Sentinel7
Sen. Ted Cruz Issues Challenge to McCain on Debt Ceiling Fight Posted 05.23.13 by Greg Campbell, TPNN Contributor Tea Party Senator Ted Cruz came out swinging on Thursday against the moderate Republican establishment or, more specifically, moderate Republican Senator John McCain. Tensions have been high in the Senate amongst moderates and conservatives as they debate the debt ceiling and the possibility of it being raised yet again. McCain has led the charge against fiscal conservatives who are working to block conferees that are favored by moderate Republicans to debate the issue. McCain scolded conservatives on Tuesday, saying, “For four years, four years, we complained about the fact that the majority leader … would refuse to bring a budget to the floor of the United States Senate. What [do] we on my side of the aisle keep doing? We don’t want a budget unless — unless — we put requirements on the conferees that are absolutely out of line and unprecedented.” He also called the conservative stance “a little bizarre.” Tea Party Senator Ted Cruz countered McCain’s notion on Wednesday, saying, “The senior senator from Arizona urged this body to trust the Republicans. Let me be clear, I don’t trust the Republicans and I don’t trust the Democrats.” Cruz explained that weak-willed Republicans are partly to blame for the fiscal crises and the national debt that is nearly $17 trillion. “Unfortunately, one of the reasons we got into this mess is because a lot of Republicans were complicit in this spending spree and that’s why so many Americans are disgusted with both sides of this house. … And every Republican who stands against holding the line here is really saying, let’s give the Democrats a blank check to borrow any money they want with no reforms, no leadership to fix the problem.” McCain has alleged that only a “small number of senators” are holding up the process of assigning conferees to debate the debt ceiling issue. Cruz denied this on Thursday and issued a challenge to McCain. “There may be more ‘wacko birds’ in the Senate than is suspected,” Cruz said, recalling the term used by McCain to describe Tea Party senators. Cruz then suggested that McCain circulate a letter to the GOP conference claiming that Republicans support allowing Senate Democrats to raise the debt limit with a simple majority. Cruz offered that if McCain could obtain a majority of the GOP conference to sign such a letter, “I will offer here and now to go to a home game of my Houston Astros wearing an Arizona Diamondbacks hat. But I stand in complete comfort that I will not find myself in that situation because I don’t believe it’s a right that a majority of Republicans in this body have given up the fight on spending.”

10 YEARS LATER
McCain has been part of the problem for a long, long time. I take nothing away from his military service; his politics are a different matter.
