Animals in Mosul Zoo Not Spared from Battle

Only two animals survived in Mosul zoo

14 February 2017

Animals in Mosul Zoo Not Spared from Battle
MOSUL — Since the start of the operation to liberate Mosul from the Islamic State (IS) militants, the animals in the Mosul Zoo have suffered neglect and malnourishment due to the battles so much so that only two animals managed to survive, Reuters reported.

Currently, only an emaciated lion and a bear make up the zoo's collection.

Although the animals are now being taken care of by the Kurdistan Organization for Animal Rights Protection and visitors come to feed the animals as well, the overall state of the zoo and the enclosures containing the animals are in dire need of cleaning, renovation and upgrading.

The zoo was used by IS militants as a staging ground for attacks on Iraqi troops. In the approximately four months that the zoo has been used intensely by IS militants, it was a target for anti-IS coalition.

Moreover, while most of the animals were killed by shrapnel, others died due to starvation resulting from lack of food and lack of zoo personnel who for fear of getting in the battle zone did not venture into the zoo.

Reportedly, a couple bears were under such extreme food deprivation that they consumed their own cubs.

Due to lack of proper personnel, the animals that remain are long overdue for their veterinarian check-ups.

One of the current animal keepers named Huther, 25 said that "the animals here have had a tough time."

"They have been frightened like us, hurt like us, and killed like us. We used to clean the enclosures each day and a vet visited every week but, when the war started, we couldn't reach them, first because of Daesh and then because we were scared of the fighting, and every day there were bombs, mortars and drones," he added using the Arabic acronym for the IS.

Abu Umar, manager of the Mumtaz al-Nour Park which contains the Mosul Zoo within it is asking for assistance.

"We really need vets and maybe animal charities to come and help these two animals," Umar said.

"But we also urgently need someone to help us deal with all these unexploded missiles because children still play in the park. We would welcome any help here," he added.

So very sad. Animals in zoo's depend on people to survive. These Daesh Cockroaches care for nothing. :(

Sad really

ERBIL — A mass grave containing Christian civilians exists in West Mosul which is yet under the Islamic State (IS) control, and the fate of 100 Christians from Mosul remains unknown.

Ma'an Shlimon, the director of the Christian affairs in Duhok province told BasNews that 13 Christians, including 10 women, have so far been freed from the grip of IS.

Shlomo Organization for documenting the crimes committed against Christians in Iraq said the IS militants abducted 150 Christians from Batnaya, Qaraqosh and Tal Kef areas whose fate is still unclear.

Khals Aichoa Barbar, the head of the organization, told BasNews that so far only two Christians have been found dead who were shot by the IS militants in Qaraqosh. However no mass graves of Christians have been discovered in Nineveh Plains, he said.

A number of Christians have been executed in Baghdad School on the right coast of Mosul who have been buried in a mass grave inside the school, "but we have no knowledge of the number of victims in the grave," Barbar said.

"We are waiting for the liberation of the right coast of the city to document the grave," he said.

The official added that around 4,000 Christians from Nineveh Plains were displaced to Duhok after the extremist organization took over Mosul back in 2014.

The hashtag #AfterDaesh on Twitter is used by many locals in the recently liberated from the Islamic State (IS) areas in Syria and Iraq, to show how life is slowly returning to normal with thousand of people returning back to their homes.

"As Daesh continues to surrender land in Syria and Iraq, there are increasingly more hopeful scenes of return, resilience, and reconstruction in the terrorist group’s former strongholds," the Sawab spokesperson said.

IS Releases Video of Yezidi Children Carrying Out Suicide Attacks
ERBIL — A video featuring two Yezidi children preparing for and completing suicide missions for the Islamic State (IS) was released on Tuesday.

Two Yezidi boys who have been identified by their family were Amjad and Asaad-Alyas Mahjo, siblings ages 11 and 12.

A family member told The Foreign Desk that the boys were abducted in 2014, when the IS militants attacked the Yezidi-majority town of Sinjar. As a result, about 5,000 Yazidi men were killed, including the boys' father. Thousands of Yezidi women and children were captured and enslaved.

In the video recording the boys talk about their "ignorant" past as Yezidis, their newfound religion and their choice in carrying out suicide attacks for the IS.

The boys later entered separate explosive-laden automobiles and drove to the target locations.

Thereafter, IS drones follow the cars until both cars detonate and the two siblings died.

Following their abduction in Sinjar district in 2014, the Yezidi children have been brainwashed into carrying out suicide attacks and trained in military activities.
