Iranians celebrating oil industry nationalization on March 19

Tehran, March 19, IRNA – March 19th coincides with 29th of Esfand in the Iranian calendar which is the anniversary of the nationalization of oil industry in Iran.

The oil industry was nationalized on a day like today 67 years ago during the premiership of late Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh.

The colonial powers used to extract and benefit from Iran’s oil industry before nationalization of oil industry in the country.

During the 1890s, research and reports were being published that Iran had great oil potential. Some advisors of British tycoon William Knox D'Arcy made D'Arcy aware of these reports and promised him wealth if he invested in this venture. D'Arcy agreed and sent out representatives to Tehran to win a concession that would give him the exclusive rights to prospect for oil in Iran. On April 16, 1901, negotiations commenced between D'Arcy's representatives and Mozzafar al-Din Shah over the potential oil concession.

During this time period Great Britain and Russia had a great rivalry over the influence each wanted inside Persia. Both imperial powers believed that Persia and the Middle East were important to their imperial economic and military interests.

In 1901, William Knox D'Arcy and Mozzafar al-Din Shah of Iran signed an oil contract which was later named D'Arcy Concession.

D’Arcy Concession was a petroleum oil concession which gave D'Arcy the exclusive rights to prospect for oil in Iran.

During this exploration for oil, D'Arcy and his team encountered financial troubles and struggled to find sellable amounts of oil. They were about to give up but eventually struck large commercial quantities of oil in 1908. After these large commercial quantities of oil were found, the Anglo-Persian Oil Company took over the concession in 1909.

In 1909, shortly after the commercial quantities of oil were found, Burmah Oil thought that a new corporate structure needed to be created in order to work the concession. This led to the creation of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and Burmah Oil made it a publicly traded company, by selling shares off to the public in 1909. At this time Burmah Oil maintained control and the majority of the ordinary shares. For William Knox D'Arcy, he was compensated for his exploration costs and became a director of the new company, but as his role quickly faded out, D'Arcy began a subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian company to look for further oil exploration sites.
The Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC) was a British company founded in 1908 following the discovery of a large oil field in Masjed Soleiman, Iran. It was the first company to extract petroleum from Iran. In 1935 APOC was renamed the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) and in 1954 it became the British Petroleum Company (BP), one of the antecedents of the modern BP public limited company.

In September 1941, the laborers of Iran’s South Oil company grouped in Khuzestan Oil Workers Syndicate to struggle against Britain’s colonial role in Iran’s oil industry.

Later in March 1951, the Iranian parliament voted to nationalize the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) and its holdings, and shortly thereafter the Iranian public elected a champion of nationalization, Mohammad Mossadegh, Prime Minister.

The nationalization of oil industry is celebrated ever since in Iran every year.

Mastercard : Iran’s private banks start offering MasterCard.....

Tehran, Iran, March 17

By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:

Some private banks in Iran have started to offer MasterCard. Using MasterCard and other international credit cards was impossible while Iran was under sanctions. The sanctions were lifted in 2016.

The least credit of the cards currently issued by private banks in Iran is 100 euros and the ceiling is 3,000 euros, Mehr news agency reported March 17.

As early as sanctions were removed in January 2016, there were talks about the coming of international credit cards to Iran. Many a time did ministers or banks say their coming was imminent, but with no show.
The cards are difficult to find their way to Iran because of their American origin. A set of primary sanctions by the US is still in place, restricting the use of the dollar for Iran.

However, now there are unofficial reports that some private banks in Iran have started cooperation with European banks in order to be able to issue MasterCard and visa cards for Iranians.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says the new Iranian year is a time to create new jobs for the country’s youths, adding that what the country achieved in the past year in terms of curbing inflation and creating jobs has been unprecedented in the past 25 years.

“The new year will be the year of progress and development for our dear nation. The new year will be the year of more employment [opportunities] for our youths,” Rouhani said in a televised address to the Iranian nation on Monday on the occasion of the Iranian New Year.

“We need to carry out more efforts to compensate for the shortcomings,” he added.

“What we achieved in the last year in terms of curbing inflation, economic growth and job creation, has had no precedent in the past 25 years,” the Iranian president said.

During the preceding year, the country achieved an economic growth rate of eight percent for the first time after 11 years, he noted.

Rouhani also commended efforts by the country’s oil and gas industry in doubling the production of crude oil and condensate last year.

“Through oil diplomacy and because of efforts made by engineers and workers we managed to reclaim our past position in the production of oil and gas and condensate,” the Iranian chief executive said.

He also referred to the unveiling of a charter of citizenship rights last year, saying, “The charter of citizenship rights was unveiled last year as promised. Today, we will implement that charter with the help of you people.”

The Iranian president warned that “everybody must know that if they violate the citizenship rights, they will pay a very high price.”

He noted that Iranians must take part in two important elections this year, noting that ensuring people’s maximum turnout in those elections as well as holding “healthy competitions and constitutional elections” must be everybody’s goal.

Earlier on Monday, in his televised message to the nation on the occasion of the Persian New Year, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei stressed the importance of domestic production and employment, especially for the Iranian youths.

“These are the main and key sectors. If we manage to focus on these two sectors and plan and categorize our affairs on this basis, I believe that the task will move forward to a great extent and impressive and tangible achievements will be made,” the Leader said.

The Leader designated the new Iranian calendar year of 1396 as the “Year of Economy of Resistance: Production and Employment."

Amano made the announcement in a meeting with Baroness Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, and Yousef Al Otaiba, the current United Arab Emirates Ambassador to the United States, in Carnegie Hall in New York on Monday.
He said that from the IAEA standpoint, Iran has so far been sticking to all its JCPOA commitments.
He referred to the JCPOA as a helpful and valuable accord for the international community.
Outlining the IAEA duties in connection with the nuclear accord, Amano said the duties fall within framework of verification and supervision over all Iran’s nuclear activities.
He said as far as verification is concerned, the IAEA officials have so far had access to all Iran’s facilities and different dimensions of its nuclear program, being witnessing and supervising full implementation of the JCPOA provisions.
To a question on Iran’s missile program and likely relations between Iran and Hizbollah and Hamas and support for Ansarallah in Yemen, which in opinion of the UAE envoy inconsistent with the JCPOA spirit, Amano said the IAEA has the duty to supervise nuclear program and confirm correspondence of Iran’s nuclear program with the nuclear deal’s provision and thus far, no such a violation of the provisions on Iran’s part has yet been observed.

All firms to become privatized within a year

علی طیب نیا وزیر امور اقتصاد و دارایی
News ID: 3936430 - Tue 21 March 2017 - 09:26
TEHRAN, Mar. 21 (MNA) – Iran’s Economy Minister Tayebnia said, despite difficulties and restrictions, all transferable state-owned companies will be handed over to the private sector in a year’s time.

Ali Tayebnia, Iranian Minister of Economy, while acknowledging that certain barriers exist, said the private sector will have been put in charge of all transferable state-own companies by the end of the new Iranian calendar year.

“Within a year, assignment of all state-owned firms to the private sector will be executed via resolving some problems like low profitability of a number of these companies despite their substantial assets,” he underlined.

Meanwhile, Tayebnia admitted that opposition of some managers and directors of public companies might pose obstacle to the privatization process.

It is widely believed that if current governmental organizations are privatized they will need to become more efficient. At present many are not profitable due to large numbers of unnecessary employees hired by the government to reduce unemployment. Furthermore, many of these companies are subsidized by oil revenues. True privatization will inevitably lead to many unpopular job cuts and large scale lay offs.

کابینه یازدهم.jpg
News ID: 3936681 - Tue 21 March 2017 - 10:29
TEHRAN, Mar. 21 (MNA) – President Hassan Rouhani has congratulated Leader of the Islamic Revolution on the Persian New Year’s Eve.

Mr. Rouhani’s congratulatory phone call came on March 21 where he assured the Leader of the continuing Resistance Economy policies so dearly held by Ayatollah Khamenei as a remedy to the economic woes and the recession and stagnation which had hit the economy even with the implementation of the JCPOA.
In the phone call, Rouhani also suggested national unity to bring a modest level of advancement to the country, with no less valuable recommendations by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution which Rouhani had alluded to in many of its speeches. “Economic growth, more jobs, especially for the young cohort will best be informed by your guidelines as ever,” Rouhani said, to which Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei congratulated back to Rouhani the Persian News Year’s Eve and to the whole nation as well.

Iran’s third Airbus delivery postponed

ایرباس321
News ID: 3936371 - Mon 20 March 2017 - 15:26
TEHRAN, Mar. 20 (MNA) – An informed resource said, most probably, banking issues have caused a delay in delivery of the third Airbus aircraft to Iran Air.

As quoted by IRIB from Paris, the informed resource said Iran’s third purchased aircraft from Airbus Airbus Aerospace company was not delivered according to the schedule mainly due to banking restrictions rather than technical issues.

An A330 aero plane was scheduled to be handed over to Iran Air, the Iranian national flag carrier, prior to beginning of the new Persian calendar year Nowruz though the process has been postponed to following days.

“Banking restrictions rather than technical issues have most probably caused the delay in the delivery process,” he underlined.

In a lucrative deal, Iran Air (Homa) has purchased 100 Airbus aircraft though only two airplanes have been so far delivered to the Iranian airline.

Enemies resorting to economic pressure to achieve goals: Leader

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the issue of economy is a priority for Iran, adding that the enemies seek to undermine the trust of the Iranian nation in the Islamic establishment through mounting economic pressure.

"To succeed in realizing their objectives against Iran, the Iranians and the Islamic Republic, the enemies of the Islamic Republic are looking for economic strategies and in better words, seek to deal economic blows to the Iranian nation," the Leader said in an address to a huge gathering of pilgrims in the holy Iranian city of Mashhad on Tuesday on the first day of the Persian New Year.

Ayatollah Khamenei described the new Persian calendar year as “important” for the country, both in terms of the need for more economic mobility and the upcoming presidential and city councils elections.

He said the Iranians must also show their national unity in the New Year and prove their commitment to the Islamic establishment and the revolution, and flaunt their allegiance to the enemies.

'Economic woes unrelated to Islamic foundations'

The Leader said the enemy seeks to attribute the existing economic issues to Islam and blame the Islamic foundations of the country for the economic woes.

“The enemy’s goal is to dismay and disillusion the Iranian nation with the Islamic establishment through economic pressure and drive a wedge between the people and the Islamic establishment,” the Leader stated, emphasizing, however, that the enemy has not been and would never be able to achieve its objectives.

0cd75d8a-87b0-4b7f-93f1-0ad52cc56ef8.jpg

“The enemy in its widespread propaganda is making efforts to attribute the country’s livelihood and economic shortcomings to the Islamic establishment and the Islamic Republic of Iran and this is the enemy’s plot,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

“The enemies want to pretend that the Islamic establishment has not been and will never be able to solve the economic and major woes of the Iranian nation…This claim stems from their grudge and hatred against the Islamic establishment and this claim is contrary to the truth,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei acknowledged the existence of weaknesses in the country, adding, however, that these shortcomings stem from management flaws.

The Islamic establishment and the Islamic Republic have offered "prominent and remarkable" services to Iran and the Iranians, the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the services are incomparable to those provided in the era before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The Leader said the population of the country has grown two-fold since the Revolution, but the services provided, including in infrastructure, have increased by "a very eye-catching" and much greater rate.

Figures indicating Iran’s progress in the military and economy are very remarkable, Ayatollah Khamenei said, adding that the number of university students, as one example, has increased 25 times the pre-revolution figures.

There has been a six-fold increase in the length of roads built in the country, while electricity generation has grown 14 times and non-oil exports have risen 57-fold, the Leader said.

'Elections very important for Iran'

Elsewhere, Ayatollah Khamenei described as "very important" the issue of elections in the Islamic Republic, whether it be the presidential, parliamentary or city council polls.

"Elections are one of the two pillars of religious democracy," the Leader said, adding, "We boast to the world courtesy of our elections and the enemies ignore our elections in order to deal a blow to the Iranian nation and the Islamic Republic."

Ayatollah Khamenei said a massive turnout in the elections is a top priority, adding, "The Iranian nation must shine in the elections."

He also said the law must be observed to the letter in the elections. "Whatever the result of the elections by the nation, it is credible and lawful."

The Leader said he would not interfere in the elections and has never recommended any candidate in any polls but would take action if anyone seeks to stand against the vote of the people and disrupt the elections.

"If anyone seeks to defy the result of the nation's vote, I will stand against them," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

BoE reluctant to help facilitate Iran-UK trade

Reuters in a report quoted informed sources as saying that the Bank of England is still reluctant to facilitate trade between the two countries even though the government is trying to open Iran-UK trading oppositions.

While the British government has reaffirmed its commitment to help Iran’s reintegration into the global financial system, reports say the country’s central bank is still reluctant to facilitate trade between the two countries.

Reuters in an exclusive report quoted informed sources as saying that the Bank of England (BoE) had recently turned down a request by Tehran to set up special clearing accounts for its banks.

Such accounts, for Iran's own Central Bank or for the British subsidiaries of Iranian banks, would allow them to make and receive payments in sterling, business so far rejected by commercial banks.

"That would send a huge message to the market. What commercial bank is practically going to stop Bank of England payments? None," Reuters quoted one Western source as saying.

However, the sources said the BoE seems uninterested in resolving the problem for now.

"The Bank of England has proved resistant to intervening in any kind of positive way in order to assist trade between Iran and UK," said the Western source.

Reuters further quoted a senior Iranian banking official in Tehran as saying that the BoE had suspended anything related to Iran. “Everything has been put on hold."

The UK government, eager to boost trade with new markets like Iran after last year's vote to leave the European Union, has struggled to convince British banks to boost trade with Iran, sources have told Reuters.

British trade minister Liam Fox told a parliamentary committee last week he had commissioned work from his department to look at how to normalize "effective payment channels" with Iran to try to open up trading opportunities.

In response to questions from Reuters, the British government said it was still committed to working closely with all parties, including UK banks and industry groups, to help open opportunities for trade between Britain and Iran.

"This will be a vital part of Iran's re-integration into the international community and we will continue to work to strengthen and expand our trading relationship for mutual benefit," said a statement attributed to a government spokesperson, as reported by Reuters.
