Burger King’s new Whopper puts the bite on U.S. taxpayers

Next time you consider chomping into a Burger King Whopper, you might think about the bite this fast food giant is trying to take out of the American taxpayer.

The company announced it will purchase beloved Canadian coffee and donut shop chain Tim Hortons. That purchase could help it dodge its U.S. tax obligations, shifting its burden to the rest of us American taxpayers.

While the prospect of avoiding taxes and raking in higher profits may sound appealing to the company's top brass, the rest of us know we'll have to make up the difference, or do with less public service as the tax revenue pool shrinks.

Burger King is pursuing the purchase as a process called a tax inversion. That is, when a U.S.-based firm buys a company in another country, and relocates its corporate headquarters. Even if most of the company's managers and employees remain in the United States, the firm can take advantage of the other country's lower tax brackets.

It's a decision that Walgreens recently mulled but dropped after American taxpayers came together in protest of the move. But since 1983, approximately 75 corporations abandoned America through inversion, and at least 10 more corporate inversions are currently underway.

AFSCME opposes these corporate tax evasion schemes. We are urging members of Congress to enact the "Stop Corporate Inversions Act of 2014" (S.2360), introduced by Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich. The measure would prevent U.S. corporations from claiming to be foreign companies unless they meet specified conditions.

We also support the Bring Jobs Home Act, introduced by Sens. John Walsh, D-Mo., and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.). The legislation would eliminate some tax incentives that corporate CEOs use to increase their profits by sending our jobs overseas.

To tell Congress to pass the "Stop Corporate Inversions Act of 2014," send them a message here!

Thousands of us company's left the USA for tax purposes

That's why there's millions of people calling for tax reductions

Then those who don't care about losing their jobs because they don't work anyway vote for the idiots that want to raise taxes and fight tax cuts

You Europeans seem to like these idiots so why don't cha offer them a free place to lay around over there oh and they do need a free benefit package too for doing nothing but organized theft off those who actually do work to provide the grocery stores and roads and housing for those mf idiots

Excellent move... tax inversion.  Corporations are looking out for their customers, stockholders and employees...  managing their debt, lowering their overhead... and increasing their bottom line... profits!   The goal is to be more profitable... offer quality products and services... and grow!   So let's see.... give more money to the government... or give more to your customers, employees and stockholders?

Want the best of both worlds?   Lower the corporate tax rate.... period!

Burger King can go hang. Oh yeah,I'll be sure not to give any of my hard earned Spondoolies to Tom Hortens . . .whatever country I happen to be in at the time.

Simple solution. Lower corporate taxes and watch mega corps from around the world flood into America. It's shameful that Canada has lower taxes than we do, and Burger King's first responsibility is to its owners, not the American government or the tax eaters our taxes pay for. Their board of directors would be derelict as managers if they didn't leave. Lower taxes would benefit mom and pop, too. Stupid article written by a stupid person who doesn't know the first thing about running a business.

I wonder, why didn't anyone say anything when GE moved to China?

They, (GE), got millions in OUR TAX DOLLARS in subsidies, as an INCENTIVE to do the move!

Yeah, and then the gov told Gibson Guitars they should move their manufacturing TO AFRICA TO AVOID being harassed by the American government in the futire.

The US has been PAYING to HELP businesses move overseas for years, since Clinton, and now all the sudden it's wrong?

IT'S BEEN WRONG THE WHOLE TIME!

Congress knew it was wrong, that's why they gave Bush full fast track privilege to negotiate NAFTA.

Obummer wanted the same to do the TPP, but after Americans found out about the slimey Bush move millions sent blast faxes to their reps, and o was denied.

I'm not condoning B K, but they are not existing on us taxpayer money like GE.

Their electrical equipment is specifically called out in most government projects, everything from turbine generators at damns, to large switchgear used at institutions,(prisons, gov buildings, and hospitals).

If you don't like BK, go somewhere else, but our own government is screwing us with GE, and hundreds of other companies.

And, don't forget about the HR visas, when considered in conjunction with the hordes of illegals they are allowing in, only a brain dead moron couldn't see they are intentionally destroying America.

I can only hope as more and more people are starting to research our governments corruption, and relationships with their select corporate "winners", that more and more will start dropping political affiliation, and start voting on the individual.

OMG, GG, those are the grossest pictures I've seen in a long time...

GG, if you can make those morsels of deliciousness for me everyday,

I will be your slave forever...

One modification is needed.

When you cut the donuts in half, flip them over

so the glaze is on the inside.

Not so messy to eat and the sweet from the glaze,

in direct contact with the bacon... HEAVEN!!!

Alright... Who let their dad out of the home?

He's going to get lost guys... c'mon... Not Cool :(

They are all a bunch of hypocrites... They are just out for themselves... Period!!!

Maggie, come on, lets get it straight. I prefer the mom and pop places too, and hole in the walls. Remember, Obama is the hypocrite, he raised the corporate tax rate to where we are not competative with any country in the world. Most importantly he created this tax inversion thing and forced it on to one of America's former icons ... Delco. Delco use to be in Ohio, while famous for  automobile batteries, they also made many parts for Detroit. I can't remember if it was for Chrysler or GM mostly. They were huge. When the big 3 hit hard times they moved to London, England on paper at Obama's urging. So cool they went, on paper. All operations are still here in the U.S. but their HQ is in London because the corporate tax rate is less. Lets remember that under Obama's watch he sold Chrysler to Fiat; they're in Italy. Then there is the iconic GE that moved to China recently.

What does it say for this administration and this country when our two faced President criminalizes citizens and companies for doing what is legal anyway. Let me explain why Obama is two faced, he is this because he called out others like Romney for legally paying only 15% in taxes on their income. When the following tax year he himself only paid 15% on the 5 million he made on book sales, etc.

Obama and socialism itself speak well about defending blue collar workers and the middle class, but under their system the middle class shrinks and the blue collar workers earn less. True dat.

Lower the corporate tax rate, doesn't have to be 12% like Ireland, or 15% like Canada, just say halve it. 18 to 20 %.

NEW REPORT: Many of America’s Most Profitable Corporations Pay Little or No Federal Income Taxes; Multinationals Pay Higher Rates Abroad Than in the U.S.

“Corporate lobbyists incessantly claim that our corporate tax rate is too high, and that it’s not ‘competitive’ with the rest of the world,” said Robert McIntyre, Director of Citizens for Tax Justice and the report’s lead author. “Our new report shows that both of these claims are false. Most of the biggest companies aren’t paying anywhere near 35 percent of their profits in taxes and far too many aren’t paying U.S. taxes at all. Most multinationals are paying lower tax rates here in the United States than they pay on their foreign operations.”

111 of the companies enjoyed at least one year in which their federal income tax was zero or less.

26 companies, including Boeing, General Electric, Priceline.com and Verizon, enjoyed negative income tax rates over the entire five-year period, despite combined pre-tax profits of $170 billion.

Of the 125 multinational companies in this sample, two-thirds paid a lower U.S. tax rate than the rate they paid to foreign governments on their foreign profits. On average, their foreign effective tax rate was 12 percent larger than their U.S. effective rate.

It isn't the corporations that are greedy... it is this government.  Collectivism and redistribution of wealth are part of the evil, corrupt ideology of the left.  Producers know this... Moochers will never understand.  It is we... the men and women of justice, independence, reason, wealth, and self-esteem... who drive the economic engine of society. What if we all left tomorrow?  No more taxes paid, no more jobs provided... and only the feckless to take our places.  We should stop supporting our destroyers.  Let's strike!

WHO IS JOHN GALT?

I don't like our tax system anymore than anyone else... I especially despise the ways they are spent.

The mega-corps have lobbiest who are very effective in getting the tax laws written in the ways that benefit THEM... not the Moms and Pops or other small businesses... and certainly not for you and me. The Moms and Pops get screwed just the same as we do.

Did you see the 0 Tax liabilities that some of the most profitable US corps are NOT paying??? Did you see that it's a big lie that they pay less over seas... that some actually pay about 12% more? The off shore benefits are coming from lower wages and less regulation in worker rights and safety.... ever hear the term "Sweat Shops"? DM is right in that the laws even give a deduction for "moving cost" over seas... that is how effective the lobbies are for corps that ask them to get legislation through. We are not out of the woods yet with PTT... the corps are still trying to push that through. (they are who wrote it in total secrecy) TPP would be the demise of American laws that protect us from "Your Pals" the giant American Corporations.

Anyone who gave +'s to dontlop for his rudeness towards Umberto... it shows what kind of ethics you have.

Lol Shabs :D

Gosh I wish I had your humor so early in the morning... at least I can still laugh. :D
