umbertino
Italian boats have rescued nearly 3,000 migrants trying to reach Europe in the past 24 hours - as Italy's government said almost as many migrants had arrived so far this year as in the whole of 2013 AFP 4:35PM BST 31 May 2014 Italy's navy said on Saturday that it has picked up nearly 3,000 migrants attempting the perilous journey across the Mediterranean by boat in the last 24 hours. The latest figures, announced on the navy's official Twitter feed, highlighted the scale of the problem just days after Italy's government said almost as many migrants had arrived so far this year as in the whole of 2013. The navy said it had picked up around 1,300 migrants on Saturday as part of a major ongoing operation to save the lives of thousands of immigrants heading for Europe in overcrowded and rickety boats. On Friday navy vessels plucked 1,443 people from boats, one of which was carrying 264 children, it said. Another 200 were picked up near Lampedusa, the tiny Italian island which was the scene of a double tragedy last year when more than 400 migrants died trying to reach Europe's shores. La Repubblica daily said most of the migrants were Syrian and Egyptian, speaking of "an exodus without end towards the coast of Sicily". Italy has long borne the brunt of migrants making the crossing from North Africa to Europe, but EU border agency Frontex says there has been a significant rise in numbers in recent months. The Italian government this week put the number of migrant arrivals at over 39,000 so far this year – not far off the 43,000 registered in the whole of 2013. Many are asylum seekers from Eritrea, Somalia and Syria, and most are picked up by Italy's navy. Earlier this month, however, at least 14 died when a boat sank between Libya and Italy. Libya has long been a springboard for Africans seeking a better life in Europe and the number of illegal departures from its shores is rising due to clement weather conditions and growing lawlessness. waterman13
It has to be a large strain on the Northern Mediterranean States to cope with all these people fleeing Africa. Wm13
Francie26
God bless them!! How fortunate we are to have been born in the USA and in Italy and other free European countries. Sadly, many of those who migrate want to bring much of the worst of their old country with them, to the detriment of the country to which they flee. And sadder still, many of those ideas are religion-instigated and driven. If free countries are willing to allow these people permanent refuge (and only if they are), they should make it clear to these immigrants, "we will allow you to stay only as long as you obey our laws and value our principles. When you stop doing that, even if it is at the behest of your religion, we will take you back to where you came from and drop you off. And you will never again be allowed to enter our country." Then they may have to follow through and return some people for a while to make it clear that this will be done every time it happens, and to make sure they know they know they won't be coming to just another version of their same old life. It will be to our life-style, our beliefs, our country. The problem is, when they bring their old ways and ideas to the new country, they often change the new country and set it on a path to become all they hated and left behind when they fled. I don't want to offer my home to someone who comes into it and tries to destroy my life so they can live their life their way in my space. Their way to live has already proven to be badly flawed.

These people dont want to do that, they want to change our country to be like where they just come from. look at the problems they are having in Dearborn, MI. I have heard they have completely taken control of that region. They are trying to do the same thing in Texas, they are smart enough to know where they can have there battles. the sad part is they are winning these battles right now. We have to keep a close Eye on these subversives. They will not stop until they get that sharia law here. The ones in Texas have been to federal court here they were charged with supporting terror , they have went a little deeper underground and keeping a low profile here , which scares me. I know their up to something, and as usual it will be a reaction to what ever they pull!JMHO
