Russian president ME envoy arrives in Baghdad

Russian President's Special Envoy to the Middle East Michael Bogdanov arrived in Baghdad on Sunday.

The Russian president's envoy is expected to hold talks with Iraqi officials on the latest security and military developments in Iraq as well as the war waged by the Iraqi army against the terrorist group of ISIS or Daesh.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced earlier in the day the launch of a military offensive to recapture the right bank of Mosul from ISIS which has been controlling the city since June 2014.

Putin envoy carries message to Abadi

Abadi meets Putin envoy

Mikhail Bogdanov, envoy of Russia's president Vladimir Putin, handed over a message to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi, a statement released by Abadi's office said.

Iraq is keen to boost ties with Russia to serve the common interests of the two peoples, the statement added.

"Iraq's war on terrorism entered its last phase. And if it weren't for the resilience of the Iraqis, terrorists would spill over into the rest of the region," Abadi further explained.
