The Iraqi military says it has retaken a bridge across the River Tigris in Mosul, after driving back Islamic State militants in the city's south-west.

The Federal Police Rapid Response Force advanced into the Jawsaq district on Monday and reached the Fourth Bridge.

Mosul's five bridges have been badly damaged in fighting since October.

But once it is repaired, the Fourth Bridge could help the military bring in reinforcements and supplies from the government-held east of the city.

Meanwhile, UN aid workers say they are extremely concerned by the humanitarian situation in remaining IS-held areas of western Mosul, where about 750,000 people are believed to be living.

The World Food Programme spoke to a number of families there who reported that food prices were rising drastically or that they were unable to get food at all.

"The situation is unbelievable," a 46-year-old man was quoted as saying. "There is no food, no clean water, no gas for heating, no medicine and no services."

Food in western Mosul has become scarce since the operation to recapture the city began four months ago. IS supply lines have been cut by government forces, who have been supported by US-led coalition air strikes and advisers on the ground.

The Iraqi government announced in January that units from the army, the interior ministry's Counter-Terrorism Service and the Rapid Response Force had "fully liberated" eastern Mosul.

Since launching the operation to retake the west of the city a week ago, they have driven militants from the international airport, a military base, a power station and several residential areas, according to the military.

On Monday, the operation's overall commander, Lt Gen Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah, announced that Rapid Response officers had "liberated" Jawsaq and reached the western foot of the Fourth Bridge.

"That means the bridge is under control on both sides," military spokesman Brig Gen Yahya Rasool told AFP news agency.

It is the southernmost of Mosul's bridges, which were disabled by US-led coalition air strikes before being damaged by retreating IS militants.

As government forces control the eastern bank of the Tigris, engineers could now repair the structure or float a pontoon or "ribbon" bridge on the water alongside it.

Troops initially made rapid gains on Mosul's western outskirts, but they have faced more resistance in densely-populated residential areas, where militants have been using sniper rifles, drones, anti-tank missiles, mortars and suicide car bombs.

Gen Rasool described the street fighting as "intense", but added: "Our forces are fighting deep in the west, the enemy is broken."

The western side of Mosul includes the old city and the Great Mosque of al-Nuri, where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed the creation of a "caliphate" in July 2014, after the jihadist group overran large parts of northern and western Iraq.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi government forces and allied militias recaptured on Monday a village in northwestern Mosul and killed 15 Islamic State militants as the security campaign grinds on to recapture the city.

The Joint Operations Command said in a statement the forces recaptured the village of Kherbat Atshana, close to a mountainous area recaptured a few days ago.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units), the paramilitary force fighting Islamic State with the Iraqi government, said through its media service it had killed 15 members of the group while advancing towards the nearby Darnaj village, close to the Atshana hills area which PMUs took over recently.

Iraqi forces recaptured eastern Mosul late January after three months of fighting, and are carrying on with U.S.-led coalition-backed operations to retake the west since last Sunday.Iraqi and coalition generals estimated the time needed to retake that area by six months.

Earlier on Monday, Iraqi troops recaptured the Josaq and Tayaran districts, and took over a bridge connecting western and eastern Mosul.

The United Nations fears fighting in western Mosul could displace at least 250.000 civilians.

Retaking Mosul could represent a fatal blow to Islamic State’s existence in Iraq. The group still maintains smaller pockets in Anbar, Kirkuk and Salahuddin.

Intensive clashes erupted on Monday between Iraqi security forces and ISIS terrorist group in al-Dawasa street in Mousl's right bank, sources told The Baghdad Post.

In exclusive statements, the sources said that ISIS used cars owned by civilians to block streets in al-Dandan neighborhood in Mousl's right bank.

Iraqi security forces have reopened streets blocked by ISIS terrorists in order to be able to storm the city, the sources explained.

Earlier on the day, Iraqi security forces recaptured al-Tayaran district excepting its main street. A lot of explosive devices were planted there and still being dismantled by Iraqi corps of engineers due to the intensive fighting witnessed in the city.

IMIS terrorists continue to molest local residents on Mosul left bank

IMIS terrorists

The elements of Iran Militia in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) were deployed near some Mosul's all-girl schools under  the pretense of maintaining security, eyewitnesses told the Baghdad Post.

The militants are molesting local residents there, they added.

The IMIS terrorists are also arresting youth, claiming that they harass schoolgirls, the witnesses further noted.

Furthermore, the terrorist militiamen lead citizens to unknown destinations and secret jails.

IMIS militia did not partake in the offensive launched to retake Mosul left bank.

But they are on the loose on its streets now, committing heinous crimes amid silence of officials.

UN Provides Iraqi IDPs with Legal Assistance

27/02/2017 - 21:15

UN Provides Iraqi IDPs with Legal Assistance

ERBIL — UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, with its partners has provided legal assistance to help more than two and a half thousand Iraqis displaced as a result of the Mosul offensive receive new civil identity cards and other documents that were lost, damaged or destroyed as they fled their homes seeking safety, said the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

“As many as 49% of the displaced Iraqis interviewed by UNHCR protection partners were found to need help in getting new civil documentation.  Many families lost their documents or their papers were  damaged as they fled the conflict zones.  Other families were told that birth and marriage documents, which have been issued when their areas were under the control of armed groups, were not legally recognized by the government of Iraq and needed replacement,” reads the statement.

Civil identity cards are vital for Iraqi citizens to be able to travel and pass through checkpoints to access safe areas.  In addition, these cards are required for families to be able to access public services, such as food assistance, education, healthcare and housing assistance.

“It took considerable time and effort to help the displaced families with new documentation”, said Bruno Geddo, UNHCR’s Representative in Iraq.  “Our teams and partners have had to adopt some innovative methods and advocate tirelessly in order to get around some of the difficulties and lengthy bureaucratic requirements.”

“People have been in a legal limbo. While there is still a lot of work, we have managed to help thousands of people to obtain legal documents and the mobile court facilities have been an important part of this success.  We urge the authorities to expand this modality to other areas.”

UNHCR protection teams have worked with partners Qandil, Harikar NGO, CDO (Civil Development Organization) and INTERSOS, who have provided legal assistance through lawyers to facilitate the issuance of required documents to displaced Iraqis.

Movement restrictions for IDPs from Mosul prevent individuals from leaving camps, which hinders their direct access to the Civil Affairs Offices or courts in order to replace or apply for new documents.  In the camps east of Mosul, a mobile court had been operating at Khazer M1 camp and the two Hasansham camps, to assist with the issuance of new documents related to birth, death, marriage and divorce.  A notary also visits the camps to issue power of attorney that allows the lawyers to act on behalf of the IDPs in a legal process.

Additionally, a representative from the Nineveh Health Institute has been visiting the camps to help issue birth certificates for new-born children and replace birth certificates issued under the control of armed groups.

Iraqi Forces Retake a Key Bridge in Mosul

The bridge will allow the army to move troops and supplies to west Mosul

 27/02/2017 - 22:54

Iraqi Forces Retake a Key Bridge in Mosul
MOSUL — Iraqi forces have managed to reach a key bridge in the city of Mosul as they pushed forward with their offensive to clear the Islamic State (IS) militants from the western half of the city.

The Iraqi forces seized control of the fourth bridge across the Tigris River on Monday which it will be of immense help for the Iraqi troops to move on to the west Mosul. However the Fighting in Mosul has badly damaged the bridge which needs to be repaired to regain access across the river.

Meanwhile, the Federal Police's Rapid Response forces managed to liberate the Josaq district in west Mosul, said the commander of Nineveh operations Abdul-Amir Yarallah.

The commander stated the IS military equipment was inflicted with huge damage.

Western half of Mosul consists of over 35 neighbourhoods which makes up about 40% of the city and an estimated number of 650,000 people are trapped there.

Iraqi forces, backed by coalition air power, launched a new phase of operations on February 19th to reclaim the western half of Mosul which is yet under IS control. Since the beginning of the operations, the Iraqi forces have managed to retake a number of areas including Mosul airport and Ghazlani military camp.

ISIS nears defeat as the Iraqi Army liberates two neighborhoods in western Mosul

28/02/2017

Iraqi-Federal-Police-in-Mosul-city-696x3

On Monday, the Iraqi Army seized the Tal Al-Ruman and Tayaran districts in the western part of Mosul city amid fierce urban warfare with defiant Islamic State militants, thus reaching the outskirts of the ISIS-held Dawasah and Al-Danadan neighbourhoods.

This highly important advance was secured by the Iraqi Federal Police and the Iraqi Army’s so-called Rapid Response Units.

In addition, Iraqi security forces secured both banks of the ‘4th bridge’ after initially storming the Ma’mun and Al-Jawsaq districts three days ago. This bridge will enable for government troops in eastern Mosul to join the battle for western Mosul more easily.

Later on, ISIS launched a massive counter-offensive on the Ma’mun neighborhood in a last-ditch effort to turn the tables on the Iraqi Army; however, the attack proved unsuccessful and 5 VBIED’s (vehicle-borne improvised explosive device) were destroyed.

Around 100 ISIS militants were neutralized in the Tal Afar and Mosul pocket on Monday, reaching roughly the same daily death toll as previous days.

Furthermore, at least 25 jihadist militants were killed by the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) in the ‘Atshana hills region west of Mosul while 18 ISIS fighters were killed-in-action during the Ma’mun counter-attack.

Meanwhile, over 40 ISIS combattants were eliminated by the Iraqi Air Force during sorties on an ISIS outpost in the Jazirat Salahuddin desert. This was supposedly an ‘Inghimasi’ (suicide/infiltration) unit planning an attack on Samarra, a source close to Al-Masdar said.

The Iraqi Army also suffered heavy casualties of its own, mostly during mopping-up operations inside newly captured districts that are usually littered with booby traps.
