Thousands More Iraqi Troops Join Mosul Assault after Training

Thousands More Iraqi Troops Join Mosul Assault after Training

ERBILApproximately 5,000 Iraqi Security Forces have completed their coalition training and will proceed to assist as hold forces in eastern Mosul, thereafter taking part in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) in western Mosul, reported the US Department of Defense on Friday.

Their graduation ceremonies took place in Taji, Besmaya, Erbil and Al Asad Air Base.

Close to 2,000 policemen have completed their training in just Taji and Besmaya.

“Task Group Taji IV is proud to see them develop into an effective security force, ready to take the fight to ISIS,” said Australian Col. Richard Vagg, task group commander, using another acronym for the IS.

Task Group Taji is a combined Australian-New Zealand military training force, with four training locations in Iraq. The combined Task Group consists of around 300 Australian Defense Force personnel and about 110 New Zealand Defense Force personnel.

"The police trainees are determined to defend their country against ISIS,” Vagg said.

“They’re young and determined, -  many of them come from Mosul where they’ve lost family members to ISIS’s campaign of terror,” he added.

In Besmaya, Spanish coalition members trained the Iraqi police forces.

At Al Asad Air Base, British, Latvian, Estonian and American forces trained about 300 Iraqi soldiers on proper clearing and patrol techniques.

After more than three months since the operation to free Mosul from IS militants began, eastern Mosul was proclaimed free on January 24th.

Currently, Iraqi forces are awaiting orders to move on to the western part of the city.

Erbil Hospitals Short On Medical Supplies Due to Mosul Operation

28,000 individuals from military and civilians have received treatment in Erbil

18 February 2017

Erbil Hospitals Short On Medical Supplies Due to Mosul Operation

ERBIL— General Health Directorate of Erbil province announced on Thursday that about 28,000 people injured or affected by the operation of Mosul have been treated in the capital of the Kurdistan Region, Erbil, since the start of the assault on the Islamic State (IS) in the city.

The Erbil General Health Directorate released a statement earlier this week saying that about 28,000 people have received medical help since the start of the operation for liberating the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, 14,000 of which have been directly wounded during the military clashes between the pro-government joint forces and the IS terrorist group, Kurdistan24 reported on Saturday.

According to the official report, the rest of the people have been taken into hospital in Erbil due to various diseases spread in Mosul, as a result of a serious lack of medical services and health care.

The Directorate continued by stating that Mosul offensive has a direct impact on Erbil hospitals, as the large number of patients does not match the medical aid received by the hospitals. Moreover, it has led to a significant shortage in medical supplies and drugs, as drugs and medical need which were set to last eight months have been entirely used in only two months time.

In addition, the Directorate said that despite the help provided by the Iraqi government to the Kurdistan Region, the situation continues to remain unchanged, and they have had to request from Baghdad to address the issue, unfortunately with no response up to date.

The Kurdistan Region has accepted more than 1.8 million refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) since 2014, when IS first took over a large part of the territory of Iraq. The number is expected to increase even more in the upcoming weeks as the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) are starting their offensive against the IS militants in western Mosul, which remains under IS-control with hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in the area.

ISIS headquarter in Mosul destroyed by coalition forces

ISIS headquarter destroyed
ISIS headquarter destroyed

Us-led international coalition announced on Saturday that ISIS headquarter in Mosul has been destroyed.

The coalition war planes targeted a building affiliated to the main medical complex in western Mosul which is suspected to be ISIS headquarter in the city.

Earlier on Jan 24,2017,Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi called on Iraqi security forces to quickly launch operation to liberate the right bank of Mosul city.

He announced that Iraqi forces will push ahead to keep control over left bank of Mosul city .

The battle for Mosul is the biggest ground operation in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion. A victory by the 100,000-strong US-backed pro-government force would probably spell the end for ISIS self-styled caliphate that has ruled over millions of people in Iraq and Syria since 2014.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault described as “very important historic movement” Mosul liberation from the grip of ISIS or Daesh.

A statement released by Abadi’s office on Saturday said Abadi received a message from French President Francois Hollande during his meeting at his residence in Munich with the French top diplomat.

The French minister asserted that France would extend all possible support to the Iraqi forces in its war against Daesh, greeting the Iraqi forces over achieving a victory in liberating the left bank of Mosul as well as preparations to free the right bank of the city.

The French minister  also voiced his country’s readiness to boost cooperation with Iraq in all fields.

Abadi, for his part, conveyed his greetings to the French president over his support to the Iraqi people and his resolve to develop cooperation relations between the two friendly countries.

WFP: Families in western Mosul face critical shortage of food, water

February 18 2017 10:07 PM
World Food Programe
World Food Programe

With military operations to retake western Mosul beginning, humanitarian organizations are warning that tens of thousands of families are at extreme risk.

Recent surveys with key informants confirm that food and fuel supplies are dwindling, markets and shops have closed, running water is scarce and electricity in many neighborhoods is either intermittent or cut off.

“The situation is distressing. People, right now, are in trouble. We are hearing reports of parents struggling to feed their children and to heat their homes,” said Lise Grande, Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq. “The battle hasn’t started but already there is a humanitarian crisis.”

The UN estimates that between 750,000 and 800,000 civilians are resident in the western section of the city. Few, if any commercial supplies have reached Mosul during the past three months after the main road to Syria was cut-off.

Informants report that nearly half of all food shops have closed. Bakeries throughout the area have run out of fuel and many can no longer afford to purchase costly flour. Prices of kerosene and cooking gas have skyrocketed and many of the most destitute families are burning wood, furniture, plastic or garbage for cooking and heating.

“Children and their families are starting to face critical shortages of safe drinking water,” said Peter Hawkins, UNICEF Representative in Iraq. “Three out of five people now depend on untreated water from wells for cooking and drinking as water systems and treatment plants have been damaged by fighting or run out of chlorine.”

“Food prices in western Mosul are almost double than in eastern Mosul,” said Sally Haydock, Representative of the World Food Programme in Iraq. “We are extremely concerned that many families do not have enough to eat in western Mosul.”

Humanitarian agencies are rushing to prepare for the humanitarian impact of the military campaign. Emergency sites are being constructed south of the city and stocks of life-saving supplies are being pre-positioned for the 250,000 – 400,000 civilians who may flee.

“We don’t know what will happen during the military campaign but we have to be ready for all scenarios. Tens of thousands of people may flee or be forced to leave the city. Hundreds of thousands of civilians might be trapped—maybe for weeks, maybe for months,” said Ms. Grande. “Protecting civilians is the highest priority in a situation like this—nothing is more important.”

IMIS leader vows to get revenge on Mosul residents

A leading figure within the ranks of Iran Militia in Iraq and Syria (IMIS) terrorist group said the battle to liberate Mosul from ISIS is 'Christians' battle with Yazid grandchildren'.

A video emerged on social media showed Ryan Salem Al-Keldani, member of IMIS's Bablyon militia, saying that Mosul battle is the Christians' battle with the grandchildren of Yazid, noting that Christians were insistent on settling the score in Nineveh.

History will repeat itself, he stated.

On its part, Chaldean Patriarchate strongly denounced the remarks made by Al-Keldani, describing them as 'irrational'.

We declare it for all that's Al-Keldani words have nothing to do with the teachings of Christ, messenger of peace, love and forgiveness, the Patriarchate said in a statement.

He does not represent Christians. And he is not a reference for them, the statement added.

ISIS commanders started to leave Raqqah, Pentagon says

Leaders of the terror group of ISIS started to leave the Syrian city of Raqqah, which is the capital of their self-proclaimed caliphate, after the advances made by Syrian Democratic Forces, Pentagon said.

The Syrian Democratic Forces are backed by the anti-ISIS US-led coalition.

Jeff Davis, a spokesman for the US Department of Defense, said:"We have started seeing big numbers of ISIS leaders and cadres leaving Raqqah."

They have taken into account that their end is looming in Raqqah, Davis added, indicating that the terror group's retreat is very 'orderly and well-coordinated'.

Raqqah is second main target for the anti-ISIS US-led  coalition after Iraq's Mosul.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, an alliance between Arab and Kurdish fighters, initiated an offensive on November 6 aiming to isolate the city through severing all roads linking it to outside world.

Western Kirkuk Axis Peshmerga commander Kamal Kirkuki on Saturday announced that seven ISIS operatives were killed in air an raid west of Kirkuk.

ISIS's snipers commander has been among the terrorists killed in the air attack.

The Peshmerga forces received intelligence information that ISIS terrorists are advancing on Al-Mansuria village to attack them, he said in a statement.

Upon receiving the information, the US-led coalition jets conducted air raids on the terror group's gatherings in the area, fully destroying them, he added.

Two vehicles were also destroyed in the bombardment, he explained, adding that ISIS terrorists from now and then launch attacks on Peshmerga forces.

One of the ISIS positions destroyed by the coalition jets had long been used for sniping, thus the commander of the group's snipers has been killed in the raid, Kirkuki stated.

Pentagon mulls sending more ground troops to Iraq

US Secretary of Defense
US Secretary of Defense

US Secretary of Defense Jim Mathis on Saturday said he is considering sending more US ground troops to Iraq to support the military campaign against the terrorist organization of ISIS.

In his first meeting at Nato headquarters in Brussels held to discuss efforts to fight ISIS, Mathis added that he wants to confer with allies before speaking with President Trump on sending more ground troops to Iraq and Syria to accelerate anti-ISIS operations.

The US secretary of defense, according to reporters, did not rule out the possibility to send in more troops to the region, saying he will discuss the matter with the allies before floating the idea with President Trump.

He yet noted that all Nato members he met in Brussels are united in the battle against terrorism.

The minister also revealed that the consultation with the Middle Eastern allies will start following Munich security conference.
