New Zealand and Australian troops have trained their first group of Iraqi police officers at their joint training base in Iraq, the Global Times quoted the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) as saying on Tuesday.

About 1,900 members of the Iraqi Federal Police had completed five weeks of basic combat training at Camp Taji, north of Baghdad, bringing to more than 20,000 the total number of Iraqi security forces trained by the joint training task group.

The graduates comprised the first batch of police trained by Task Group Taji in the fight against ISIS terrorists.

"This is not just a training milestone," Major General Tim Gall, the Commander Joint Forces New Zealand, said in a statement.

"The latest batch of trainees to march out now form part of stabilization forces who are working to ensure that the gains made against ISIS -- in Ramadi, Fallujah, east Mosul and other parts of Iraq -- are sustained," said Gall.

The task force of about 100 New Zealand and 300 Australian troops was ensuring a steady flow of capable fighters to sustain the Iraqi military's counter-offensive against ISIS and keep the militants from regaining footholds in areas that had been cleared.

New Zealand had been contributing troops to train Iraqi forces May 2015.

The New Zealand government announced in June 2016 that it had extended the NZDF contribution to the training mission until November 2018.

ISIS drone on Tuesday shelled a school on the left bank of Mosul, special sources told Baghdad Post.

The sources said the drone dropped hand-made grenades on Yafa primary school in al-Muthna district in the left bank of Mosul.

No injuries were reported among students and the teaching staff.

The sources said study will be suspended till next week over fears of recurrent attacks by the terrorist group

Over the past two years, academic study in Mosul has been halted after ISIS took control of the city.

As many as 30,000 students have returned to their schools after the Iraqi army announced the success of operations to retake the left bank of Mosul last month.

World leaders hailed Iraq victories over ISIS as 'miraculous': Abadi

February 21 2017 09:04 PM

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi on Tuesday said that the world leaders described the victories made by the government over ISIS terrorists as miraculous.

ISIS terrorists are rapidly collapsing, he added in a press conference.

When it comes to our neighbors, he says, what we have in common is much bigger than our differences.

Abadi yet stated that 'forming axes among political trends' is refused in Iraq.

On February 19, Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced the launch of the next phase of the operation to root out the militants from their stronghold, an effort that began four months ago.

Iraqi soldiers advanced toward the airport south of Mosul on February 20, battling in the face of reported tough resistance from IS terrorists desperate to fight for their self-declared capital in Iraq.

On February 19, an army commander said forces led by federal police units recaptured the villages located south of Mosul, including Athbah, leaving them within striking distance of the airport.

ALBU SAIF — U.S.-backed Iraqi forces reached the vicinity of Mosul airport on Monday (February 21) after dislodging Islamic State fighters from a nearby hill, the Iraqi military said in a statement.

The hill is close to Albu Saif, a village two miles from the airport.

"We are in Albu Saif and we started to clear houses from bombs, and we are conducting house-to-house search," said Police Lieutenant Colonel Hussein.

The Iraqi forces launched the offensive on Sunday (February 19) to capture the west side of Mosul that remains under the control of the militants. The militants were dislodged from the eastern part of the city last month.

The Iraqi forces aim to take the airport, just south of Mosul, and turn it into a close support base for the offensive into the city itself.

The militants are essentially under siege in western Mosul, along with an estimated 750,000 civilians, after they were forced out of the eastern part of the city in the first phase of the campaign that ended last month, after 100 days of fighting.

Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights said hundreds of civilians in Mosul have been either killed or injured since the anti-ISIS military operation began.

The incessant weeks-long bombardment of Mosul began last October 17 claimed the lives of 762 civilians and wounded 1, 279 including hundreds of women and children.

Newspapers quoted the observatory as saying that thousands of civilians are still trapped in Mosul, especially in the western side which is under heavy bombardment by the US-led coalition as well as a ground offensive.

They are facing dreadful humanitarian conditions including shortage in foodstuff, electricity, drinking water and medical supplies.

Newspapers closely observing the situation in Mosul reported that 90 civilians, including 32 children, were killed and 140 others injured over the past three days.

On Monday, jets of US-led coalition bombed Al-Shifaa neighborhood in western Mosul, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries.

On February 19, Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced the launch of the next phase of the operation to root out the militants from their stronghold, an effort that began four months ago.

Dozens of Islamic State members killed in airstrikes at western Mosul district

Airstrike by the US-led international coalition aircraft.

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Dozens of Islamic State members were killed on Tuesday in airstrikes by U.S.-led international coalition fighter jets in western Mosul, according to a local source.

Alsumaria News quoted the source as saying that dozens of IS extremists were killed and wounded in intense airstrikes on al-Jawsaq district, a major stronghold for the group in western Mosul. “The strike destroyed the headquarter completely,” said the source.

The group prevented civilians from approaching the strike’s scene fearing that information about the death toll might be leaked, the source noted.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared a new security offensive on Sunday to invade the western region of Mosul and drive out Islamic State militants. Government forces retook the eastern region late January after three months of battles.

Commanders have said they had recaptured nearly 17 villages in that region since operations launched on Sunday.

Mosul fell in IS’s grip in 2014, along with several other Iraqi regions. Losing Mosul, the previously-proclaimed capital of IS’s “Islamic Caliphate”, will be the hardest blow to its existence in Iraq.

Military officials from the international coalition had predicted the city to be recaptured entirely within six months.

The United Nations had warned battles could displace 250.000 people in the western region.

British suicide bomber dies in attack on Iraqi forces in Mosul

Ronald Fiddler, who changed his name after converting to Islam Image caption A picture of Fiddler was released by the so-called Islamic State group

A British IS fighter who died in a suicide bomb attack on Iraqi forces in Mosul is a former Guantanamo Bay detainee, the BBC understands.

The self-styled Islamic State group said two days ago that Abu-Zakariya al-Britani detonated a car bomb at an Iraqi army base in Tal Gaysum, south-west of Mosul.

He is believed to have been originally known as Ronald Fiddler.

Fiddler, 50 and from Manchester, was sent to Guantanamo Bay in 2002.

IS has now published a photograph of Fiddler, who was also known as Jamul-Uddin al-Harith before taking the nom-du-guerre Abu-Zakariya al-Britani.

Wife's journey

He had been seized by US forces in Pakistan in 2001, before being sent to Guantanamo.

US interrogators found he provided useful information to them about the Taliban's methods, and he was released after two years.

The Daily Mail reported Fiddler received a million pounds in compensation from the government when he came back to the UK.

The BBC has seen IS registration papers signed by Fiddler in April 2014 when he crossed into Syria from Turkey.

He volunteered to be a fighter, saying his knowledge of Islam was basic.

His wife told the Daily Mirror that she and their five children went to Syria try to persuade him to come back, but failed, and they ended up having to flee for their lives from IS territory.

UK fighters

Afzal Ashraf, a former counter-terrorism adviser to the United States in Iraq, told the BBC this incident demonstrated that "some of the people in Guantanamo Bay were up to no good".

"It also throws into question some of the organisations that were supporting him, that brought him back [from Guantanamo].

"Some of them were associated a little too closely with this radical ideology, and they use the legal system - freedoms of speech, the importance of the rule of law - in order to subvert some of our systems in the UK and elsewhere."

According to figures published by the UK government last year, about 850 people regarded as a national security concern have gone to become fighters in the Middle East.

Of those, just under half have returned to the UK and approximately 15% are dead.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "The UK has advised for some time against all travel to Syria, and against all travel to large parts of Iraq.

"As all UK consular services are suspended in Syria and greatly limited in Iraq, it is extremely difficult to confirm the whereabouts and status of British nationals in these areas."

Germany’s Supreme Court Issues Arrest warrant for IS Commander

He is responsible for crimes against against the Yezidi minority in Syria and Iraq

22 February 2017

Germany’s Supreme Court Issues Arrest warrant for IS Commander

LEEDS — The Supreme Court of Germany authorized in December last year, the issuance of an arrest warrant for an IS commander who is allegedly responsible for a series of war crimes, and crimes against humanity, including genocide perpetrated against the Yezidi minority in Syria and Iraq.

The IS commander’s name remains unknown due to security reasons. He was identified for prosecution by the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office. He is believed to be high-ranking and responsible for the abduction and sexual enslavement of thousands of Yezidi women.

The consequences for the IS member will be even more severe after the United Nations (UN) recognized that the crimes committed by IS against the Yezidi population in Iraq amounts to genocide.

However, despite that, no IS members have been prosecuted for their actions up to this date. This arrest warrant issued by the German court is seen as an opportunity to change the fact that no IS member have been charged or sent to prison for their crimes.

Amal Clooney, the attorney of Nadia Murad and other Yazidi survivors who have been held by the IS militants, congratulated the German Federal Prosecutor, Christian Ritscher, and his legal team for the achievement.

Back in August 2014, the IS terrorists attacked the Sinjar region in northern Iraq, killing thousands of men and taking thousands of Yezidi women and children in captivity. The women were forced into “sex slavery”, whereas the young boys were trained to become child soldiers. Over 360,000 Yazidis were displaced in a matter of days, thousands of whom remain in IS-captivity up to this date.

Mosul offensive: Iraqi army seizes key town of Abu Saif

  • 21 February 2017

Quentin Sommerville reports from the front line where forced are 'within sight' of Mosul

Iraqi forces have taken a strategically important town close to western Mosul on the third day of their renewed push against so-called Islamic State (IS).

The taking of Abu Saif means troops now have a direct line of sight to the Mosul's airport and its heavily-populated western areas.

But a network of tunnels under the small town means there is still resistance, reports the BBC's Quentin Sommerville from the scene.

Eastern Mosul was liberated last month.

Our correspondent, who is embedded with Iraqi forces, says troops are now trying to secure Abu Saif.

Police special forces are moving through the streets and across rooftops, backed by helicopters and artillery.

An airstrike overnight destroyed a house full of suspected IS fighters, killing all seven people inside.

Quentin Sommerville tweets: That strange feeling ... waking up in a room that IS fighters had been staying in only yesterday. Quentin Sommerville tweet: Here an Islamic State permission slip for leave. He didn't make it. Now smeared with his blood.

Troops had come under heavy fire as they advanced on the town. Progress had been slowed by improvised bombs planted by IS along the route.

The bodies of some IS fighters were seen by the roadside, apparently hit by mortar fire or other artillery.

As the army reached Abu Saif, a small group of civilians waving a white flag was spotted.

Thousands of Iraqi troops, backed by artillery and air power, are involved in the assault to retake Mosul - and have now all but surrounded western parts of the city.

Map showing who controls the centre of Mosul in Iraq

The UN has voiced concern about the welfare of civilians trapped in the city, amid reports that they could number up to 650,000.

Leaflets warning residents of an imminent offensive were earlier dropped over western Mosul.

Military officials say western districts, with their narrow, winding streets, may prove a bigger challenge than the east.

Although slightly smaller than the east, western Mosul is more densely populated and includes districts seen as pro-IS.

All bridges linking the east and west of the city, across the Tigris river, were destroyed in the earlier offensive.

That began on 17 October, more than two years after jihadists overran Mosul as they spread across much of northern and western Iraq.

The UN said in late January that almost half of all the casualties in Mosul were civilians.

At least 1,096 have been killed and 694 injured across Nineveh province since the start of October.

IRAQI FORCES REACH VICINITY OF MOSUL AIRPORT
Iraq, February 21, 2017

U.S.-backed Iraqi forces reached the vicinity of Mosul airport on Monday after dislodging Islamic State fighters from a nearby hill, the Iraqi military said in a statement.

The Iraqi forces launched the offensive on Sunday to capture the west side of Mosul that remains under the control of the militants. The militants were dislodged from the eastern part of the city last month.

The Iraqi forces aim to take the airport, just south of Mosul, and turn it into a close support base for the offensive into the city itself.

Shortly before reaching the airport’s premises, the forces invaded a major Iraqi military base in Ghizlani, which had been under Islamic State control since taking over Mosul in 2014.

Losing Mosul would be the most serious defeat the extremist group would have sustained in the years that followed its emergence in 2014 to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate. The group has lost thousands of personnel, including senior leaders, and has been struck with divisions since security operations to retake the city launched in mid October.

Iraqi commanders said Monday the total of villages recaptured by the government forces and allied militias since Sunday reached 17, and a total of 120 square kilometers of soil.

What do you mean the participation of Green Berets forces at the Battle of Mosul

Iranian regime's terrorist and militia Siqatlan in order to keep Aldaasha terrorism, or any other terrorism because it is poised to delay the war on global terrorism single state.

Arab feather.png Hamid Gailani [published on 02.22.2017, the number: 10551, (p . 9)]

Military sources confirmed that the extension of the floating bridges between the two shores of the Tigris River to cross to the right coast of the task of Mosul dangerous. Question Was the coalition forces can overcome the destruction of bridges during the battle to liberate neighborhoods in the left side, most of them or some of them, if the preparation and planning for the battle enough to stop the waste in the blood of fighters and in the infrastructure of the city including bridges practical function in the subsequent battle pages.

James Mattis, US Secretary of Defense in his answer about the possibility of US troops to stay in Iraq after the battle of Mosul, he said, with a smile, the war on terrorism for long and we will stay in Iraq for a while, and praised the capabilities and performance of the regular army Msttrka word fleeting appreciation for the sacrifices; namely the numbers of dead avoid military leaders and cited political reasons related to the morale of the pieces involved.

Government Haider al-Abadi, and accepted by the government of Nouri al-Maliki and his army, who caused all this chaos and tragedy in Mosul and other cities; deliberately hide the true numbers of casualties in the battles to absorb force trauma, and by collecting dead bodies in private, including a large complex near Baghdad International Airport places, then launch distributed by certain percentages and quotas for each province and studied Ptoukitat time calculated.

Military operations in the left coast failed in some joints and fell in front of the organization Daesh attacks, because relying on counter-terrorism in sustaining the momentum of fighting forces, liver large numbers of affiliates, joint operations room had time to redraw their plans and involving other additives forces. Those failures lessons supposed to benefit from them in the battle of the right side, which began its first day in the fast liberalization of 17 village attack of 4 axes ensured by the federal police force with the participation of five teams and the assignment of military aviation.

Offer is similar to the results of the first days of the Battle of Mosul, in the prelude to the liberation of the city center. Military media, and the statements of the leaders before the battle, traded easily edit the right coast in comparison to edit the left coast battles standards, but with the start of the day following statements changed to handle professional objectivity with the reality of the ancient alleyways of the city, the obstacles can not be with them involve military vehicles such as tanks and armor, including means the battle will take the kinetic nature slow and require street fighting from house to house, with the fashions of the guerrilla war that her famous Daesh of planting the bombs or the spread of snipers; Will the battle will drag on into the spring in Umm Rabiein city?

The left side of the connector can be called modern Mosul since most revived almost built in the past 50 years, while the right side, which constitutes 40 percent of the city it's abbreviated life Almousliyn Aracthm, history and social fabric of, and the coexistence of religions and cultures.

The population on the right side than 800 thousand people had been, and still are, to terrorize Daesh from the inside, and the siege from the outside with all the concepts of war, people are starving and thirsty and desperate. UN and humanitarian and human rights organizations deal means the blockade after the government tried to Haider al-Abadi marketing duties sectarian crowd isolation and encirclement; after successive and multi-purpose, goals and trends in the left coast violations and with displaced Hawija, too, the picture looks clearer size of the ugliness of its goals.

Counter-terrorism information to provide six safe corridors to save civilians, who are the most accurate prisoners of words fist Daesh, exposed to the worst-case scenario of the warring parties; leaders in the field already offers proposals for losses expected among civilians; and means in military contexts that the losses and put in military plans, which we explicitly gateway to the expectations of a bloodbath by the type of operations and Alsnov participation and volume risks.

Providing passages may help us in tracing formerly besieged cities and the results of dissolving the terrorist groups and the loss of landmarks, in the media or on the ground; what leads us to the conviction of the existence of safe corridors escape is not for civilians, but the elements of the organization of the Islamic state Bmokhtzaretha Daesh, albeit at the last minute, or even during the process the expected quality in the center of Mosul; fighters of state regulation will not commit suicide are all explosive belts or car bombs; slogan organization survival and expansion, yes, but will fight surprises in the fighting and in the tactics and variables.

Safe corridors to escape Daesh elements as possible with the presence of the one who holds the western axis in Mosul They are specifically sectarian crowd; what has been leaked in a break at halftime or between editing the two banks of the arrival of supplies from the Syrian tenderness to the elements Daesh in Mosul allows us to estimate that it is not complicity only for realism and the exchange of material benefits, but to complete the task of revenge and humiliation, not to forget the most wanted on the list of divine justice for the militias of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, and most of them Iraqi army officers who are full of their Mosul who contributed to the humiliation of velayat-e faqih-year Iran-Iraq war system.

Battle of Mosul in the right coast, global war on terrorism, intelligence and war of unique style, victims first spies, who are in the military usages citizens sacrifice themselves for the delivery of information to the military units irregular, but in the eyes of armed groups operating with traitors deserve to die; these faction accurate information , they are a double-edged if the deal with their information without analysis and match them with lists of air monitoring and multiple sources of information arm.

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis, an indication that the presence of the Americans in Iraq has nothing to do with control of oil, meaning he denied the first part of the American interest and kept the second part which is the whole point, any emphasis on staying to fight terrorism, and terrorism at America's President Donald Trump management means Iran and not only organize Daesh, because Iran sponsors terrorism and the first state in the world.

So the battle on the right coast of the connector is the battle of the coalition in the Trump management time, and failure which has connotations and negative messages scattered. Not to participate in land battles of the coalition forces justified Iraqi politicians and rulers and his military commanders to possess the ability of Iraq to perpetuate the momentum of national resources, and the significance of their sovereignty over the entire territory of the country, that is enough fighters; but national resources phrase meaning lightly the blood of the sons of Iraq, which Astbaanh wisdom of the Dawa party and the state of the Iranian Supreme Leader .

Field reports do not declare the presence of ground forces to the coalition forces, but the early days of the battle to liberate the city of Mosul Center shows us that the American and British forces in the activity of direct interaction with Kdmat pieces attacking movement in preparation for mapping Alastmkan and set points night to jump on the achieved goals as information a well-established treatment, and here comes the the role of an elite special forces troops called with Green Berets name, we mean their US Special forces "Delta force" and British special forces, which are mounted troops flown any airborne training and the efficiency of combat rare, representing the smartest armies in the world and supported by the highest technologies and subject to a special management and moving under international agreements, and always at the ready.

Naming Green Berets associated with the forces of British commandos in World War II, and there are those worn by non-British forces because they have a common history in the fighting; strange that the Iranian regime has a special force unit called the Green Berets, and participated alongside the Syrian regime but defeats do not fit and name.

Iranian regime's terrorist and militia Siqatlan in order to keep Aldaasha terrorism, or any other terrorism because it is poised to delay the war on global terrorism single state; the battle of Mosul is the battle to save the hostages and the rest on lurking.

Iraqi special forces stand to gain stature with victory over IS

The Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service's star is rising as it battles the Islamic State (IS). The unit's success is fueling its influence, which is only expected to grow now that Iraq has launched what it hopes will be the final stage of liberating western Mosul.

Iraq has given the most important task of that operation to the counterterrorism force and its elite unit, the Iraqi Special Operations Forces (ISOF), also known as the Golden Division. ISOF commander Lt. Gen. Sami Arda said Feb. 17, "Anti-terrorism forces will be responsible for undertaking the street battles in the [western half] of Mosul." They also have prepared the plan for the operation, according to the commander of counterterrorism forces Lt. Gen. Abdul Ghani al-Asadi. Now, they are moving toward the western heart of the city from the south.

Al-Monitor learned from a senior source at the counterterrorism bureau, who declined to be named, that after the liberation is completed, bureau officers could serve in high posts, including the premiership’s military secretary, army general staff, military attache in Washington, the Mosul operations command and even the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) presidency.

The counterterrorism bureau has already received increasing attention recently in both security and political spheres. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has been recommending bureau members for positions in both areas, including the new defense minister, Maj. Gen. Irfan Hayali. Hayali previously served as the head of the bureau's training and development unit for 10 years.

Abadi has also assigned other bureau leaders to security and political positions. In July, Abadi instructed Maj. Gen. Jalil Jabbar al-Rubaie to lead the Baghdad operations, replacing Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir al-Shammari. Rubaie served as the head of intelligence in the counterterrorism bureau.

After protesters stormed Baghdad's Green Zone in April, Abadi removed Lt. Gen. Mohammed Rida from duty and appointed Maj. Gen. Karim Abboud al-Tamimi in his place to head Green Zone security. Tamimi had been a leader in the counterterrorism bureau, serving in different positions there since 2007.

This indicates that officers within the counterterrorism bureau are gradually taking up top security and military positions in the state, especially following the bureau’s achievements against IS.

The most recent battles in eastern Mosul produced a field leadership that was accepted by both Shiite and Sunni Muslims. Pictures of counterterrorism bureau leaders were everywhere on social media. They have major support from the people, who recognize that these leaders are an extension of the former Iraqi army, which was disbanded in 2003.

At the same time, some members of the PMU see these leaders as potential competitors.

“I fear the ambitions of these leaders, amid the military support and flow of weapons from the United States," a PMU leader who spoke on condition of anonymity told Al-Monitor.

After the liberation of eastern Mosul, the bureau, army brigades, the Special Weapons and Tactics team, and the federal and local police were charged with preserving security there, according to Lt. Gen. Abdullah Yarallah, a commander of one of the liberation operations.

Concerning the liberation of western Mosul, the counterterrorism bureau is in charge of securing the floating bridges from one side of the Tigris River to the other. The bureau, alongside its two brigades, is responsible for breaking IS defense lines along the Tigris, which runs through the city.

In an exclusive statement to Al-Monitor, one of the prominent leaders in the bureau, Maj. Gen. Abdul Wahab al-Saidi, said bureau units neutralized large numbers of IS fighters and leaders in the battles for eastern Mosul, dealing a severe blow to IS morale. He expects the operation to retake western Mosul to be easier, given that IS has been hit hard already and given that the western part of Mosul is smaller.

The counterterrorism bureau also has strong support from parliament. In August, parliament passed a bill defining the bureau as being part of the security and intelligence apparatuses and a legal entity linked to the general commander of the armed forces.

The law gave the bureau broad powers, including the ability to establish a department for intelligence, military and combat pilot training. The bureau is also allowed to arrest terror suspects and can request telephone taps, monitor social networking sites and seek to have bank accounts frozen.

“This bill has allowed the bureau to be completely independent from the Ministry of Defense, after having been associated with it administratively and in terms of salaries and appointments. This bill boosted the morale of the bureau’s fighters, as now they feel their rights are preserved and protected," Saidi said.

Also, the 2017 budget allows for a $2.5 billion contract with a Chinese company for arms and ammunition supplies to the ministries of Interior and Defense, the PMU and the counterterrorism bureau.

The bureau also receives direct support and training from the United States and other coalition members. A TV report on France 24 in November showed French special forces officers accompanying the counterterrorism units for advisory and training purposes in operations to liberate Mosul.

not only at the military level, but also at the political and security levels. post-IS era All of this mounting influence indicates that the counterterrorism bureau will assume a major role in the

52,000 Additional Iraqi Troops Deployed in Mosul

A total of 60,000 soldiers are taking part in the operation

52,000 Additional Iraqi Troops Deployed in Mosul

MOSUL — An additional 52,000 troops have joined the 10,000 in the battle to reclaim western Mosul from Islamic State (IS) militants.

"A total of 60,000 soldiers are taking part in the operation", Army Brigadier-General Mohsen al-Quraishi said.

The Iraqi federal police, 9th brigade of the Iraqi Army and the Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria, backed by aerial support from the US-led international coalition, along with foreign troops that will provide assistance and support on ground, will be the forces that will lead this battle for the western half of the city.

Prime Minister of Iraq Haidar al-Abadi announced the launch of the offensive in western Mosul on Sunday.

The fight in the western half is expected to be more intense than it was in eastern Mosul because of the presence of the IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and the lack of escape routes for the militants present there.

The operation to retake Mosul began on October 17 of last year. Eastern half of the city was officially liberated on January 24. However, IS militants are still present there and there have been incidents involving IS suicide bombers which resulted in deaths of civilians in the eastern half following the announced liberation.

SDF Close in on IS in Deir Al-Zour, Northern Syria

ISTANBUL  The US-backed Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which are leading the military operation against the Islamic State (IS) in Raqqa, Syria have reached into the Deir al-Zour province.

Deir al-Zor is around 140 kilometers away from Raqqa.

"Military operations of the SDF are now taking place within the provincial boundaries of Deir al-Zour, from the north - so, via southern Hasaka," a Kurdish military source told Reuters on Tuesday.

IS militants control most of the Deir al-Zour province. However, there are some territories in the province which are controlled by the Syrian government forces.

From these government held areas, the Syrian army backed by Russia have been fending off IS attacks on Deir al-Zour city.

Turkish troops are also in Syria, fighting the IS in Al-Bab, which is in northern Syria 30 km south of the Turkish border.
