DEADLY: The Barrett Light .50 calibre rifle

He blasted the jihadis with the world’s most powerful rifle during the battle for the besieged city of Ramadi in Iraq last week.

The staff sergeant, one of the best marksmen in the elite force, used a semiautomatic Barrett Light .50 calibre rifle to fire into a house.

It has a range of more than a mile and when fired with armour-piercing rounds can destroy lightly-armoured vehicles and aircraft on runways.

The sniper was part of a small team of British special forces who had been embedded with the Iraqi army to act as advisers.

Islamic State militants were using the two-storey concrete house as a command post to launch suicide attacks against the Iraqi army.

Dozens of civilians were being used as human shields to protect the property, forcing SAS commanders to rule out an air strike or rocket attack.

“The command post was well fortified.

“They considered an air strike but that would cause too much collateral damage.

“They looked at a rocket attack but there was the possibility that the blast might cause the building to collapse and intelligence suggested there were civilians being held in the lower storey and in buildings close by.

“A staff sergeant in charge of one of the SAS teams working with the Iraqis came up with the idea of shooting through the wall.

“It was a case of ‘there’s nothing to lose’. If it worked the suicide attacks would be stopped – if it failed nothing would be lost.”

The Daily Star Sunday has learned the SAS sniper positioned himself in another building around 1,000m away from the target but with a direct line of fire.

He was supported by three colleagues who had prepared around six magazines filled with armourpiercing rounds.

The attack occurred just after first light one day last week.

The marksman fired 30 rounds into the building, causing the wall to partially collapse.

Later that day the SAS and Iraqi forces seized the building and found three dead jihadis.

They were surrounded by maps and communications equipment.

A defence source said: “The armour-piercing rounds had a devastating effect.

“The bodies of the Islamic State fighters had been absolutely pulverised.

SHOT: The property was a kilometre away from the shooter

“One had been decapitated and another had been cut in half. It was a real scene of carnage – but the tactic had proved incredibly effective.

“The lives of around 20 civilians had been saved.

“The suicide attacks had been stopped and, without any command and control, the Isis fighters had retreated into another part of the city.

“It was a classic SAS operation.”

Ramadi was overrun by Isis militants in May but the Iraqi army has claimed in recent days to have “liberated” the city.
