Fleet of 20 tall ships to race across Great Lakes this summer

At least 20 tall ships are scheduled to visit each of the Great Lakes this year; a fleet that includes a replica Viking longship and a 170-foot Spanish Galleon making their debut on America's freshwater seas.

The El Galeon Andalucia, a 495-ton, authentic wooden replica of a galleon that was part of Spain's West Indies fleet, and the Dragon Harald Fairhar, a replica Viking longship built in Norway, are crossing the Atlantic Ocean this year to join the Tall Ships Challengereturning to the Great Lakes in 2016.

The fleet will sail the lakes over the course of four months, with scheduled port stops and races on lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior between July and September.

The organized tall ships show last visited Michigan in 2013.

Hey Rod - couldn't help but notice you've included one of the greatest and fastest schooners to ever grace the seas in your photo montage.  And of course, as a proud Bluenoser I toast your inclusion of the Bluenose II.

For those of you questioning my use of that term, Yes Bluenoser is a word sometimes used to describe those of us born in Nova Scotia, proud home of the original Bluenose - a winner of the Lipton International Fishing Race 7 years in a row before retiring in 1937 !!!  In 1963 the Olands (the Olands Beer family) built the Bluenose II using the same drawings and plans of the original Bluenose and she is Canada's official sailing ambassador to the world.

Now Rod, get yer ship together and start posting in the right places lest someone tries to give you ship for your wayward postings.

Great analogy Rod!! We had a parade of tall ships sail through Halifax Harbour back in the 80s or 90s ... So long ago I forget but it was the first year of such a magnificent sight ... all those tall ships ... reminiscent of years long gone by - and things of beauty each one.
