Iraq, January 26, 2017
pic864009.jpg?26884

They have been waiting for two and half years and the children of Iraq’s east Mosul are flocking to enrol in their reopened schools, eager not to waste another day.

“It’s a great day, today we are giving our children their right to receive an education,” said Ghassan Ahmed, queueing with his seven-year-old in the yard of Farahedi primary school.

The red-and-yellow walls of the school in Muharbeen, a neighbourhood of northeastern Mosul that was retaken from the Islamic State jihadist group, are still riddled with bullet holes.

Life is starting to return to the city’s east bank, which Iraqi forces have now completely retaken from IS, 100 days into a vast military operation launched in mid-October on the jihadists’ last major stronghold in the country.

Ghassan Ahmed was a professor at the University of Mosul before IS seized the city in June 2014.

Like many other parents, he refused to send his child to school under IS’s self-proclaimed “caliphate”. His son has never been to any school.

“I kept them at home and started teaching them the official curriculum of the Iraqi government myself,” he said.

Across the street, the charred carcass of a building stands as a reminder that only days ago the entire neighbourhood was a battlefield where jihadists countered advancing Iraqi forces with suicide car bombs, snipers and mortar fire.

Mohammed, a nine-year-old from the neighbourhood, said IS burnt down the house as part of tactics to prevent raids by US and other warplanes on their positions.

‘Education cannot wait’

Just like 250 other children, Mohammed was at the Farahedi school for the first time since the jihadists took over his city.

He said he could not wait to return to school despite the fact that it still lacked running water, electricity and schoolbooks.

“I’m super happy to be going back to class. I want to become a doctor,” he said with a toothy grin.

As an explosion rumbled in the distance, the birds fell briefly silent but Mohammed didn’t flinch and went off to play with his friends.

In east Mosul, which a minority fled when the offensive was launched but where half a million residents stayed, 30 schools reopened this week and a total of 16,000 children were enrolled.

“Education can’t wait. It must be a priority,” Maulid Warfa, who heads the UN children’s agency UNICEF in Arbil, the nearby capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region, told AFP.

“Schools can be a tool to slowly help them heal from the trauma… Many children in this city have seen way too much destruction and death.”

According to the Britain-based charity Save The Children, at least 300,000 children live on Mosul’s west bank, which is still fully controlled by IS and expected to see bitter street fighting in the weeks ahead.

Millions of children have lived under the tyrannical rule of IS since the group proclaimed its caliphate in June 2014.

Many were kept out of school for more than two years, some forcibly enlisted as child soldiers.

Building the future

The jihadist group has lost about two-thirds of the territory it once controlled in Iraq, but its trademark ultraviolence has traumatised the population.

The immediate challenge, however, is to bring children back to school, UNICEF’s Warfa said.

“With two million inhabitants in Mosul, bearing in mind that 35 percent of the population are children, we’re really talking about a huge number of children who will need to go back to school,” he said.

“It’s a huge task,” said Warfa, adding that another 40 schools were scheduled to reopen in coming weeks.

In Zuhoor, another neighbourhood of northeast Mosul, Haider Adnan is one of the oldest returning pupils to stand in line behind the headmaster’s desk with his enrolment form in hand.

At 18, he said he wanted to complete his secondary education before signing up for university and hoped to learn about “history, geography and real religion”.

Haider was one of a minority who attended the schools run by IS, whose teachers he said spent most of their time extolling the lives and achievements of the group’s supremo Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and other jihadist figures.

“History is important because it is the life of our forefathers — how they lived and they evolved,” he said. “It becomes a lesson that teaches us how to build our own future.”

Danish warship heading to fight ISIS in Iraq, Syria

"All Join In On The Eradication Of Isis"

Danish warship

The Danish frigate Peter Willemoes has upped anchor and is on its way to the Middle East to take part in the ongoing battle against the ISIS terrorist group, The Copenhagen Post said on Friday.

The ship departed from Korsor and is on its way to link up with the US-led Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) in the Mediterranean Sea. Peter Willemoes will become part of the aircraft carrier group Carrier Strike Group 2, which consists of 12 ships in support of the US carrier USS George HW Bush.

“Operating in a carrier group like this will strengthen Denmark’s ability to enter into complex multi-national naval operations in the future,” said Rear Admiral Frank Trojahn, the head of the Danish Navy.

The mission, which will last until the beginning of May, will involve the Danish frigate assisting the carrier group in the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Arabian Gulf and part of the Indian Ocean.

The Danish ship’s primary task will be to collect and share radar images with the rest of the units in the group, but it may also maintain co-ordination and control of air traffic around the group.

Peter Willemoes was the first of three Danish frigates commissioned by the Navy in 2014 – the others being Iver Huitfeldt and Niels Juel – and is built as an air-defence frigate, the first of its kind in Danish naval history.

The frigate has radars that can monitor areas with a radius of 400 kilometres and sail 16,660 kilometres on one fuel tank (also known as its ‘action radius’). It has a crew of about 150.

16 ISIS terrorists killed in US air raid near Syria borders

"Kill Them All"

A total of 16 ISIS militants were killed in an US-led coalition air raid that targeted Al-Qa'im town near the Iraqi-Syrian borders.

In a press release, Iraqi army 7th Division said the air raid targeted the terrorist group in west of Anbar governorate.

The battle for Mosul is the biggest ground operation in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion. A victory by the 100,000-strong US-backed pro-government force would probably spell the end for ISIS self-styled caliphate that has ruled over millions of people in Iraq and Syria since 2014.

A glimmer of hope in the battle against ISIS in Mosul - TWW

"These Young Children Deserve Peace To Live Their Lives & Grow Up And It's Coming"

January 27 2017 02:02 PM
.
.

The World Weekly

Children played football, chanted for the camera, and happily squeezed into the benches of their classrooms. This was no ordinary scene in an area that had until very recently been under brutal ISIS rule for over two years, "The World Weekly" reported.

Iraq is often in the headlines for the violence that has wrecked the country, whether it is the grueling battles against ISIS or the almost daily bombings by its fighters. This week, however, the UN reported that over 16,000 children were able to go back to school in eastern Mosul, recently cleared from ISIS fighters after weeks of intense battles.

“Just a few weeks ago, these neighborhoods were gripped by violence. Today, girls and boys are heading back to class,” said Peter Hawkins, representative of the UN’s children’s fund in Iraq.

The announcement that 30 schools had reopened in the eastern part of Mosul, IS’ Iraqi ‘capital’, came on the same day Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi confirmed the full recapture of all districts east of the Tigris River, which divides Iraq’s second city.

“Children were flashing the victory sign as our teams visited,” UNICEF spokeswoman Sharon Behn Nogueira told The World Weekly. Another 40 schools are expected to open within weeks to accommodate 40,000 more students.

Under its rule, ISIS imposed a rigid curriculum to indoctrinate children, excluding subjects it deemed atheists. Maths classes were infused with military references to the ‘heroes of the caliphate’, leading many parents to stop sending their children to school.

Image1_12017271426725579379.png
Now a certain sense of normalcy is in the air, as people walk in the streets, shops reopen and residents patch up their houses, Ms. Behn Nogueira said.

Nonetheless, challenges lie ahead. Not least, violence could spill over into the east as Iraqi forces prepare to retake the western part of Mosul.

“The battle over western Mosul will be much more difficult,” said Iraqi journalist Mustafa Habib, who writes for Niqash. Speaking from Baghdad, he told TWW there were no trusted local security forces to secure the east during the assault on the western part of the city. On top of that, west Mosul is a different terrain, home to the Old City and a warren of alleys no armoured vehicle can pass through.

Around 750,000 civilians still live in the western part, raising the spectre of civilian casualties as ISIS continues to use residents as human shields. The UN humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, Lise Grande, said reports from inside the western part of the city were “distressing”, with prices of food and basic supplies soaring and some families being forced to “burn furniture to stay warm”.

The symbolism of recapturing Mosul would as significant as the strategic victory. It was in a mosque in western Mosul that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, dressed in black garments, proclaimed the establishment of a “caliphate” under his rule in 2014.

In any case, Mr. Habib said, the group’s ‘secret headquarters’ are currently in the border area between Iraq and Syria, where many ISIS leaders have sought refuge.

As Iraqi troops were bogged down hundreds of kilometres away in Mosul, the government did not have enough troops to operate in this region, the Iraqi journalist explained. Reports this week suggested IS was aiming to strengthen its presence in Syria as it lost ground in Iraq.

Image1_1201727134545107947643.png

Back in eastern Mosul, however, people are already trying to move on from their two-year horror. “What is most important is to help re-establish all the basic services as quickly as possible, so that the children and families in Mosul and the surrounding villages can return to a normal life,” Ms. Behn Nogueira said. As UNICEF visited the newly liberated areas, “one teenage girl was quite defiant, saying this was her land, her city, her country, and that she just wanted to move on with her life”.

More than 5,000 people who fled the eastern half of Mosul due to recent fighting have returned to their homes in the last two days, Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency quoted an Iraqi relief worker as saying on Friday.

"Some 5,200 people have departed the Al-Khazir and Hassan Sham camps [east of Mosul] and returned to the city’s liberated eastern neighborhoods," Iraqi Red Crescent (IRC) official Iyad Rafid told Anadolu Agency.

The return of internally displaced people to eastern Mosul, he said, comes in advance of a fresh round of army operations aimed at wresting western Mosul from the Daesh terrorist group.

Relief workers, meanwhile, have stepped up humanitarian efforts inside liberated eastern Mosul.

"IRC teams have distributed more than 800 food packages among residents of Mosul’s eastern Al-Mithaq district," Zaki Yacoub, director of the IRC’s branch in Nineveh province (of which Mosul is the regional capital), told Anadolu Agency.

According to Jassim al-Jaff, Iraq’s minister of displacement and migration, between 200,000 and 250,000 people are expected to flee western Mosul as fighting heats up there between the army and Daesh.
