Integrity and Courage: Part 1

Chicago was hot with gangsters in the 1940's and one stood out as the most empowered ruthless of all. While this man had a few soft spots they were almost never seen. He surrounded himself with men that would go to the grave for him. Al Capone ruled Chicago with an iron fist and his network of crime was increasingly hard to get a grip on. He ruled everything from bootleg booze to prostitution to murder.

In the early days he found a young lawyer who was bright, knew the laws and how to skirt them. Big Al sought this guy out and it took many times before he would come to work for just him. Easy Eddie as he was fondly nicknamed was well taken care of. He was the main reason Big Al stayed out of trouble with the law. It wasn't because Al tried to avoid the police, he branched out in more and more underground business taking over by force. Millions of dollars were rolling in and anyone who dared stand in the way was gunned down and yet each time the law thought they had Big Al red handed, Easy Eddie was able to work miracles and charges would fade. Big Al bought a lavish mansion that covered one whole block with iron gates and armed guards. Soon Eddie was got married to his long time sweetheart and had a son.

Eddie got paid big bucks, more than he would ever make just being a straight lawyer for the public. Not only was the money big but Big Al made sure that special dividends was shared with his friend and lawyer. Easy Eddie knew that even though he did his job very well, If he ever lost a case that Big Al would have him executed.

Eddie loved his son and knew he was a gift. He saw to it that his son had top of the line cloth's and later fine cars and college. He was set, would never want for nothing.  During his sons early teen years something kept bothering Eddie, he could give him material things but when he thought about teaching him right from wrong and how to have some integrity about himself, he knew he was lacking and this bothered him. How would he teach him this while he was involved deep into organized crime. This thought got to weighing heavy on his mind. How could he instill a good name for his son without the attachment of the underworld.

It wasn't long until Easy Eddie reached a difficult discussion. He had to shed the underworld associated name. He wanted to rectify the wrongs he had done. He knew going against Big Al would infuriate him and put a mark on his head. The love of his son was much bigger than if he would be killed or not. He went to the authorities and tell all the facts about Big Al "Scarface" Capone and hoped he would have enough time to clean up his tarnished name and give his son dignity. Not only would this information bring down Big Al but all the facts he knew about his Mob dealings and who murdered who.

So he testified in the crimes brought against the big underworld. People cheered because the long held suffering and fear that he brought to the city was finally coming to an end. Easy Eddie's life lasted about a year when he was murdered in a hell of gunfire with Machine Guns on a lonely Chicago street. As Eddie looked to the Heavens he knew he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer at the greatest price he could pay.

Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, and a poem clipped from a magazine and this is what it said:

The clock of life is wound but once and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop. Will it be in early hour or late at night. Now is the only moment you have. Live, love and toll with a will. Place no faith in time, for the clock one day may stand still.

Even though and up coming bright lawyer had his head filled with lavish gifts, it all changed when his son came along. His son was the happiness he needed to break away form the life he had even under dire demands. At the last Easy Eddie broke away and reset his life knowing that any day could be his las
