KABUL, Afghanistan –  Gunmen wearing white lab coats stormed a military hospital in Afghanistan's capital on Wednesday, killing at least 30 people and wounding dozens more in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

The attack on the 400-bed military hospital, which is located near two civilian hospitals in Kabul's heavily-guarded diplomatic quarter, set off clashes with security forces that lasted several hours.

Gen. Dawlat Waziri, a Defense Ministry spokesman, says there were "more than 30 killed and more than 50 wounded" in the attack. He said Afghan forces had battled the attackers floor by floor. The ministry said the attackers were dressed like health workers.

Waziri said a suicide bomber had detonated his payload and another attacker was shot dead, and that one member of the security forces was killed and three wounded.

Afghan helicopters circled over the area, which was surrounded by security forces.

Abdul Qadir, a hospital worker who witnessed the attack, said an attacker in a white coat shot at him and his colleagues. Ghulam Azrat, another survivor, said he escaped through a fourth floor window after attackers killed two of his friends.

IS claimed the attack in a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency.

An affiliate of the extremist group has carried out a number of attacks in Afghanistan in recent years, and has clashed with the more powerful and well-established Taliban, who carried out a complex attack in Kabul last week.

Afghan security forces have struggled to combat both groups since the U.S. and NATO formally concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014, switching to an advisory and counterterrorism role.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack during an address in honor of International Women's Day, calling it "an attack on all Afghan people and all Afghan women."

More than 30 people have been killed after attackers dressed as doctors stormed the largest military hospital in Kabul, the BBC quoted Afghan officials as saying on Wednesday.

Militants armed with guns and grenades gained entry after one detonated explosives at a hospital gate and then opened fire on staff and patients.

Commandos who landed on the Sardar Daud hospital roof killed all four attackers after several hours of fighting.

ISIS terroist group has claimed the attack.

The Taliban has denied any involvement.

More than 50 people were also wounded, the defence ministry said.

President Ashraf Ghani said the attack at the 400-bed hospital "trampled all human values".

"In all religions, a hospital is regarded as an immune site and attacking it is attacking the whole of Afghanistan," he said.

The attack began at 09:00 local time (04:30 GMT). One hospital staff member who was able to get out saw an attacker "wearing a white coat holding a Kalashnikov and opening fire on everyone, including the guards, patients and doctors".

Theseus - I was thinking it's a "shell game." Can't finish up in Mosul, so will move the pea over to Afghanistan - they NEVER quit!

The reason it is a shell game is because the dunderheads in charge refuse to fight the war that really matters. They are like cockroaches. You kill 1500 of them and more just pops back out of the woodwork. Its been like this for over a thousand years. The war we need to fight is not to kill them although that does have its own satisfaction, the war is of ideologies. When people wake up and realize we need to fight an ideological war rather than a war with guns and knives, then and only then will groups like this not pop up after one goes down. How often have you heard of Al-Qeada since this group took center stage? Very few comments on them and usually only relating to Daesh as an offshoot of Al-Qaeda. Do you know the group before Al-Qaeda? Taliban? Before the Taliban? Before that and that and that and that...the list goes on.

And this is why we need to exterminate every last person who holds their belief

If we exterminated every last person who holds their beliefs, the books still exist. The beliefs would then get spread around again and the groups would start small and then branch out. The patient 0 in this pandemic is none other than the Quran Surrahs and Hadiths.

Realize something, their so-called prophet was a Hanifa or poet. He had 82 or so followers before being thrown out of Mecca. Imagine if he was never thrown out and he and his followers and his religion he tried to start would have died when he did. Hanifa was the only peaceful part of him until he got thrown out of Mecca. Once he returned from Medina with thieves and dregs of society his plan was to kill his relatives, aunts and uncles who laughed at him before setting his sights on the Arabian Peninsula. He conquered that by the sword and through his generals. He defeated the Romans as well.
