinary civilian vehicles.

Image1_420171211851519557330.png

During the offensive in east Mosul, most ISIS car bombs were either painted black or their steel bullet-proof metal sheets were left unpainted .

Image1_420171211926514135868.png

The truck's bodywork had been reinforced with thick steel sheets, designed to act as bullet-proofing to protect the driver traveling at high speed towards enemy positions.

Image1_42017121203195641905.png

Government troops made the terrifying discovery in the Josah district as they advanced into the western half of the city, where hundreds of thousands are still trapped under the terror group's control.

Image1_420171212026112481865.png

'These two car bombs were under construction and were almost ready to be loaded with explosives to be used against us, but Daesh didn't have time to deploy them before we liberated the area,' Heider, a soldier with Iraq's elite Rapid Response Division (ERD), told MailOnline .

Image1_420171212058260121302.png

'If it had been used, the rubbish truck would have created a massive explosion, easily destroying three houses,' he added.

Image1_420171212119502787106.png

Soldiers say this new strategy of painting lethal vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIEDs) is designed to confuse aerial surveillance operations being carried out near the front-lines by US spy drones to delay the military response against car bombs.

Image1_42017121226186377901.png

'The US military are here with us on the front lines but not fighting, they are using drones to monitor Daesh activities, especially suicide car bombs,' said Iraqi soldier Mohammed.

Image1_420171212229636230665.png

'They have a big technologically-advanced drone which they constantly fly over areas we are advancing into, to check for incoming Daesh suicide car bombs .'

Image1_420171212330168845319.png

He explained that, when a car bomb is identified, co-ordinates are given to Iraqi and coalition warplanes, which then target them with airstrikes.

In the bomb factory warehouse, officers from Iraq's Federal Police busily stripped the rubbish truck of its red and white metal panels.

Image1_42017121242812103770.png

One worker said they planned to use the parts on their own military vehicles, which are under constant threat from ISIS IEDs, suicide bombs and RPGs.

Image1_420171212430651536651.png

Engineers also found two chlorine canisters that ISIS reportedly use as a makeshift chemical weapon in their defence of Mosul, formerly their Iraq stronghold .

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (1:40 P.M.) – Around 200 Islamic State militants were annihilated by Iraqi air raids over the Al-Ba’aj region in western Iraq in recent days, the Iraqi Joint Operations Room claimed on Saturday.

The statement said airstrikes were conducted in response to a large batch of ISIS reinforcements arriving in western Nineveh from across the border. The jihadist militants were spotted mobilizing for an assault ultimately looking to lift the siege of Tal Afar.

Iraqi ground troops stationed west of Tal Afar killed scores of ISIS insurgents upon encountering the newly arrived jihadist fighting force.
