Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to Step Down

COLLAPSE STORY

BY JIM MIKLASZEWSKI

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is stepping down amid criticism of the president’s national security team on a series of global issues, including the threat posed by the militant group known as ISIS.

Senior defense officials confirmed to NBC News Monday that Hagel was forced to resign.

The officials say the White House has lost confidence in Hagel to carry out his role at the Pentagon. According to one senior official, “He wasn’t up to the job.”

President Barack Obama is expected to make the announcement at the White House at 11:10AM ET.

Hagel, the only Republican on the president's national security team and the first enlisted combat veteran to lead the Department of Defense, has served in the job since February 2013.

The news of Hagel’s departure was first reported by the New York Times.

Never been a Hagel fan, but isn't it interesting how Obama is cleaning house and only putting people in power who agree wholeheartedly with him. If anyone voices concerns over the current directions of the administration, they either retire, resign, or show up dead. Look at how many of the top brass in the military have been replaced by Obama during his term.

That was one of the reasons Hagel was brought in in the first place. Chuck was a RINO that was no friend of the military, and BO brought him in to reduce the military and tout that Chuck was a republican. I never cared for Hagel (nor the damage he has done). Glad he is leaving, but concerned as to who BO will nominate for the position next?  :twocents:

What's the chances this cabinet position stands vacant for the next 2 years?

GO RV, and NO BV

With Cruz vowing no new confirmations, very likely.

Interesting timing, Ferguson about to blow up and Hagel against the military firing on Americans.

Someone had to take the bullet for the screwup! LOL

How Do You Spell Scapegoat? H-A-G-E-L

So Chuck Hagel has been fired as defense secretary. We were critical of his appointment, and opposed his confirmation by the Senate. But let's be clear: Hagel has done what he was asked and what was expected of him at the Pentagon. To the degree he has deviated from the Obama White House line, he's been more right than wrong (e.g., on the threat the Islamic State poses).

So why has he been fired? Because the Obama White House needs a scapegoat. President George W, Bush fired Don Rumsfeld in connection with a change in strategy (the surge) and to bring in someone of independent stature. That's not the case today. President Obama continues to want a Pentagon with weak leadership and little independence. There's therefore no reason to expect the next two years of Obama foreign and defense policy to be any better than the past two.

But not without a parting shot!

Hagel Unchained: Departing Defense Secretary Fires Parting Shots in Interview Last Week

Departing Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel may have sealed his exit in this interview with Charlie Rose last week. Rose conducted the interview at the Pentagon.

In the interview, Hagel made two key points that serve as accusations that President Barack Obama is mismanaging the United States military and the ISIS threat.

Rose asked Hagel to elaborate on comments that he made in a speech at the Reagan Library last weekend. In that speech, Hagel said that America’s military capability, while still the best in the world, is being threatened.

Hagel re-iterated that to Rose, but also left viewers to wonder about the direction that President Obama is taking the military.

“I am worried about it, I am concerned about it, Chairman Dempsey is, the chiefs are, every leader of this institution,” Hagel said, including Pentagon leadership but leaving both President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s names out of his list of officials who are worried about the U.S. military’s declining capability. Hagel said that the Congress and the American people need to know what while the U.S. military remains the strongest, best trained and most motivated in the world, its lead is being threatened because of policies being implemented now.

Read more, watch the interview...

Several reasons prompted Obama to overthrow his defense minister

Raed valid

Washington « Jerusalem Arab »: What will change in Washington go after Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel? There are many analysts believe that the dismissal or resignation Hagel was necessary for US foreign policy catastrophic It is clear that he was a scapegoat for the need to reform the drama in the team of national security, but experts believe at the same time that the exit Hagel from the ministry will not solve the problem was to get rid of it easy because Its effect was very little contrast Susan Rice and Ben Rhodes influence or Valerie Jarrett was not part of the inner circle of the White House, but was acting in good soldier receives orders President without question however reluctantly, everyone noted that he spent his time working on the implementation of the wishes of Obama declared on return of US troops from Afghanistan and trim the defense budget.

When Hagel tried to express their opinions bold openly, His remarks immediately severe wryly of Obama and the White House especially when that said the organization «Islamic state« represents an imminent threat to the United States after a few days of statements Obama underestimated «Daash» describing them as a team athlete silly tried during which these comments are not useful forced the administration to say later that while he became Obama crew outrage.

came out and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel of administration after weeks of discussions with Obama about the role that could be played in shaping defense policy during the remaining years of the reign of Obama, but they have reached to the conclusion that it is better that there be another minister of defense would command processing against al «Islamic State». And try the White House described the decision to leave as a result of the shift in priorities in the Defense Ministry, but there are signs that tensions between Hagel and the White House, let alone attempt Hagel storming surrounding Obama, the circle to no avail as the pitfalls rhetorical repeated to take a stand against it contributed.

He acknowledged Obama aides that Hagel at the end of eventually arrived at the conviction that the way the war against al «Islamic state« currently require a major change for the project, which will paint it had hoped to accomplish during his tenure at the Ministry of Defense, according to the words of the White House has been brought Hagel for the job to carry out reform initiatives such as anti-abuse efforts sex in the ranks of the army and trim the budget and reform of nuclear establishment and the military health system and the elimination of military and strategic axis with Asia, but the threat of «Daash« issue of priorities, let alone how to deal with Iran if the negotiations had reached an impasse once and no longer those issues in the list of concerns as the former.

This prompted the conclusion Obama and Hagel to hold a series of discussions about the future of Hagel and ended things to resign with a desperate White House attempts to deny the absence of a political dispute between the Minister of Defense President or that his departure was because he was the man «inappropriate« at this stage.

Apart from the «drama «unprecedented in the White House that emerges« inner circle «narrow surrounding Obama, has appeared serious indications of political differences between Hagel and Obama was sent to Secretary of Defense in November / October last note to the national security adviser Susan Rice criticized the US administration's policy toward Syria (which memorandum addressed « Quds Al-Arabi formerly »in detail), which calls for increased focus on what needs to be done about the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who inadvertently benefit from the US campaign against« Daash ».

littered with stories in recent weeks, talking about the hard times experienced by Hagel as he tries to break through Obama's entourage, and Sen. John McCain that the resignation Hagel is an expression of frustration from the treatment he received at the White House, but experts have returned to remind remarks Robert Gates, Leon Panetta and Hillarious Clinton, who criticized the way President Obama is dealing with defense policy and said that the next books Hagel after his departure will reveal more about the criticism, especially in Syria, Iraq's foreign and defense of US policy.

Regardless of the name of the man who Sischgr post of defense minister, the decision is settled in the White House for foreign and defense policy, especially with regard to reducing the size of the US armed forces and the withdrawal of the world has gone a lot of the critics to say that if the United States adopts a parliamentary system would have been forced Obama long ago to step down, but the US system is a presidential system, and in spite of all these criticisms and expectations, it is necessary as GOP leaders said that the new candidate for the Ministry of Defense is part of the renewal of Obama's strategy to combat extremist groups and has the ability to think creatively.

Analysts, in turn, do not know very well if he can be considered a departure Hagel positive step forward, especially after the White House concerns about his ability to manage the war against militant groups only if they refer to the complete thinking about the foreign policy of Obama, but they are betting that the way Obama is thinking has not changed much and there are doubts that he would like to see more credible in the face of the Ministry of Defence.
