Guyana new 50-dollar commemorative note (B119) confirmed

According to an article in Guyana Chronicle dated 12 May 2016, the Bank of Guyana is commemorating the nation's 50 years of independence by issuing a new 50-dollar banknote as well as new 2,000- and 5,000-dollar coins struck by the Mint of Norway.

Thailand new 70-baht commemorative note confirmed

According to a press release dated 30 May 2016, on 9 June 2016, the Bank of Thailand will introduce a 70-baht note to commemorate the 70th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's accession to the throne. 20 million notes are being sold with a leaflet as numismatic products for 100 baht. With a vertical orientation, the note measures 89 x 162 mm. The front of the banknote depicts King Bhumibol Adulyadej in the uniform of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, the Royal House of Chakra gown with the Most Illustrious Order of the Royal House of Chakri, and the Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao breast chain. The back of the note depicts the King in full regalia holding the Sword of Victory, standing in front of the Phuttan Kanchanasinghat Throne inside the Paisan Taksin Hall.

South Korea 2018 Winter Olympics commemorative note reported

According to an article on Yonhap News Agency dated 29 May 2016, the Bank of Korea plans to issue the country's first legal tender commemorative banknote for the Winter Olympics set to take place in PyeongChang 9 - 25 February 2018. The Bank of Korea also plans to start selling sets of commemorative coins in November, composed of two gold, eight silver and one bronze.

Poland new 20-zlotych commemorative (BNP820) confirmed introduced on 12.04.2016

According to the Narodowy Bank Pokski's prospectus for 2016, in April 2016 the bank planned to introduce 30,000 pieces of a 20-zlotych banknote commemorating the 1,050th anniversary of the “Baptism of Poland,” when King Miezko I and the majority of his court were baptized in 966 AD.

The bank has more recently posted a notice on its site indicating that up to 35,000 pieces of the note will be introduced on 12 April 2016.

Vietnam to introduce 100-dong commemorative note (BNP302) on 06.05.2016

On 6 May 2016, the State Bank of Vietnam introduced this 100-đong note to commemorate the 65th anniversary of national banking in Vietnam. Not intended for circulation, individual notes were sold for VND20,000 each, or VND25,000 with a commemorative cover.

Russia new 100-ruble Crimea commemorative note (B832) confirmed

On 23 December 2015, the Bank of Russia began issuing 20 million 100-ruble notes commemorating the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014. The new notes feature symbols of the city of Sevastopol on front and Crimea on back.

Scotland's Bank of Scotland new 5-pound polymer commemorative note confirmed

According to a press release dated 8 October 2015, the Bank of Scotland has unveiled the limited edition commemorative 5-pound banknote to be auctioned in aid of BBC Children in Need in November. The notes feature a picture of the charity’s Pudsey bear in a design produced by 13-year old Kayla Robson who won the Bank of Scotland’s competition to design a banknote. Just 50 of these notes have been produced by De La Rue and the use of the Safeguard substrate has allowed novel use of secure windows in the image of the Bank’s headquarters The Mound in Edinburgh.

The serial numbers on the note will also be unique with the first 40 notes using the serial code PUDSEY01 – PUDSEY40. The remaining 10 banknotes will be available for personalized serial numbers such as initials and date of birth. After the one-off charity auction, most of the rest of the notes will be auctioned by Spinks auction house in December 2015.

Oman new 1-rial commemorative note (B236) confirmed

According to a press release dated 18 November 2015, on the occasion of the 45th National Day 2015, the Central Bank of Omanannounced the introduction of a new commemorative 1-rial banknote.

There are unconfirmed reports that the bank immediately withdrew the note because of an error in the Hijri year on the front of the note below the signature. It should be ١٤٣٧ (1437) but appears as ١٤٢٧ (1427). The date is correct on the back as 1437 H / 2015 G.

Canada new 20-dollar commemorative polymer note (B376) confirmed issued 09.09.2015

According to a press release dated 9 September 2015, the Bank of Canada reportedly introduced a 20-dollar polymer banknote (B376) to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II on becoming the longest-reigning sovereign in Canada’s modern era. 

The commemorative bank note is a variation of the existing $20 polymer bank note (B373) that already features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The new note is identical to the current $20 note, with one distinct difference: its large window contains a range of special design elements, including a portrait of Her Majesty wearing a crown (tiara) for the first time on a Canadian bank note. The portrait is based on a 1951 image by renowned Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh – the same photograph that inspired the portrait engraving of the Queen, without the crown, for the 1954 Canadian Landscape series of bank notes and the 1967 commemorative note celebrating Confederation. Since her accession to the throne in 1952, an image of Her Majesty has appeared on every series of Canadian bank notes.

The Bank of Canada’s Chief of Currency, Richard Wall, unveiled the commemorative note, together with the Governor General of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston.

“This is a unique milestone in the history of the monarchy in our country, and the Bank of Canada is honoured to mark the occasion in this special way. Over Her Majesty’s reign, the technology behind our bank notes has continually evolved – to the state-of-the-art polymer notes we have today. It is therefore fitting that we are commemorating this historic occasion by using one of the most advanced security features of our current notes – the large holographic window,” said Mr. Wall.

The Bank of Canada will issue 40 million commemorative notes, the first of which will start to be available at financial institutions across Canada tomorrow. They will circulate alongside the existing $20 note, which will continue to be issued and will comprise the vast majority of $20 notes in circulation.

Poland new 20-złoty commemorative note (BNP819) confirmed

To commemorate the 600th anniversary of the birth of Jan Długosz (priest, historian, writer, geographer, and diplomat), the National Bank of Poland will begin selling 30,000 new numismatic products beginning on 24 August 2015. Designed by Andrzej Heidrich, the note features a Quick Recognition Code at lower left front. This code is engraved by laser on the surface of the special cotton-based paper substrate. When scanned with an Internet-enabled mobile device, the code goes to a web site which tells the story of this note.

Singapore new 10- and one 50-dollar commemorative notes (B212 - B217) confirmed

According to a press release dated 18 August 2015, the Monetary Authority of Singapore unveiled a set of six commemorative banknotes celebrating SG50, Singapore’s 50 years of nation-building. The notes comprise a $50 polymer note and five $10 polymer notes.

The note designs drew inspiration from significant milestones and achievements in Singapore’s history, the multiracialism that defines the nation, and the values and aspirations that underpin Singapore’s progress. The front of both the $50 and $10 notes feature the portrait of Mr Yusof Ishak, Singapore’s first President, as in the current Portrait series notes.

The five $10 notes have a common front design and varying back designs depicting the theme ‘Vibrant Nation, Endearing Home’. Each note reflects a value or aspiration that defines this theme:

The $50 note highlights Singapore’s history, transformation and future. It shows Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first Prime Minister, shouting “Merdeka!” – the rallying cry of our independence struggle. The note makes distinctive use of the color gold, reflecting Singapore’s Golden Jubilee.

Both the $50 and $10 notes have security features that are the first of their kind in the world to be used on a currency note. The security stripe on the $50 note has a unique see-through feature with “image movement effects” that create depth to the image of Mr Lee Kuan Yew. The SG50 logo has “color-switching effects”, with the year flipping from ‘1965’ to ‘2015’. The $10 notes have a security stripe with a “switching effect” which features the Singapore Coat of Arms, SG50 logo and the years ‘1965’ and ‘2015’.

The SG50 commemorative notes were designed by four local artists and designers, namely Mr Chua Mia Tee, Mr Eng Siak Loy, Mr Weng Ziyan and Mr Fabian Lim. 

The public can exchange the SG50 commemorative notes at face value at branches of nine major retail banks from 20 August 2015 onwards.

The public is advised not to rush to obtain the notes. There will be enough notes for Singaporeans. “There will be enough SG50 notes available for exchange. A total of 20 million pieces of the $50 notes and 75 million pieces of $10 notes - 15 million pieces of each design - are being printed. There is no need to rush.”, said Dr Andrew Khoo, Deputy Managing Director (Corporate Development).

Singaporeans will be given priority to exchange the notes from 20 August 2015 to 30 September 2015. During this period, Singaporeans have to present their National Registration Identification Card (NRIC) at the bank in person as proof of citizenship. From 1 October 2015 onwards, the SG50 notes will be made available to non-Singaporeans as well. 

To ensure that everyone has an opportunity to exchange the SG50 commemorative notes, there will be a quota of five sets of notes (each set comprising a $50 note and five $10 notes) per transaction per individual. The public can choose to exchange any number or combination of notes subject to a maximum of five notes per design. 

Members of the public can also obtain specially-designed folders to keep the commemorative notes. They can obtain one complimentary folder when they exchange for any of the commemorative currency notes. There is no minimum amount they need to exchange to obtain the folder. An additional folder will be given if two full sets of notes (each set comprising a $50 note and five $10 notes) or more are exchanged. The public can only obtain up to a maximum of two folders per transaction. The folders will be available at the banks on a first-come-first-served basis and while stocks last. The nine major retail banks have sponsored 2.8 million of these specially designed folders.

An exclusive collection of seven limited edition SG50 numismatic currency sets are available for sale. The numismatic sets are sold by Noel Gifts International Ltd (Noel Gifts). Gibraltar new 100-pound polymer commemorative note to be issued in 2016

According to a transcript of Gibraltar's Chief Minister Fabian Picardo speech, a new 100-pound banknote will be put into circulation in the first half of 2016. The note will be dated 21 August 2015, the centenary of the birth of Sir Joshua Hassan. Nicknamed "Salvador" (Saviour), Sir Joshua was chief minister for a total of 22 years and is credited as being the most important architect of Gibraltar’s move towards self-determination. The design of this, the first 100-pound note ever to be printed on polymer substrate, carries a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a portrait of Sir Joshua on the other.

Maldives new 5,000-rufiyaa commemorative polymer note (B222) confirmed

According to the Maldives Monetary Authority press release dated 26 July 2015, the MMA has introduced a 5,000-rufiyaa note (US$330) commemorating the 50th anniversary of independence. This is the first denomination in a new family of seven banknotes printed on DLR’s Safeguard polymer substrate. The other circulating denominations—10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 rufiyaa—will follow from October 2015 onwards (the existing 5-rufiyaa note will be replaced by a coin).

On 29 June 2015, the National Reserve Bank of Tonga introduced an upgraded family of six banknotes all printed by De La Rue. The new notes feature the portrait of the new king, Tupou VI. The notes will be issued in the coming months to commemorate the king's coronation to be held 4 July 2015. Sets with matched serial numbers will be issued in a folder as a numismatic product.

According to a press release, the Bank of Papua New Guinea has issued a new 20-kina note to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the country with a special overprint of the 40th Anniversary of Papua New Guinea Independence and the National Bird of Paradise image above the Parliament House. They are physically smaller (135 x 70 mm) than the preceding issues, but otherwise the designs remain unchanged except for the addition of an Optical Variable Image (OVI) at upper right front that exhibits three transitional colors when the notes are tilted.

Hong Kong new 150-dollar commemorative numismatic product confirmed

According to a post on its web site, HSBC announced a 150-dollar banknote to commemorate its 150th anniversary in Hong Kong. This numismatic product is available as a single note in a folder (HKD380), a 3-in-1 uncut set in folder (HKD1,380), and a 35-in-1 uncut set (HKD23,880). Sets may be ordered by anyone aged 18 or above with a valid Hong Kong Identity Card or passport (Hong Kong SAR or another country's) number, and a valid Hong Kong correspondence address and phone number. The deadline for applying to buy notes was 21 March 2015, and they were available for pick-up beginning 9 June 2015.

Papua New Guinea new 10- and 20-kina polymer commemorative notes reported issued 21.05.2015

According to a press release dated 21 May 2015, the Bank of Papua New Guinea will issue new 10- and 20-kina commemorative banknotes, both resized as part of the reform process undertaken by the bank to standardize the size of Papua New Guinea banknotes. The 10-kina banknote incorporates a special overprint of the XV Pacific Games logo in yellow, red, green, black and blue in color located above the Parliament House, whereas the 20-kina note incorporates a special overprint of the 40th Anniversary of Papua New Guinea Independence and the National Bird of Paradise image above the Parliament House. A 50-toea coin will also be issued 21 May 2015 to commemorate the Pacific Games.

Canada new 20-dollar QEII polymer commemorative to be introduced in 2015

According to a press release, "On 9 September 2015, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest-reigning sovereign in Canadian history, exceeding the reign of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.

To mark this historic reign, the Bank of Canada will issue a special commemorative bank note in 2015. The note will be a variation of the existing $20 polymer bank note (BOC B73) that already features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The variation will incorporate a special mention of Her Majesty’s reign.

This commemorative note will be publicly unveiled and issued this fall. It will have the same level of security as all other notes in the Polymer series. More information will be available at that time."

Maldives new note family to be issued beginning July 2015

According to a De La Rue press release dated 12 May 2015, the Maldives Monetary Authority will introduce a new family of seven banknotes printed on DLR’s Safeguard polymer substrate. The first denomination—a commemorative 5,000-rufiyaa note—will be launched at the end of July 2015. The other circulating denominations—10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 rufiyaa—will follow from October 2015 onwards (the existing 5-rufiyaa note will be replaced by a coin). The Maldives Monetary Authority held a design competition and selected local artist Abdullah Nashaath to ensure that the new family, called Randhihafaheh, has an authentically Maldivian look.

Trans-Dniester new 1- and 10-ruble commemorative notes confirmed

According to a Russian-language press release, on 28 April 2015, the Trans-Dniester Republican Bank introduced 1- and 10-ruble banknotes commemorating the 70th anniversary of victory in World War II. These commemorative notes are like the existing regular issues (TDRB B9 and B11), but have an overprint at lower right front with the Russian text 70 ЛЕТ ВЕЛИКОЙ ПОБЕДЫ (70 Years of Great Victory) above Saint George’s Ribbon, the most respected symbol of military valour in Russia, followed by 1945-2015 below. 7,070 pieces of each denomination were issued into circulation. 2,000 sets of the notes were sold in folders as numismatic products.

According to an article in The Straits Times dated 14 April 2015, Singapore will issue a new commemorative 50-dollar polymer banknote featuring a transparent panel showing the late Lee Kuan Yew (the first Prime Minister of Singapore) with fist raised, leading the crowd with the rallying cry of "Merdeka!" which means "freedom" in Malay.

Scotland's Clydesdale Bank new 5-pound polymer commemorative confirmed

According to a post on BBC.com dated 23 March 2015, the Clydesdale Bank has begun issuing the first of two million 5-pound polymer banknotes to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Forth Bridge. On 12 November 2014, Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan unveiled a new 100-naira banknote to commemorate Nigeria's 100 years of existence. According to an article on allAfrica, the note will be introduced on 19 December 2014.

The note features Crane's Motion windowed security thread with the Nigerian flag and 100 moving when the note is tilted, as well as a SPARK patch that changes color from green to purple when tilted.

Gambia new 20-dalasi commemorative polymer note to be introduced at end of 2014

According to a De La Rue press release dated 18 November 2014, the Central Bank of The Gambia will introduce a 20-dalasi banknote before the end of 2014 to commemorate 20 years in office for President Yahya Jammeh. This note was designed and printed by De La Rue on Safeguard polymer substrate.

This new note is based on the existing paper 25-dalasi note (CBG B24), but is green rather than blue, and features a portrait of the president. The clear window in the polymer note will have an image of a crocodile which currently appears in the watermark of the paper note.

Ruth Euling, Sales Director for De La Rue Currency stated “We are proud to have worked with The Central Bank of The Gambia since its inception and are delighted that they have joined the growing number of banks who have chosen Safeguard for their banknotes. The Gambia is the second country in Africa to issue notes on the Safeguard substrate with a third African country due to issue later this year.”

Nigeria new 100-naira commemorative unveiled

On 12 November 2014, Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan unveiled a new 100-naira banknote to commemorate Nigeria's 100 years of existence. Although the new note will have the same portrait of Chief Obafemi Awolowo on front as the existing note of the same denomination (CBN B26), it will have a new color scheme and increased security features, including "One Nigeria, Great Promise" in microprinting. On the back it will feature traditional dancers as well as a quickresponse code (QRC) which when scanned leads users to a website about Nigeria's history. Both notes will circulate in parallel.

Zambia new 50-kwacha commemorative note confirmed

According to a Zambia Daily Mail article dated 23 October 2014, the Bank of Zambia has unveiled a new 50-kwacha note commemorating the 50th anniversary of independence (24 October 1964). The commemorative note depicts the portraits of the five heads of state—founding President Kenneth Kaunda, former presidents Frederick Chiluba, Levy Mwanawasa and Rupiah Banda, and the incumbent President Michael Sata—and has “50th Independence Anniversary” wording.

The new note is legal tender and bears the same security features as the current note of the same denomination, and the two will circulate in parallel.

Kyrgyzstan new 100- and 200-som commemoratives confirmed

On 20 October 2014, the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic began issuing 3,000 pieces each of 100- and 200-som banknotes to commemorate the 150th birthday of Toktogul Satylganov (25.10.1864) and the 100th birthday of Alykul Osmonov (21.03.1915), respectively. These legal tender commemorative notes are like the preceding regular issues, but with offset overprints on the watermark areas at right front. On the 100-som note, there is a golden profile of Satylganov framed with the national ornament and bluish commemorative inscription (“Toktogul is 150 years old”). Malawi new 1,000-kwacha commemorative note confirmed

According to a press release, on 6 July 2014 the Reserve Bank of Malawi introduced a limited edition 1,000-kwacha note to commemorate the country's 50 years of independence. This note will circulate in parallel with the existing note of this denomination (RBM B55). The special commemorative banknote has the words “50 Years of Independence” printed at lower right front, four raised dots at lower left front, as well as slightly revised denomination engravings.

Zambia new commemorative note planned for October 2014

According to an article on LusakaTimes dated 8 August 2014, the Bank of Zambia will honor all heads of state—President Sata, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, late Dr Frederick Chiluba, late Dr Levy Mwanawasa, and Mr Rupiah Banda—by incorporating their portraits on a commemorative banknote to be issued in October this year, as part of the golden jubilee celebrations to be held on 24 October 2014. 

The bank also launched a book titled, “50 years of Central Banking,” with Dr Gondwe urging interested parties to take keen interest and obtain the book or purchase the coin from BoZ offices in Ndola and Lusaka.

Scotland's Royal Bank of Scotland new 5-pound Ryder Cup commemorative Hybrid note confirmed

According to a BBC article dated 15 June 2014, the Royal Bank of Scotland has unveiled the design of a new 5-pound note commemorating the Ryder Cup. The notes will be available to ticket-holders of the golf tournament which takes place at Gleneagles in Perthshire from 23 - 28 September 2014. The note is legal tender, though it is being sold as a numismatic product for US$32.

The note is printed by G&D on hybrid substrate with a see-through window in the shape of the Ryder Cup trophy, and is the first to bear the signature of new RBS chief executive Ross McEwan.

Russia may issue Crimea commemorative note in 2014

According to an article in Pravda dated 2 July 2014, by the end of the year the Central Bank of the Russian Federation may issue a banknote commemorating the Crimea. The bank also indicated it had no immediate plans to issue a 10,000-ruble note.

Malawi new note family and commemorative 1,000-kwacha note reported

According to an article on Face of Malawi dated 1 July 2014, the Reserve Bank of Malawi plans to issue a new family of banknotes in August 2014. The new notes will have enhanced blind recognition features, and the color of the 50-kwacha note will change from light blue to light green to better distinguish it from the blue 200-kwacha note. Furthermore, a 1,000-kwacha note will be issued on 6 July 2014 to commemorate Malawi's 50th anniversary of independence. The limited edition commemorative note will circulate in parallel with the existing note of the same denomination (RBM B55).

Scotland's Clydesdale Bank to issue new 5-pound polymer commemorative in 2015

According to a BBC News article dated 22 May 2014, Clydesdale Bank in Scotland intends to issue two million 5-pound polymer notes featuring the Forth Bridge and a portrait of Sir William Arrol, whose company constructed the bridge. The notes will be issued in March 2015 on the 125th anniversary of the bridge.

Argentina new 50-peso Falklands commemorative note reported

According to a BBC article dated 3 April 2014, Argentina "launched" (it's unclear if it was merely unveiled or actually introduced into circulation) a new 50-peso note commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the invasion of the archipelago known as the Falklands to Britian and the Islas Malvinas to Argentina.

Moldova new 200-leu commemorative note confirmed

This note commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Moldovan leu, which was introduced on 29 November 1993. It is like the preceding issue, but with 20 DE ANI at lower center front, and denomination as registration device. The bank packaged 200,000 notes in sleeves and sold them at 15% over face value.

Sri Lanka commemorative 500-rupee note confirmed

According to a press release dated 8 November 2013, on 15 November the Central Bank of Sri Lanka began issuing 5 million 500-rupee notes commemorating the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Sri Lanka from 15 to 17 November 2013. The note is like the preceding issues, but with a purple CHOGM 2013 Sri Lanka logo instead of a butterfly at the lower left front, decorative artwork flanking the electrotype watermark, new date, and serial numbers from T/51 000001- T/55 1000000.

A limited number of commemorative notes with low serial numbers packaged in a folder will be sold at a price of Rs. 800 each at the Economic History Museum, at No. 54 Chatham Street, Colombo 1, and the Central Bank Provincial Offices at Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Matale, Matara, and Trincomalee.

Lebanon new 50,000-livre commemorative note confirmed

This polymer note commemorating 70 years of independence for Lebanon was issued on 22 November 2013 (the anniversary of the end of French colonial rule in 1943), despite the fact that the French-language back spells “independence” as it is written in English, rather than the French “independance.” The Central Bank of Lebanon said it regretted the mistake, which it blamed on the printing company (De La Rue). 50,000 pieces will enter circulation.

Russia new 100-ruble Olympic commemorative confirmed

According to a press release dated 30 October 2013, Bank of Russia has begun issuing 20 million 100-ruble notes commemorating the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi. The new notes are legal tender and will circulate in parallel with existing notes of the same denomination.

According to an article on ChannelOnline, on 4 July 2013 the States of Guernsey began selling 300,000 1-pound notes to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Thomas de la Rue's first commercial venture. This commemorative note is like the preceding normal issue for this denomination, but enhanced by a design featuring Thomas de la Rue on the back and a TD/LR prefix. It is also the first series of 1-pound notes to feature the signature of States Treasurer Bethan Haines. The notes are sold at double face value, plus £8 S&H.

According to an article in NZweek dated 8 May 2013, Cambodia issued a new 100,000-riel (US$25) note to celebrate the 60th birthday of King Norodom Sihamoni on 14 May. This is the largest denomination in the nation. The note depicts the portraits of late King Father Norodom Sihanouk and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath on the front and the pictures of the two monarchs and their current King Norodom Sihamoni on the back.

Singapore overprinted 1997 5-dollar ship note from sheet

In January 2013, a contributor sent scans of two previously unlisted Singapore 5-dollar notes, possibily commemoratives overprinted on B21b (P35) at right front near the watermark. 

The first note has a prefix of B/29 and is overprinted in red with 30 Anniversary and a small logo of the Board of Commissioners of Currency of Singapore (BCCS). It has a wide margin at left.

The second note has a prefix of B/35 and is overprinted in red with the logo of the BCCS.

From all indications, these notes were overprinted to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the BCCS, which would date them to 1997 or later.

According to another contributor, these notes were manually cut from sheets of notes and were not issued into circulation.

Russia 100-ruble Olympic commemorative note reported for October 2013 introduction

According to an article on Sports NDTV dated 22 January 2013, the Bank of Russia has announced that it will start printing 100-ruble (US$3.30) banknotes in March to commemorate the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, 7-23 February 2014.

The new note features a blue color scheme, vertical orientation, and depicts a snowboarder flying over Sochi on the front and the Olympic Stadium and the Firebird on the back.

Ten million notes will be printed, with introduction into circulation in October 2013, 100 days prior to the start of the games. Some notes will be packaged as numismatic products.

Macau residents flock to buy Year of the Snake banknotes

According to an article dated 14 January 2013 in the Macau Buiness Daily, Banco Nacional Ultramarino's servers crashed due to the large number of online applications to buy special banknotes marking the forthcoming lunar Year of the Snake. From 2012 to 2023, BNU and Bank of China are each authorised to issue a maximum of 20 million special notes with a face value of 10 patacas (US$1.25) to mark each lunar year. The limit was imposed at the end of last January in an effort to curb the kind of crazed speculation that took hold after the Year of the Dragon notes were put in circulation in that month. BNU and Bank of China at first intended to issue only 10 million Year of the Dragon notes each, but people formed long queues to get them.

Morocco new 25-dirham commemorative world's first printed on Durasafe substrate

According to a press release dated 18 December 2012, Fortress Paper has announced the launch of the world's first banknote printed on its new Durasafe substrate, an innovative paper-polymer-paper composite substrate produced at its Landqart mill. The new Swiss 50-franc note had been expected to be the first in the world to use Durasafe, but its introduction has been delayed until 2015 at the earliest due to technical difficulties encountered in the note's production.

With the issuance of the new Moroccan 25-dirham (US$3) note in December 2012, Bank al Maghrib, Morocco's central bank, became the first in the world to issue a banknote printed on Durasafe. The front of the banknote features an intaglio vignette and a watermark of King Mohammed VI, and a magenta/green color-shift security thread developed by Fortress Optical Features. The thread, like the watermark, is embedded inside the banknote yet visible behind a one-sided Viewsafe polymer window. It also has a fully transparent polymer window embossed with the King's royal crest. The back of the note carries a print vignette commemorating 25 years of banknote printing at the Moroccan State Printing Works, Dar As-Sikkah.

The windows in Durasafe are formed by die cutting each side of the three layer composite substrate separately. One-sided Viewsafe windows give a clear view inside the substrate where the thread and the watermark of King Mohammed VI are protected, but fully visible behind the polymer core. The transparent Thrusafe window is created by die-cutting both the outer paperlayers to reveal only the transparent polymer core.

Chadwick Wasilenkoff, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fortress Paper, commented: "After a decade in development, we are pleased to see the fruits of our labour in the launch of the Moroccan 25 Dirhams. We have designed Durasafe to offer the ideal characteristics of polymer and traditional paper notes to create a new standard for high security banknote substrates. Fortress Paper would like to congratulate the Bank al Maghrib on the launch of their new 25 Dirham banknote and being the first in the world to produce and launch a Durasafe banknote."

Moldova 1-leu commemorative declared a fake

This note supposedly commemorates the 15th anniversary of the Moldovan leu, which was introduced on 29 November 1993. Apparently the first 150 1-leu notes dated 2006 were embossed in the Czech Republic with a gold medalion at right front containing the bank logo, the words 15 ANI (15 years), and Ştefan cel Mare.

However, the National Bank of Moldova has declared this privately produced numismatic product a fake.

According to a press release dated 8 August 2012, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas introduced a new 50-peso (US$1.20) banknote bearing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) logo during the 45th ASEAN Day celebration at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Main Building in Pasay City on 10 August.

Souvenir copies of the special edition currency were distributed by Secretary del Rosario to the nine Ambassadors of ASEAN, namely: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam during the ASEAN Day celebration.

10 million pieces of the legal tender commemorative notes will be issued into circulation.

Argentina new 100-peso note with Evita's portrait confirmed

According to an article on Latino Fox News dated 23 July 2012, the Banco Central de la República Argentina is preparing to issue 20 million commemorative 100-peso (US$22) note bearing the face of Eva "Evita" Perón to mark the 60th anniversary of her death. The new notes are based on the design of a 5-peso note from 1952 that never went into circulation.

UPDATE: According to this Spanish-language article, one million notes were issued 21 September 2012, the 60th anniversary of Evita's death, though there seems to be some technical printing problem to resolve.

Trinidad and Tobago new 50-dollar regular and commemorative notes confirmed

According to an article in Trinidad Express Newspapers dated 14 June 2012 and an official press release, on 20 June 2012, theCentral Bank of Trinidad and Tobago unveiled a new 50-dollar (US$7.80) note to commemorate the nation's 50th independence anniversary. The notes entered circulation in August 2012.

The press release indicates that only a limited number of notes carry the following red text around the coat of arms at center front: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE 1962-2012. According to my contacts at the bank, both the overprinted and regular $50 notes entered circulation at face value as legal tender (i.e. they are not sold at a premium as numismatic products).

Also of interest is the press release indication, "Each note has a series of raised bars at the top left and right sides. These are to facilitate recognition by the visually impaired and will be introduced on all denominations in due course." It appears collectors can look forward to new varieties of existing designs with intaglio printed bars.

Thailand new 80-baht commemorative notes confirmed

According to a Bank of Thailand press release dated 3 July 2012, an 80-baht (US$2.55) commemorative banknote was issued to celebrate the queen’s 80th birthday anniversary on 12 August 2012. Two million commemorative 80-baht notes were available as of 9 August encased with a hard-paper cover at 120 baht, with profits to be donated to charity. The blue note measures 162 x 80 mm, representing 80 years of age.

According to a Bank of Thailand press release dated 3 July 2012, this 100-baht (US$3.20) commemorative banknote was issued to celebrate His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn’s 5th Cycle Birthday Anniversary on 28 July 2012.


Ten million commemorative 100-baht notes were issued into circulation on 27 July 2012. The front of the note is the same as the current circulating 100-baht note, but the back has a portrait of the prince as well as a scene of His Royal Highness being conferred the title of Crown Prince. Signatures: Kittirat na Ranong and Prasarn Trairatvorakul.

According to a Central Bank of Samoa press release, the bank has issued two commemorative collectible coins and a limited edition 50-tala (US$22) banknote for circulation to mark Samoa’s 50th Independence Day on 1 June 2012. This note is like the preceding issues, but with 50th ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE below the country’s name at upper center on front, darker geometric patterns along the top and bottom edges on both sides, and a new signature combination (Faumuina Tiatia Faaolatane Liuga and Maiava Atalina Ainuu-Enari).

Guernsey new 20-pound Diamond Jubilee commemorative note confirmed

The States of Guernesy have issued a 20-pound (US$31) banknote to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The notes include the prefix QE60, a commemorative laurel wreath, and additional wording. The back remains the same as the preceding regular issue of this denomination. A total of 150,000 of the notes have been issued and will circulate alongside the current £20 note. Uncirculated notes can be purchased through the Guernsey Philatelic Bureau at Envoy House (philatelic@guernseypost.com). The notes have been designed and produced by De La Rue Currency, a company started by Guernseyman Thomas De La Rue in the 19th Century.

Scotland new 10-pound commemorative note confirmed

On 23 May 2012, the Royal Bank of Scotland introduced a new 10-pound (US$16) note commemorating the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The note is dated 6 February, the anniversary of the day of Her Majesty's accession to the throne.

Other features include:

• the official crown emblem of the Diamond Jubilee
• four intaglio portraits of the Queen, showing her at different stages in her life
• an engraving of a window in Holyrood Abbey
• a thistle design, related to the Order of the Thistle
• serial numbers with the prefix TQDJ, standing for The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The note is available in branches in Scotland. Customers outside Scotland can order up to 20 notes for the face value plus 5.90 pounds postage. Two million of the notes will be issued, with initial supplies already in circulation, to celebrate the Queen's 60-year reign. 

Some of the new notes, and other rare RBS banknotes, will be sold at a charity auction later in the year, with the proceeds going to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Charity Trust. Notes with special serial numbers have been donated to the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT), Oxfam, National Museum of Scotland, Scottish Rugby Union, Scottish Golf Union and the STV Children's Appeal.

Philippines new 500-peso commemorative note confirmed

According to a press release dated 4 May 2012, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has issued a new 500-peso (US$12) note of the old style (P196) "with an overprint of the logo of the 45th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank to express solidarity with the ADB’s goal to free Asia and the Pacific from poverty. By ADB’s estimate, about 1.8 billion people in the region are poor and unable to access essential goods, services, and opportunities. The overprint is on the 500-piso banknote that features the late Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. who said: “The Filipino is worth dying for.” A total of 10 million pieces of these 500-peso banknotes were printed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to make it available to the general public through banks across the country."

The States of Jersey have posted a press release with new details regarding the 100-pound (US$157) note commemorating the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, due to be issued 1 June 2012. The note will be legal tender and available for circulation at face value from local banks, in uncirculated condition for “a small administration charge,” and also as a numismatic product in a commemorative presentation pack.

Bangladesh new 60-taka commemorative note confirmed

According to a press release in Bangla, Bangladesh Bank is scheduled to issue a new 60-taka (US$0.70) note on 15 Febuary 2012. The note measures 130 x 60 mm. It commemorates 60 Years of Language Movement 1952-2012, and will be available as a numismatic product packaged in a folder for 200 taka, as well as a circulating note at face value.

According to an article in the Oman Daily Observer dated 12 February 2012, the Central Bank of Oman has introduced new 5- and 10-rial notes (US$13 and $26, respectively) with upgraded security features, which will circulate in parallel with existing notes—B27 (P39) and B28 (P40)—of the same denominations. Based upon the 40th NATIONAL DAY inscription on the back of these notes, it appears they are commemoratives.

Oman new 50-rial commemorative note confirmed

On 9 January 2012, the Central Bank of Oman issued a new 50-rial (US$130) note to commemorate the 40th National Day (18 November), the day Sultan Qaboos bin Said overthrew the restrictive rule of his father in 1970. It is also the sultan’s birthday.

The statement issued by CBO pointed out that this new banknote shall be in circulation as legal tender along with the existing banknotes, which shall continue to remain legal tender, and circulated side by side with these new notes. The common and security features on the front of the upgraded issue are portrait of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said with the facsimile signature of His Majesty on the lower part of the note, watermark of His Majesty portrait on the left side of the note, the national emblem (Khanjar) on top of the note, the Central Bank of Oman in Arabic on top of the note, serial numbers on right and left side of the note, denomination in Arabic on the right and left sides of the note, recognition feature for the blind and vertical security thread in the middle of the note.

The back of the note includes the Central Bank of Oman in English on top side of the note, denomination in English on right and left side of the note and the 40th National Day logo.

The security features on the front of the note represent in intaglio portrait of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, twin step window, holographic element (Main Entrance of the Central Bank of Oman), tactile feature for the blind, color-shift / color fix magnetic windowed security thread, micro lettering, three dimensional mould - made watermark portrait, perfect see through register, electrotype watermark and spark OVMI feature.

Hong Kong Bank of China new 100-dollar commemorative note confirmed

Hong Kong’s Bank of China has announced that from 13-20 February 2012 it will be taking orders for a new 100-dollar (US$13) note to commemorate the bank’s 100th anniversary. Although legal tender, the notes aren’t intended for circulation. 1,100,000 notes will be sold as numismatic products packaged in a folder for HK$150. An additional 100,000 sets of three uncut notes in a folder for HK$600. Finally, 20,000 uncut sheets of 30 notes each will be sold for HK$6,000 each. Profits from the sale of the notes will be donated to charitable organizations in Hong Kong.

Romania new 130-ani commemorative note confirmed

On 26 November 2011, gandul.info posted the above photo. Apparently the Banca Naţională a României created 500 banknote-like numismatic products to commemorate the bank’s 130th anniversary. If you examine the images below, you’ll see these are not banknotes. They aren’t denominated in Romanian leu, and the “serial numbers” on back simply indicate the 130 A (ani = year) span between 1881 and 2011.

Bangladesh new 40-taka commemorative confirmed

According to a press release dated 21 December 2011, Bank Bangladesh introduced a new 40-taka (US$0.50) note to commemorate the “40th Victory Anniversary of Bangladesh,” featuring “Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman” and the National Martyr’s Monument in Savar on front, and six armed men on back. 

Curiously, this note has an electrotype 10 in the watermark, indicating it was likely printed on extra 10-taka banknote paper. However, Bank Bangladesh has not yet issued a new 10-taka note with the same watermark.


A total of 20,000 notes were printed, of which 5,000 were packaged as numismatic products in a folder, some of which had an error in the spelling of the country’s name on front (see above).

Macau new 10-pataca Year of Dragon commemorative notes confirmed

Both the Banco da China and the Banco Nacional Ultramarino have issued new 10-pataca (US$1.25) notes to commemorate the Year of the Dragon. The new notes feature a Chinese paper-cut dragon on the front and the respective bank’s headquarters on the back. Both notes measure 138 x 69 mm, have a flower and electrotype 10 watermark at center, and a 4-mm wide windowed security thread with demetalized 10.

Poland new Marie Curie 20-złoty commemorative confirmed

According to a post on www.numizmatyczny.pl, the National Bank of Poland is issuing a new numismatic product commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in chemistry being awarded to Marie Curie. 60,000 pieces are being sold in a folder at 47 złotych each.

Ukraine new 50-hryvnia commemorative note confirmed

According to a press release dated 5 October 2011, the National Bank of Ukraine has issued a new 50-hryvnia (US$6.25) banknote to commemorate the bank’s 20th anniversary, which are like the notes originally issued in 2004 (Pick 121), but with the phrase “НБУ 20 років” (NBU - 20 years) on the front in a green-to-gold color-shifting SPARK patch, and serial numbers NB 0000001 - 0001000.




While technically legal tender, the first 200 notes were encased in acrylic and packaged in a box containing a silver version of the note; the remaining 800 notes were sold in a commemorative folder.

The Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan has issued a 100-ngultrum (US$2.05) banknote to commemorate the 13 October 2011 royal wedding of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema. According to this BBS article dated 12 October 2011, the notes (and 500-ngultrum coins) are available in Bank of Bhutan, Bhutan Development Bank Limited, and in the BOB counter at the Paro Airport from 13 October until 4 November at a cost of 500 ngultrum and 5,000 ngultrum, respectively.

Taiwan numismatic product expected to sell out quickly

According to an article in The China Post dated 9 September 2011, the Central Bank of China experienced strong demand for the 500,000 sets of “Collector's Version of the Republic of China Founding Centenary NT$100 Banknotes” it sold to the public for NT$500 (US$17.10). Each set contains three NT$100 banknotes.

The Banco Nacional Ultramarino and the Banco da China will issue 10-pataca (US$1.25) banknotes to commemorate the Year of the Dragon. The Banco da China is also planning to issue a 100-pataca (US$12.50) note to commemorate its centennial anniversary.

Jersey to issue 100-pound commemorative note in 2012

According to a press release dated 2 August 2011, the States of Jersey will issue a 100-pound (US$162) note to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. The note will feature artist Chris Levine’s holographic portrait of QEII called Equanimity.

Treasury and Resources Minister Philip Ozouf said, “In order to issue a new £100 note, I will be asking the States to amend the existing 1959 law which limits the maximum denomination of any currency note to £50. As with our most recent set of banknotes, the commemorative £100 note will feature English, French, and Jèrriais. I am hopeful that, as well as forming an integral and useful part of our currency, these new notes will become collectors’ pieces in their own right.”

Kazakhstan new 10,000-tenge commemorative note confirmed

In the second quarter of 2010, the board of the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan adopted at its meetings 34 resolutions, including one “On emission of an anniversary banknote of KZT 10,000 (ten thousand) denomination devoted to the 20th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan.”

Kazakhstan new 1,000-tengé commemorative and specimen confirmed

1,000 tengé (US$6.90), 2011. Ten million banknotes were introduced on 25 May 2011 to commemoratie the Republic of Kazakhstan's chairmanship in the Organisation of the Islamic Conference.

Obverse: The images are vertical. The main image in the middle of the banknote: the dome of the mausoleum of Hodja Akhmed Yassavi. On the left is the official logo of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. The face value is placed in the lower part of the banknote. The upper part shows the state symbols of the Republic of Kazakhstan: National Emblem and National Flag. The name of the issuing bank, in Kazakh, is placed vertically in the top left, above the name there is an inscription in the Kazakh language stating that counterfeiting banknotes is against the law.

Reverse: The images are horizontal. The main image is the mausoleum of Hodja Akhmed Yassavi. . The face value is placed in the bottom left, in the middle and the right part. The name of the issuing bank, in the Kazakh language is in the middle of the upper half of the note. At the bottom in the middle of the banknotes, there is an inscription in Russian stating that counterfeiting banknotes is against the law.

Guinea new 1,000-, 5,000-, and 10,000-franc commemoratives confirmed

At a press conference on 20 November 2010, Alhasanne Barry, governor of the Banque Centrale de la République de Guinée, unveiled new 1,000-, 5,000-, and 10,000-franc (US$0.15, 0.70, and 1.45, respectively) banknotes to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Guinean currency. In addition to the 50th anniversary logo on the watermark area, the new notes have enhanced security features, additional intaglio printing, and a varnish for additional durability.

Barbados 30th anniversary 5-dollar commemorative confirmed

This 5-dollar note bears an overprint “To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Central Bank of Barbados” over the watermark area at left front, as well as a large gold foil 30 at center front. It was issued in a folder with the following text:

$5 Commemorative Banknote
A limited edition of this $5 note is being issued in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Central Bank of Barbados. Established by Act of Parliament on May 2, 1972, the Bank is charged with managing the countly's foreign reserves, regulating the money supply, maintaining the soundness of the financial system and generally implementing policies conducive to economic development.
The Bank issued the first national currency of Barbados during December 1973. It included notes in $1, $5, $10, $20 and $100 denominations and lc, 5c, lOc, and 25c coins. In 1979, the $1 note was replaced by a $1 coin while a $2 note and $50 note were introduced, respectively, in 1980 and 1989.
Over the years, the Bank has had a rich numismatic programme which has been sensitive to domestic culture and history as well as to social and economic trends at the international level. The 30th anniversary note is distinguished by the large print "30" in gold foil on the face of the note and the words "to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Central Bank of Barbados". This note bears the effigy of Sir Frank Worrell, a well-known Barbadian cricketer who died in 1967.

The overprint text on this $5 is similar to that which appears on the $100 note (Pick 53) commemorating the bank’s 25th anniversary, which makes me wonder if that note was issued for circulation, or if it also was issued in a folder, sold at a premium, and therefore rightly classified as a numismatic product. Does anyone have additional information about these two commemorative notes?

Philippines new 200-peso commemorative for University of Santo Tomas confirmed

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas issued this commemorative 200-peso note, as well as and gold and silver medals, to celebrate the University of Santo Tomas’s 400th anniversary. The central bank issued 10 million legal tender notes and 400 commemorative medals with no monetary value. The commemorative notes feature the Quadricentennial logo (tongues of fire forming the letters U, S and T emanating from the Main Building) overprinted on the watermark area on the front of the “old” style 200-peso note (Pick 195). The central bank also sold 400 numismatic products consisting of an uncut sheet of two 200-peso commemorative notes.

Kazakhstan new 2,000-tenge commemorative confirmed

On 17 January 2011, the National Bank of Kazakhstan issued a new 2,000-tenge (US$13.60) banknote to mark the 2011 Asian Winter Games hosted by Kazakhstan. The banknote bears the emblem of the 7th Asian Winter Games that are scheduled to be held in Astana and Almaty from 30 January to 6 February.

Belarus new 20,000-ruble commemorative confirmed

According to a press release dated 18 November 2010, the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus commemorated its 20th anniversary by issuing a 20,000-ruble (US$6.60) note on 1 December. Only 3,000 notes will be issued in special booklets. The commemorative is based upon the note of the same denomination issued in 2000 (Pick 31), but with a hologram over the watermark reading "NB 1920 1991-2011."

Taiwan 100-dollar commemorative note confirmed

On 6 January 2011, the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) issued a new 100-dollar (US$3.45) legal tender circulating commemorative in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China. The red paper note measures 145 × 70 mm and features a portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen on the front, and the Chung-Shan Building on the back. 


The design is no different from the ordinary NT$100 note (P1991), except for the wording in Chinese language in the reverse of the note, which reads: “Celebrating the 100 years of founding of the Republic of China.” A numismatic product consisting of an uncut three-note sheet in a folder is also available at a premium price of NT$500.

Jamaica 50-dollar commemorative confirmed

The Bank of Jamaica commemorated the 50th anniversary of its founding by issuing a new 50-dollar (US$0.60) note on 15 November 2010, even though the official anniversary celebrations aren't expected to begin until May 2011.

The front of the commemorative note is like the current note (P83) in design and security features, but the bank's logo printed in blue, with the words "50th anniversary and 1960-2010" printed above and below the logo. The back of the commemorative features the Bank of Jamaica headquarters building at Nethersole Place set against a medallion background of morning glory blossoms. This new vignette replaces the Doctors Cave Beach scene on the back of the current $50 note. Both new and old notes will circulate in parallel.

Nicaragua new 50-cordoba commemorative confirmed

On 16 September 2010, Banco Central de Nicaragua (BCN) issued a new 50-cordoba (US$2.30) polymer banknote to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the bank. The note measures 141 x 67 mm and is the first vertically-oriented note in the bank's history. The front of the note features the first headquarters of the bank and the back depicts Somoto Canyon. Preceding notes of the same denomination will circulate in parallel with this commemorative, of which 6 million notes will be issued.

Papua New Guinea new 35th anniversary commemoratives confirmed

All notes are dated (20)10 and signed by Leonard Wilson Kamit and Simon Tosali.



On 15 September 2010 the Bank of Papua New Guinea introduced new polymer notes to commemorate the nation’s 35th anniversary of independence from Australia. All six denominations (2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 kina) have been issued and are like the preceding issues but they have a logo with the text “35th Anniversary 1975 – 2010.” In addition to the notes issued for circulation, the bank is also selling a numismatic product consisting of an album with all the notes with low and matching serial numbers.

Vanuatu new 10,000-vatu polymer commemorative note confirmed

The Reserve Bank of Vanuatu began issuing a new series of banknotes beginning with a polymer 10,000-vatu (US$100) note introduced on 28 July 2010, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of independence. This is the largest denomination in the country. Governor Odo Tevi stated, “The existing note series has come under a lot of pressure over the years, particularly with regard to the lifespan and counterfeiting challenges. It is apparent that in recent years most countries in our region have modernized their currency, therefore it is considered appropriate that in athe 30th year of independence, the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu takes steps to introduce a new modernized series of vatu banknotes.” The new note carries the theme of telecommunication to reflect the recent liberalization of Vanuatu’s telecoms market. The new note was produced by Note Printing Australia.

Thailand new 100-baht commemorative confirmed

On 4 May 2010, Bank of Thailand issued a new 100-baht (US$3.10) note to mark the king’s 60th wedding anniversary. The note is the same as the current 100 baht (P114) but the back features the king & queen standing together. Apparently 9,999,999 notes were printed. A specimen without overprint and with all-zero serial numbers and a specimen number at lower right back has also been confirmed.

Mongolia 20,000-tögrög commemorative specimen confirmed

On 2 October 2006 Mongol Bank issued its first ever 20,000-tögrög (US$14.35) note into circulation (Pick 70). A limited number of 20,000-tögrög (US$14.35) notes with the watermark area on front were overprinted Great Mongol State 800 years 1206 - 2006. This commemorative was the first note in the world to use G&D’s LOOK (Laser Originated Optical Key), a security feature that creates laser-induced effects in the substrate, print color, foil, and varnish. In this case, the 4-digit serial number was written using LOOK.

The above specimen example of the overprinted commemorative has surfaced, along with reports that non-specimen notes with the commemorative overprint were available only encased in Lucite. If anyone can provide more information about this commemorative note, please post a comment. I’m particularly interested in determining if the non-specimen version of the overprinted note is available, as well as how many such notes were printed, and if they entered circulation or were sold as numismatic products at a premium to face value.

Poland new 20-złoty commemorative confirmed

The National Bank of Poland honored the 200th birthday of musician Frédéric François Chopin with a new commemorative 20-złoty (US$7.10) banknote.

On the front center of the banknote measuring 138 x 69 mm is a portrait of Frederic Chopin seen in profile. At left is the mansion in Zelazowa Wola where the composer was born, and at right is a reproduction of Mazurka in B minor, Op. 7 together with the signature of the artist. On the back is a landscape with characteristic Masovian willows and Chopin’s etude in F minor, Op. 10.

This is the fourth commemorative note issued by the NBP, all of which are sold exclusively for the collector market and are not intended for circulation. This latest commemorative went on sale 26 February 2010 at a price of 50 zloty (US$17.20) each.

Kazakhstan new 1,000-tenge commemorative confirmed

The National Bank of Kazakhstan issued a new 1,000-tenge note on 5 January 2010 to commemorate Kazakhstan’s chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in 2010.

A total of 10 million notes will be issued at face value (US$6.75). The note dated 2010 is the same size (134 x 70 mm) as the current note of the same denomination, though the color is now turquoise-green, and the designs are as follows:

Obverse: State Emblem of the Republic of Kazakhstan in left upper corner, decorative image of flying birds in national style, face value in Kazakh language in the center, motives of Kazakh national patterns along the banknote, holographic image of Baiterek monument , color-changing logo of National Bank of Kazakhstan on the right part

Reverse: State Flag of the Republic in the left lower corner, Akorda palace of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the center with face value in Russian language, image of a bird and year of issue 2010, numerical indication of face value in the left lower part, motives of Kazakh national patterns along the banknote.

Trinidad and Tobago new 100-dollar CHOGM commemorative confirmed

The Central Bank of Trinidad & Tobago introduced a new 100-dollar (US$15.80) note to commemorate the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that was held 27-29 November in the capital, Port of Spain.

The new notes is legal tender, circulating side-by-side with the current note of the same denomination (Pick 45). The commemorative note has all the security features of the current note, though there are two changes to the front:
 

• 60 years of the Commonwealth 1949-2009
• CHOGM logo in single color

On the reverse of the note are the following changes:
 

• CHOGM logo in full color
• Carnival sun image at the top of the note
• The Port-of-Spain International Waterfront Centre and the view of the city of Port-of-Spain in the background
• The oil rig has been shifted to the right of the note
• Larger $100 numeral at the top right of the note
• ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS in words at the bottom of the note.

Sri Lanka new 1,000-rupee commemorative confirmed

According to a press release, on 17.11.2009 the Central Bank of Sri Lanka introduced a new 1,000-rupee (US$8.75) commemorative banknote to mark the ushering of peace and prosperity to Sri Lanka.

In terms of section 52 A (1) (a) and ( of the Monetary Law Act (Amendment) No.6 of 1998, with the approval of the Hon. Minister of Finance, the Central Bank issues commemorative coins and notes. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka issued the first commemorative note to mark the 50th Anniversary of Independence of Sri Lanka in 1998 and this is the second commemorative note that is being issued.

The theme on the obverse of the note is one country and one nation in harmony, progressing towards prosperity under the leadership of His Excellency President, Mahinda Rajapaksa. The obverse depicts the image of His Excellency President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, which is to the right of the note. A map of Sri Lanka with the rising sun in the background and a “Punkalasa” with ears of paddy at center left depicts territorial integrity and prosperity respectively, that are results of national harmony and peace. 

The valiant contribution made by the nation’s victorious sons and daughters of the security forces and the police is the theme on the reverse of the note. The design at the center depicts the hoisting of the national flag by members of the security forces. Images of the Mavil Aru annicut and Thoppigala rock (Baron’s Cap) that were turning points of humanitarian operations of the security forces appear in the background. 

The size of the note is 157 mm x 78.5 mm and the predominant colour is blue. The notes are identified by a serial prefix of Q and the numbers of the notes are starting from Q/1 000001 onwards and appear on the obverse in Arabic numerals, horizontally on the left and vertically on the right of the note. 

The note contains several current security features. The watermark depicting the heraldic lion of Sri Lanka, with the sword highlighted in a panel clear of printing and Cornerstones as hitherto used in current Sri Lanka Rs 1000 note, 1.2 mm wide windowed clear text security thread, see-through feature in exact registration and invisible fluorescent printing have been incorporated in the note.
The note carries the signatures in facsimile of His Excellency the President and Minister of Finance, Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Mr Ajith Nivard Cabraal, with the date 2009-05-20.

The note was issued to His Excellency President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, by the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr Ajith Nivard Cabraal on 17th November 2009 at the John Exter International Conference Hall of the Central Bank in Colombo. A limited number of notes with the first serial numbers in an attractive folder will be issued at a price of Rs. 1,500 each.

The note will be legal tender in Sri Lanka for the payment of any amount and will be a liability of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka whilst in circulation.

Mexico 100-peso commemorative has error

On 23 September 2009, the Bank of Mexico introduced two commemorative banknotes: a paper one to celebrate the bicentennial of independence, and a polymer one to celebrate the centennial of the Mexican Revolution. 

The 100-peso commemorative with series A/A-A/E has an error in the microprinted text. On the front, the text appears correctly as “SUFRAGIO EFECTIVO Y NO REELECCION.” However, on the back the second word is misspelled as “ELECTIVO.” Apparently a corrected note will appear in 2010, and the error notes will remain in circulation.

Morocco new 50-dirham commemorative confirmed

Bank Al-Maghrib issued a 50-dirham (US$6.45) note in mid-October 2009 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the central bank. Apparently 4 million notes will be issued at face value.

This is the first commemorative banknote issued in Morocco. It was designed by Roger Pfund, the Swiss artist who has also designed notes for Switzerland, France, and the European Union.




The front of the 147 x 70 mm green note features portraits of Kings Mohammed VI, Hassan II, Mohammed V. The back depicts the headquarters of Bank Al-Maghrib in Rabat. The speech delivered in 1959 by Mohammed V at the opening of Bank Al Maghrib is microprinted in on the back.

Pixel watermark debuts on Mexico 200-peso commemorative

On 23 September 2009, the Bank of Mexico introduced two new commemorative banknotes. The 200-peso paper note celebrates the bicentenial of independence. It is also noteworthy because it's the first note in the world with a new security feature: the Pixel watermark, developed by ArjoWiggins Security.

A new development in the field of multi-tone watermarks, Pixel watermarks consist of patterns of dark dots of varying sizes on light backgrounds to create 3D effects such as the texture on the angel's wing on Mexico's new 200-peso commemorative. According to ArjoWiggins, in the coming months 20 new banknotes will be issued in Asia and Latin America featuring Pixel watermarks.

Poland new 20-zloty commemorative confirmed

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the poet Julius Slowacki, the National Bank of Poland issued 80,000 new 20-zloty (US$6.90) notes on 23 September 2009. The notes were issued in a folder at a price of 29-zloty each, which makes these non-circulating numismatic products.

Dated 08 STYCZNIA 2009 (08.01.2009), the front features a portrait of Julius Slowacki and a view of the Krzemieniec chalet in Ukraine where the poet was born. The back of the note depicts the portion of the reproduction of the poem "Sedation" and Sigismund III Vasa at Castle Square in Warsaw, and profiles of flying cranes.

The note is protected by a watermark of the poet's face and a registration device in the form of a pen inkwell. The note was designed by Maciej Kopecki and engraved by Przemyslaw Krajewski.

This is the third commemorative banknote from Poland.

Mexico introduces two new commemorative notes

In a press release dated 23 September 2009, the Bank of Mexico announced the immediate introduction of two new commemorative banknotes: a paper one to celebrate the bicentennial of independence, and a polymer one to celebrate the centennial of the Mexican Revolution. Each will be limited to 50 million pieces and these notes will not replace the currently circulating notes of the same denominations.

20,000 sets of notes with matching serial numbers were sold in a special folder. Anyone with information on the original cost of a set or the ability to scan the folder is encouraged to share that info and the images.

Trans-Dniester commemorative 10-ruble note confirmed

On 18 August 2009, the Trans-Dniester Republican Bank introduced a 10-ruble banknote commemorating 15 years of national currency. 1,000 copies of the note were packaged in a special folder. All have sold out at US$50 each.

The note is a completely new design, featuring the date (2009) and a portrait of Alexander Suvorov and the bank initials on front. The watermark is of Alexander Suvorov with an electrotype ПРБ. The back depicts the headquarters building of the Trans-Dniester Republican Bank and the text (in Russian) “FIFTEEN YEARS OF NATIONAL CURRENCY.”

Philippines issues commemorative notes

On 9 July 2009, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) introduced 12 million banknotes with an overprint commemorating 60 years of central banking. The overprint appears on the watermark area on all six circulating denominations: 20-, 50-; 100-; 200-; 500-, and 1,000-piso.

Thailand new 50-baht commemorative confirmed

This 50-baht (US$1.45) specimen with commemorative overprint was issued on 1 November 2004 to commemorate the inauguration of the Note Printing Works. The banknote comes in a blue folder. This note exists only as a specimen; there is no regular issue with this overprint (shown below broken into two lines for legibility), which reads in English “In commemoration of the inauguration of the Banknotes Management Department of the bank of Thailand, 1 November 2004 (B.E. 2547)”:

Papua New Guinea issues commemorative 20- and 100-kina notes

On April 22, 2009, the governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea, Wilson Kamit, gave the following speech concerning the issue of commemorative 20-kina and 100-kina banknotes, which became legal tender the following day:

“Members of the Board, invited guests, staff and management of the Bank of PNG, media representatives, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the release of the our new K20 and K100 paper banknotes commemorating the 2009 KINA & TOEA DAY which is on 19 April 2009. This day unfortunately falls on the weekend this year so we decided to celebrate it today. 

Ladies and gentlemen, when we introduced our own currency in 1975, it was one of the many steps of nation building, just like introducing our own national flag, national anthem and international institutions such as the Bank of PNG. The first issue of banknotes was in three denominations, namely the 2 Kina, 5 Kina and 10 Kina notes. The 20 Kina banknote was introduced three years later in 1978, followed by the 50 Kina banknote in 1989 and the 100 Kina note in 2005. Initially, apart from the 100 Kina banknote, all these denominations were in paper substrate.

Our currency has evolved over the 34 years, keeping abreast of the growth and development of the country, the monetization within the economy, changes in the technology of producing currency and the economics (cost) of producing coins and banknotes. You would no doubt have noticed that we have converted our banknotes from paper to polymer substrate as a result of advancement in security and technologies for printing banknotes. This however does not stop us from issuing paper banknotes as well because the technology for paper substrate has evolved with advanced security features as we shall see on our new K100 banknote. 

In 2005 we commenced a review of our family of currency. The Bank introduced the K100 as the highest denomination in the family of banknotes, and reduced the size of the K1 coin. The larger sized K1 coin is being gradually withdrawn from circulation. We also demonetized the one and two toea copper coins. Last year, we introduced the new K2 coin which is being used alongside the K2 banknote. Given the frequent usage with the resultant wear and tear of the K2 banknote, we will assess the usage of the K2 coin before deciding on its future. 

For the banknotes, we standardized the main theme on all the new series to show the National Parliament House on the front which emphasized Nation building and Nationhood. The images of the Parliament House on each of the banknotes are taken at different angles to make each note unique and different. On the back of the notes, we retained the original designs of traditional forms of money used in different parts of Papua New Guinea.

There are advanced security features incorporated in all these new series of banknotes to protect against counterfeiting. To date, we have not experience any major counterfeiting in our banknotes but it is worthy to take preventive action than to be sorry after. 
As I have mentioned during previous releases of our various currencies, Papua New Guinea is predominantly a cash-based economy, where the majority of our people continue to use cash (coins and banknotes) as the main form of payment in settling their transactions. We will therefore ensure an acceptable quality of banknotes with longevity, given our humid, tropical climate and the frequent and rough handling of currency by the public. 

The Bank has engaged De La Rue Currency to produce these two commemorative paper banknotes. As a risk management strategy, we have the option to use them should the supplier of our polymer (plastic) banknotes be unable to produce our banknotes. De La Rue has developed a more advanced security feature called the Optiks security thread, which can be seen through the aperture at the front of the new K100 note, making it difficult to produce counterfeits. It is also prudent to have an alternative supplier so that we can optimize on the price quality and swiftness of delivery of orders from our suppliers.”

Papua New Guinea 2003 commemorative confirmed

Based upon the 1973-2003 golden logo overprint in the lower right front, this paper 5-kina note from Papua New Guinea was apparently issued to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Bank of Papua New Guinea. The serial number prefix LWK are the initials of Leonard Wilson Kamit, governor of the bank since 1999.

North Korean commemorative notes confirmed

A complete set of North Korean notes with overprints has recently been reported. Unfortunately, little is known about these notes other than that they appear to be the latest issued notes (dates range from 1992 to 2007) with a common overprint in Korean and the Western numerals 95. The literal translation of the overprint is “Great leader Kim Ilsung comrade birth 95th.” Since he was born April 15, 1912, his 95th birthday would have been celebrated in 2007. This seems to fit the latest date on the notes, but does not necessarily mean the notes were issued in 2007. If anyone knows the actual date of introduction, please send me an email so that I can share that information. Also, I’d be interested to learn if these were issued for circulation, or if they were sold only as a numismatic product in special packaging.

Poland issues commemorative 10-zloty note

On 3 November 2008, the National Bank of Poland introduced a new 10-zloty note to commemorate the 90th anniversary of regaining independence. 80,000 notes were packaged in a folder and sold for PLN15. The note was engraved by Maciej Kopecki.

Hong Kong issues Olympics commemorative note

The following note is available as a single note in a booklet for HK$138, in a sheet of four for HK$338, a full sheet of 35 for HK$1,388, paired with an old-style note for HK$268, and a sheet of four paired with old notes for HK$868. The money raised from the sale (after deducting face value and costs) will be donated to charity, with a portion set aside for local sports development. Although the notes will be legal tender in Hong Kong they are not intended to be used in the local economy, and are being sold at a higher cost than their actual value.

China issues Olympics commemorative note

Macau to issue 20-pacata note celebrating Olympics

According to a March 8, 2008, article in Macau Daily Times, the Macau branch of the Bank of China (BOC) is set to issue four million 20-pataca (US$2.50) banknotes in commemoration of the 29th Olympic Games that will be held in Beijing during August 2008. 

A spokesman of the executive council, Mr. Tong Chi Kin, said the note will be the same purple color as the currently circulating 20-pacata note (Pick 103). The front of the new note will feature the Bank of China building, the architecture representing the location of the torch relay of the ancient Olympic Games, as well as the emblem of the Beijing Olympic Games, and a vertical line that reads "In Commemoration of the 29th Olympic Games" in both Chinese and Portuguese. The back of the note will depict the Beijing Olympic Stadium (also known as the "Bird's Nest"), and Macau's Golden Lotus symbol.

Thailand issues new commemorative notes on sheet

16 baht (US$0.50), ND (2007). 15 million uncut sheets issued November 28, 2007, to commemorate King Rama IX’s 80th birthday. On the 1-baht note the king is giving a speech during his coronation in 1950 at the Sutthaisawan Pratat Hall; on the 5-baht note he’s in a royal procession by land, marking his 3th Circle Birthday Anniversary in 1963; and on the 10-baht note a large crowd is paying tribute during the 60th anniversary celebrations of the king’s accession to the throne in 2006. The back depicts various aspects of the king’s royal biography, activities, and talents. 147 x 229 mm.

Uganda to issue commemorative 10,000-shilling note in November

On 16 October 2007, allAfrica.com reported that the Bank of Uganda intends to issue a special 10,000-shilling (US$5.75) note ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled to take place in Kampala, November 23-25, 2007. 

“The note will be available for the public to transact business and for special collectors. It will, however, be in limited supply,” said Juma Walusimbi, BoU communications director. “The currency note will also be a special package offered to the heads of government who will attend CHOGM. The bank wants to be part of Uganda’s effort to host this very important international meeting,” he said, adding that it was normal practice for central banks to issue commemorative coins and notes for important occasions.

Brunei issues new 20-ringgit polymer commemorative note

The above note commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement between both Brunei and Singapore. The note is available individually, in uncut sheets of three or 24 notes (200 and 25 sheets produced, respectively), and in a limited edition of 2,000 sets with similar Singapore notes bearing matching serial numbers.

The above note commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement between both Brunei and Singapore. The Monetary Authority of Singapore will issue a total of 3 million individual notes, and is also selling 10,000 limited edition sets with similar Brunei notes bearing matching serial numbers for S$88.

Ireland’s Ulster Bank to issue £5 note featuring George Best

Northern Ireland’s Ulster Bank today announced that it will release a limited edition £5 (US$8) note featuring legendary football (soccer) star George Best. The bank plans to issue one million commemorative notes in November to coincide with the first anniversary of the death of the celebrated Northern Irishman and Manchester United star at age 59 due to multiple organ failure following decades of alcohol abuse.
Application forms will be available from Ulster Bank branches in Northern Ireland & Republic of Ireland or online from this web site starting November 13. The commemorative notes will then be available to purchase at any Ulster Bank branch in Northern Ireland starting November 27.
