IMIS terrorists fire rockets at Mosul's right bank

IMIS targets Mosul
IMIS targets Mosul

IMIS militiamen have fired rockets, with homemade launchers, at several parts of Mosul's right bank, eyewitnesses told the Baghdad Post Thursday.

These rockets fall on densely-populated areas in Mosul, with no precise hit at its targets, they added.

There are unidentified gunmen with all-black uniform patrolling the streets of Mosul's left bank, they further noted.

IMIS, Iran Militia in Iraq and Syria, is a terror sectarian-driven militia whose agenda echoes the plots of Iran's Mullah regime.

It is considered one of Iran's stooges in Iraq. Its elements commit unspeakable crimes against Iraqis, especially the Sunnis.

IMIS militiamen were caught on several occasions while killing and torturing locals, and even looting their households.

Fears of more deaths as epidemics sweep Mosul, warns IOHR

Malnutrition in Mosul

The Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights (IOHR) said on Thursday epidemics sweep both the right and left banks of Mosul for drought, malnutrition and water pollution, The Baghdad Post reported.

The OIHR, a non-governmental body that monitors and documents all violations of human rights in Iraq, added in a statement it saw hundreds of decayed bodies that worsen the situation.

"Hundreds of bodies of ISIS militants have piled up in Mosul's streets, causing an outbreak of infectious diseases," the statement read, warning against the lack of medications for such diseases on the short term.

The statement confirmed 276 cases in the liberated left bank, mostly women and children, sustained typhoid infections for a severe lack of sterilized drinkable water.

Some of the cases have passed away.

Medical officials in Nineveh governorate have told the observatory the number of diseases resulting from drought and pollution is on the increase.

The statement has pleaded the Iraqi Ministry of Health to rapidly dispatch needed medications for Mosul's displacement camps to thwart any new deaths.

It also called for the concerned governmental bodies to sterilize drinking water.

Thousands of Mosul residents, particularly in the right bank, were forced out of their homes amid ferocious fights between the Iraqi army and ISIS terrorists.

Press reports said earlier this week that the displacement camps provided by the government lacked the much-needed food and medical supplies.

Abadi Wants Fewer US Soldiers in Iraq after IS Defeated

Abadi Wants Fewer US Soldiers in Iraq after IS Defeated

ISTANBUL — Iraqi Prime Minister Haider a-Abadi wants a reduction in the number of US military personnel in Iraq following the defeat of the Islamic State (IS) militants in Mosul.

"As we are crushing Daesh, it is clear that there is a need to reduce the number of our allies who are helping us,” al-Abadi told Middle East Eye (MEE), using another acronym for the IS.

He also noted that Nouri al-Maliki, former Prime Minister of Iraq, in 2014 had also requested a withdrawal of US forces following the liberation of Mosul.

"What this government has done has been to internationalize the fight against terrorism. We have expanded it, made it more robust," al-Abadi said.

"We have taken on board many countries that wanted to help Iraq as well. The number of forces increased and reached a peak in the battle of Nineveh, especially in the west of Nineveh at the moment. After this operation the number is going to be reduced,” al-Abadi emphasized.

Although al-Abadi wants a reduction in US forces in Iraq, he is in favor of US training the Iraqi forces, including the local police force.

"We have to strengthen our armed forces and security forces and this will need a lot of help from our allies to give proper training," he told MEE.

"We have started the training of the local police in Anbar and Nineveh, Salah ad-Din and Baghdad, and we will expand it to all Iraqi provinces, to re-train all the police in Iraq, in addition to the army and the counter-terrorism forces. This mutual relationship has been very successful. We have to finish off Daesh and the rest of the terrorists by our cooperation. We need intelligence cooperation in this field; we need logistic support,” al-Abadi stressed.

Currently there are about 5,200 US troops on a “permanent” mission in Iraq. This number excludes those on a temporary mission. Only troops on a “permanent” mission count against the cap placed under the Obama administration, which limits the number of US troops in the country at 5,200.

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (1:05 A.M.) – On Thursday, the Iraqi Armed Forces captured one of the largest underground ammunition storage bases abandoned by ISIS in the desert between Tal Afar and Mosul.

According to a source close to Al-Masdar News, the site was unearthed after bribing local informants on the whereabouts of such facilities in northern Iraq.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army officer, Colonel Thamer Jaber, announced on Thursday, that security forces repulsed an attack launched by the Islamic State group, while killed 10 of the group’s militants near al-Kazak camp, northwest of Mosul.

Jabber said in a press statement, “Security forces that protect Badush city managed to repulse an attack launched by the Islamic State on the city, while also killed 10 militants, including suicide bombers, northwest of Mosul.”

“The Islamic State militants, including suicide bombers, also tried to sneak into the city of Badush, to retake it from security forces,” Jabber added.

Jabber also pointed out that some of the militants fled toward Tal Afar District, and explained that army forces reinforced their presence in the city, to prevent any further attacks.

Iraqi forces besiege Islamic State around Mosul Old City

(Reuters) Iraqi government forces besieged Islamic State militants around Mosul’s Old City on Thursday, edging closer to the historic mosque from where the group’s leader declared a caliphate nearly three years ago.

The militants, holed up in houses and darting through alleyways, resisted with sniper fire, suicide attacks and car bombs.

Though heavy rain hampered the advance, Federal Police and rapid response unit troops reached points about 500 m (yards) from the centuries-old al-Nuri Mosque by Thursday morning.

The black jihadist flag was clearly visible draped from its famous leaning minaret.

The government forces have made significant gains in recent days in a battle that started in October, seizing a main bridge over the Tigris river and closing in on the mosque.

“We are holding positions we took yesterday. There is a lot of resistance in that area with snipers and car bombs,” Federal Police Major General Haider Dhirgham told Reuters.

The capture of al-Nuri Mosque would be a huge symbolic victory as well as a concrete gain.

“It’s important for them, it’s where they declared their state,” Dhirgham said, speaking at a police forward base as refugees trudged through the muddy streets and wrecked houses.

Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi chose the mosque as his backdrop for announcing the caliphate spanning Iraq and Syria in July 2014.

Since then, Mosul has been the hardline group’s main urban stronghold in Iraq but it has steadily lost ground since the offensive began. Iraqi leaders say the battle is reaching its final stages.

Several more areas of western Mosul had been recaptured, including the hospital, during Wednesday and Thursday morning but officers said progress was slowed by car bombs and booby-traps in houses and alleyways, as well as the bad weather.

Islamic State hit back with sporadic attacks on government positions, including mortar fire. Suicide bombers had driven explosive-rigged cars at troops, Dhirgham said.

Government forces responded with mortars and helicopter gunships strafed militant positions from above.

Police said they had killed nine militants who tried to counter-attack one of their positions with rocket-propelled grenades.

“Federal Police drones bomb dozens of fixed and mobile Daesh targets in the perimeters of the Grand Mosque,” a later police statement said, using an Arab acronym for Islamic State.

DIFFICULT TERRAIN

A Federal Police officer said commanders were meeting to adjust their plans for tackling the Old City.

“The new offensive plans should adapt with the difficult terrain of the complicated, narrow alleys,” he said. “The tight roads prevent us from using armored vehicles and that will definitely leave our soldiers vulnerable to enemy fire.”

The need to ensure the safety of civilians, many of them hungry and traumatized by living under Islamic State’s harsh rule, was also a priority.

“The enemy … has started to set fire to houses, which means that are on the retreat. They have destroyed homes and have destroyed families,” Dhirgham said.

Mosul has served as Islamic State’s de facto capital as they imposed the rule over the areas they had seized. The city’s recapture by the government would drive the remnants of the Islamic State army into the hinterlands.

The group is also under pressure in neighboring Syria, where three separate forces are advancing on Raqqa, the main Syrian city under Islamic State control.

As well as waging jihad in Iraq and Syria, the militants have inspired attacks in cities in Europe, Africa and elsewhere that have killed hundreds of civilians.

U.S. and other Western countries are providing air, artillery and other support to the Mosul offensive, reflecting the international concern over the Islamic State threat.

However, the presence of tens of thousands of civilians in IS-held areas means that simply pulverizing them is a risky proposition.

Thousands of residents have escaped to government lines in recent days but it has been impossible to tally the number of civilian casualties.

On Thursday, at a camp crammed to capacity south of Mosul, displaced families from the Old City waited for buses to take them on to other areas.

Many had come from near a central bus garage on the western side of old Mosul and had fled that morning.

“There’s destruction, houses destroyed, people have been pulled from under the rubble,” said Hisham Sobhi, 41, waiting with his family in the rain and mud.

Some were heading to eastern Mosul to stay with relatives. Taxi drivers shouted ‘Mosul, Mosul!” — meaning the eastern side.

Major General Dhirgham said the total retaking of the city was not yet imminent.

“I will not tell you one or two weeks, because that’s not true, but within one or two months it will be completely liberated,” he said.

Paramilitary forces kill 2 Islamic State members in western Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Pro-Iraqi government paramilitary groups said Thursday they killed two Islamic State members in a foiled attack in western Mosul.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said through its media they killed two Islamic State attackers in western Mosul’s region of Tal Zalat, and destroyed their vehicle.

PMUs, an alliance of Shia militias which won recognition as a national armed force in November, have been actively taking part in operations against Islamic State extremists in western Mosul and other Iraqi provinces. They had made remarkable accomplishments over the past months, retaking Tal Afar airport and most recently taking part in the liberation of Badush region.

Al-Hashd has also claimed to have isolated Tal Afar, an outstanding IS bastion, from both Mosul and the group’s strongholds in Syria.

Iraqi commanders said recently they became in control over 60 percent of western Mosul since operations to recapture that area launched in February. The government said late January its forces fully retook the eastern side of the city. Forces are currently working to expel IS militants from central Mosul.

Military commanders had predicted to retake western Mosul within six months of operations.

Battles in the eastern side of the city have so far displaced more than 100.000 civilians.

Video: Sky News team has narrow escape in Mosul

This is the moment a Sky News crew narrowly avoids a suicide bomb blast as they run from sniper fire on the front line of the Iraqi offensive against Islamic State in Mosul.

Sky News Chief Correspondent Stuart Ramsay is at the front of the offensive along with cameraman Nathan Hale, Iraq producer Haider Kata and security adviser Mike Mawhinney.

On Wednesday, they were forced to shelter inside a vehicle as a huge explosion rocked the nearby area and then run across open ground covered by IS snipers when their position came under heavy fire.

The vehicle two of the Sky crew sheltered inside is circled moments before the explosion Image Caption: Moments before the explosion: The vehicle two of the Sky crew sheltered inside is circled

It is thought that a nearby digger saved them from the brunt of the blast.

Ramsay said: "Sometimes you have to run into a front line, even though your brain is screaming 'don't go'.

:: 'I felt my arms and legs - they were all there'

"Dismounted from armoured Humvees in this sniper-filled battle space, there is no choice.

"We're basically hiding in rubble now, trying to find a way to get out of here. At the moment it's impossible to move, there's just too much action taking place."
