Baghdad, May 4 (Aknews) – “The State of Law did not nominate a compromise candidate to replace al-Maliki to resolve disputes with National Coalition about the Prime Minister post, while the latter hinted about nominating one person to prevent the dispersal of votes," says a member in State of Law led by the outgoing PM Nuri al-Maliki.
"State of Law does not have any candidate other than Nuri al-Maliki and the claims about a compromise candidate for our list to replace al-Maliki are not true," Khalid al-Yawar has stated today.
State of Law and Iraqi National coalitions announced their alliance on May 4 and after the alliance they have 159 seats, four seats less than the majority needed to form the government, 89 for the State of Law and 70 for the INC.
State of Law insists on nominating its only candidate for the prime minister post Nuri al-Maliki who does not have the approval of the National Coalition particularly Sadr movement which has 40 seats within the coalition.
"State of Law adheres to its candidate to hold the prime minister post for a second term, and the chances for Maliki to take the job are high since he is the only candidate on our list, while the National Coalition has more than one candidate."
He pointed out that within two weeks, the joint committees between the two lists would work to end the issue.
The National Coalition led by Ammar al-Hakim implied it would nominate one person for the position if its ally State of Law insisted on nominating al-Maliki only to prevent the disperse of votes.
The member in the Iraqi National Coalition (INC) Kamila al-Moussawi said: "If State of Law did not nominate any candidate other than al-Maliki, then the National Coalition will nominate one candidate only to prevent the dispersal of its votes."
"The adherence of State of Law to one candidate can not be explained and its insistence on only one candidate promotes the National Coalition to nominate only one also so that there will be no dispersal in votes," she added.
According to the Iraqi Constitution, the outgoing President of the Republic will entrust the biggest bloc to form the next government within 15 days from the date of ratification on the election results, and according to these results al-Iraqiya list is still the biggest bloc after winning 91 seats in the elections out of 325.
