A source in the united parliamentary bloc, on Sunday evening, for obtaining a consensus on the nomination of Haider Abadi for the National Alliance.

The source told Baghdadi News, that "the consensus within the National Alliance got around to provide a substitute for Haider al-Abadi al-Maliki for prime minister, amid stiff opposition from the Nuri al-Maliki."

The source added that "a lengthy meeting occurred at the blocks of the National Alliance in the Green Zone, which agreed to provide tomorrow Abadi, a final candidate for the National Alliance."

It is said that the constitutional deadline set by the President of the Republic Fuad Masum ended at midnight on Monday without providing the biggest bloc candidate for prime minister.

BREAKING: Military Coup Rocks Iraq by Thomas Ferdousi • August 10, 2014

Iraq’s parliament just chose a new President who refused to rename Prime Minister Nouri Kamal al-Maliki to a third term. Maliki declared the move unconstitutional and his own State of Law Party pulled support from him. Now his forces are seizing government buildings in Iraq, have closed the airport, and are surrounding the Green Zone.

His speech refusing to step down occurred at midnight and was followed by the military action.

Tlar: Sources within the Rashid Hotel in central Baghdad on the detention of a large number of deputies, including the head of the new parliament in the hotel and the imposition of house arrest amid them hear the voices of intermittent fire

lojak: what we dont know at this point is who are these forces??...they could very well be security forces NOT loyal to Maliki, but sent there to anticipate problems....its waaaaay to early to jump to conclusions

luckylady: I am glad that all those troops that some said were not there are there!

There isn't an actual coup, Baghdad is calm. Maliki has raised the stakes through his statement, it's the Iraqi form of poker (or chicken)

Buttercup: But the date of that tweet, lojak, is "yesterday"....right? Since it's now 3 AM Monday, August 11th in Baghdad...And didn't things go south at midnight there? Which would have been three hours ago??? I hope for sure there really isn't a coup, but just need help getting the timeline straight. Thanks, lojak!

Investor1: From Rudlaw: 5:40pm today

@RudawEnglish: BREAKING: Source: #Iraqi presidential palace is calm and it has not been surrounded by troops loyal to PM #Maliki.

Lojak: I just dont post any article that would upset the dinar community without completely checking it out--its not fair to those who are truly just hanging on

Tlar: We all realize this is an unfolding story. Maliki is paranoid, knows he is going to be arrested, has 25 billion dollars and does control the military at this point.

He has been threatening everybody including al-Sistani in the last 24 hours and saying the fires of hell have will be let loose if the will of the people is not honored (he is referring to all the votes he stole as he thinks he has the peoples mandate in his mind).

Then we get an article saying that Massoum's house has been blown up.

Massoum threatened to quit because of threats and pressure being made by Maliki. And then security forces are spread out all over Bagdad that nobody knows for sure who controls them and the green zone is now on lockdown.

Then this article stating that the MP's staying at this hotel, the Rashid which would be many MP'S all out of towners from the Sunni areas and Kurdistan and all towns outside of Bagdad like Basra etc., which includes the new POP are all under house arrest.

It looks all the world to me like those forces Maliki said would be released on Iraq are being released by Maliki himself.

This looks to me like what it probably is, a military coup with Maliki trying to take control over the government of Iraq by force. I may be a little pre-mature guys in saying this, but if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, well you know where I am going with this. I hope I'm wrong. tlar

A western security expert based in Iraq said that Mr Maliki deployed members of the Golden Dawn militia and the elite SWAT special forces units around the International Zone prior to giving the speech.

"He was clearly anticipating a negative, possible coup-like response," said the expert, whose employer does not allow him to speak openly to the media.

Time for Seal Team 6 to go in and extract this absessed tooth. If the army is going to keep him in office then Iraq as we know it today is gone.Another Middle East country with a dictator. All of our soldiers who died fighting to give them a chance at democracy died in vain. LET NO GOOD DEAD GO UNPUNISHED.

Things do not look good for this investment right now. I may be drinking the cool aid here, but I think it still works out. It might not happen until the end of the year or early next year, it is still to early to tell. I feel Iraq has done what it needs to go international and regardless what happens they do supply the world with a good amount oil. They have put in place a stock market, have gold supplies, established a banking structure. All of this injunction to signing business deals with countries worldwide. They can not remain isolated for ever. It just comes down to getting this guy out and getting someone in that can bring the country together. But most of all, they need to save face and get out of the USD and establish themselves with other ME countries. Bottom line is - The ride is not over.

Haydar al-Abbadi Is the New Iraq PM Candidate

Haydar al-Abbadi Is the New Iraq PM Candidate

Posted by Reidar Visser on Monday, 11 August 2014 13:48

Today, what remains of the pan-Shiite National Alliance formally presented Haydar al-Abbadi of the Daawa party as their PM candidate. Abbadi will be charged by President Fuad Masum to replace the current PM, Nuri al-Maliki.

The political realities behind this move can be summarized as follows. For some weeks, pressure has been building inside Maliki’s State of Law coalition to have him changed. Finally today, factions led by Haydar al-Abbadi of the Daawa and Hussein al-Shahristani, the current deputy PM, broke with Maliki to nominate Abbadi for PM. Early reports suggests 38 Daawa MPs and 12 members of the Shahristani bloc abandoned Maliki, leaving him with the backing of only around 45 members of the original 95-member State of Law bloc. It is worth noting that the traditionally pro-Iranian Badr organization has not been enumerated among the 128 or so supporters of Abbadi.

Constitutionally and legally, today’s developments also clear the air. Until yesterday, Maliki could plausibly plead the case that the president should have charged him with forming the government before the official deadline expired. However, today’s action by the Shiite alliance showed that Maliki’s claim to represent the largest bloc no longer has any basis, because State of Law has disintegrated. Accordingly, Maliki’s promise to bring the case before the Iraqi federal supreme court will be of academic interest only. Any attempt by him to challenge the nomination through other means than the court will be profoundly anti-democratic.

Haydar al-Abbadi is a former finance minister who is well liked by groups outside the Daawa and State of Law, who elected him as deputy speaker for the new parliament earlier. He will now have 30 days to present his cabinet for approval by the Iraqi parliament with an absolute majority.
