Iraqi PM visits front-lines in Mosul

BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:50 P.M.) – The Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-‘Abadi made a scheduled trip to the front-lines in Mosul on Tuesday in order to inspect the forces battling the Islamic State (ISIS) terror organization.

The Iraqi Prime Minister was pictured by local activists meeting with soldiers from the army and federal police, while also visiting the liberated areas of Mosul.

‘Abadi’s visit today marks the first time in nearly three years that any Iraqi Prime Minister has traveled to the Nineveh Governorate located in Iraq’s northwestern countryside.

I really appreciate your comment here, Theseus. I suspect that the retaking of Mosul is by far the most difficult task being a significantly large urban area with civilians existing amongst the fighting as with the other significant Iraqi urban centers retaken from ISIS. Once Mosul is fully wrested from the ISIS control, the rest of the Iraqi areas to be purged of ISIS control should occur fairly rapidly being smaller with fewer civilians and, hence, likely fewer ISIS militants. For the non urban/town areas where ISIS is highly exposed with few to no civilians to inhibit operations, ISIS will be in the open and would be like a Coalition duck shoot.

From a foreign troop/militia standpoint, my opinion is Iran and other non Coalition entities will need to be dealt with, once ISIS control of Iraqi areas is eliminated, to prevent their crimes against humanity as well as other subversive influences they exert to disrupt the Security and Stability of Iraq as well as having to be fully removed from Iraq. My opinion is this issue will be high on the agenda once ISIS is no longer controlling any area in Iraq. I suspect Crimes Against Humanity via ICC indictment and prosecution could be a significant, quick, and effective lever. However, there may be other tools in the tool kit to have these foreign entities leave Iraq quickly. The Coalition forces likely have a Status Of Forces Agreement sufficient to limit Coalition operations in Iraq and not infringe on Iraq's National Sovereignty.

On a somewhat related note, my opinion is the significant sectarian concerns would need to be addressed, possibly through the National Reconciliation and National Guard Law (and yes, Article 140 as well as HCL), to prevent armed sectarian conflict in Iraq. If effective measures are not sufficiently deployed rapidly, then I am afraid international investment would be inhibited and Iraq could possibly slide into some form of Civil War with a dysfunctional or completely dismembered GOI. Civil or International Wars, in my opinion, can not bomb a country into prosperity while killing off the civilians. As a result, 2018, 2019, 2020, or sometime thereafter would be a fantasy for any economic reform in Iraq. Just because some plan is in place for some sort of economic reform with a timeline does not make the plan the actual occurrence on the published timeline.

I think much sooner rather than later is the actual occurrence for the IQD going international along with all the implications for the IQD going international to facilitate the rebuilding of Iraq and development of the economic sectors (some existing, some preexisting, and some future sectors) via a tidal wave of foreign investment to substantially and rapidly improve the Iraqi standard of living to avert an impoverished internal conflict.

On a somewhat comparable note (maybe not so comparable), I was in the coastal area of China in 1991 and in central China in 1997 for work. The most developed areas were along the coastal areas during this time period. I thought the economic development in central China in 1997 exceeded the economic development of the coastal area of China in 1991. In these six years, the economic shock wave appeared to be very, very strong. It happened in China (under different circumstances) and I suspect it will happen in Iraq, too. Many of the modernization infrastructures are already in place in Iraq to make this happen from a banking stand point. Just need to flip the switch.

Just my opinion and :twocents:

Go Moola Nova!

Barzani and Abadi Satisfied with Coordination in Battle on IS

ERBIL — In a meeting on Tuesday in Erbil, Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani and Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi reviewed the latest developments in the ongoing operation to liberate Mosul from the Islamic State (IS), Kurdistan Region Presidency reported.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the level of coordination and cooperation between the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces who have both been actively engaged in the Mosul operation.

"They also expressed their condolences to the loved ones and families of those who paid the ultimate price within the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces."

Barzani reiterated the significance of preparations for the post-IS Mosul and that a plan of reconciliation and rebuilding is of equal importance to the military operation which is currently underway to completely retake the city.

The pair hoped for improvement of the relations between Baghdad and Erbil and that "the Mosul military operation on which both the Peshmerga and the Iraqi forces shed blood should certainly bring Baghdad and Erbil closer to one another," the source added.

Glad to see that they are at least talking face to face themselves.

Thanks Tigergorzow.

I do believe they are both on the same sheet of music meaning compromise to make both parties happy.   The "Liberation Of Mosul" is nearing so this should kick start all important items to complete this ride IMHO.

Looks kind of like Abadi is telling the Kurds to stop bickering amongst themselves. I think the HCL is already done and just needs to be signed and published. Plus a small celebration for a job well done on both sides for Mosul!!!

Speaker of the Iraqi parliament Saleem al-Jubouri on Wednesday warned of possible political standoff following the fall of ISIS terror group, saying civil state is the only solution for including all Iraqis under its canopy.

At the fifth Sulaymaniyah Forum held to discuss the post-ISIS era, he said war on ISIS will come to an end. But the political standoff will erupt, with a possibility to turn into militancy especially by factions possessing militias or seizing weapons.

Al-Jubouri also called for 'bracing for this period'.

Yet, he called for convening a conference on reconstruction and reconciliation under the patronage of regional and international sponsors, demanding international supervision for the outcome of the conference before holding the legislative election.

Iran's plans to take over Iraq is complete they control the highest court, the Cbi and enough votes in parlement, adding these few Sunni city's to the list of what they control is just the icing on the cake for them.

You could ask them to leave, maybe even threaten military action if they don't but why would they ever listen or take anyone seriously since no one has ever stood up to them before.

If it were up to me I would put in place enough military so they cannot move from the small erea they call there base in the citys, bring in enough busses to hold them all ask the Iranian general to pack them up you have 24hrs, if there not gone in 24 hrs start bombing.

Hashd al-Shaabi: Peshmerga Should Retreat to Positions before 2014

Hashd al-Shaabi: Peshmerga Should Retreat to Positions before 2014

ERBIL — Kurdish Peshmerga forces should withdraw to the positions they were stationed before the Islamic State (IS) first attacked in 2014, said Hashd al-Shaabi spokesperson.

“We will not allow the Peshmerga occupy territories under the pretext of advancing against Daesh,” Karim Nouri, the official from the Shi’ite militia group, told BasNews on Tuesday, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State (IS).

However, Nouri denied any intention to enter military confrontations with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, saying that the two sides are even sharing some front lines against IS.

He further explained that Hashd al-Shaabi is also against any change in the administrational devisions in Nineveh after the liberation of the province.

Commenting on Nouri’s controversial remarks, Halgord Hikmat, a spokesperson for Kurdistan Region’s Peshmerga Ministry, referred to a previous agreement between Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, according to which the Peshmerga forces will remain in the areas they freed from IS before the beginning of the Mosul operation on 17th October 2016.

In regards to the areas Peshmerga liberated after 17th October  of last year, Erbil and Baghdad can negotiate the presence of the Kurdish forces or their withdrawal, Hikmat stated.
