Former Gov. Charlie Crist: Here's why I'm backing Barack Obama

By Charlie Crist, Special to the Times

In Print: Sunday, August 26, 2012

I’ve studied, admired and gotten to know a lot of leaders in my life. Across Florida, in Washington and around the country, I've watched the failure of those who favor extreme rhetoric over sensible compromise, and I've seen how those who never lose sight of solutions sow the greatest successes.

As America prepares to pick our president for the next four years — and as Florida prepares once again to play a decisive role — I'm confident that President Barack Obama is the right leader for our state and the nation. I applaud and share his vision of a future built by a strong and confident middle class in an economy that gives us the opportunity to reap prosperity through hard work and personal responsibility. It is a vision of the future proven right by our history.

We often remind ourselves to learn the lessons of the past, lest we risk repeating its mistakes. Yet nearly as often, our short-term memory fails us. Many have already forgotten how deep and daunting our shared crisis was in the winter of 2009, as President Obama was inaugurated. It was no ordinary challenge, and the president served as the nation's calm through a historically turbulent storm.

The president's response was swift, smart and farsighted. He kept his compass pointed due north and relentlessly focused on saving jobs, creating more and helping the many who felt trapped beneath the house of cards that had collapsed upon them.

He knew we had to get people back to work as quickly as possible — but he also knew that the value of a recovery lies in its durability. Short-term healing had to be paired with an economy that would stay healthy over the long run. And he knew that happens best by investing in the right places.

President Obama invested in our children's schools because he believes a good education is a necessity, not a luxury, if we're going to create an economy built to last. He supported more than 400,000 K-12 teachers' jobs, and he is making college more affordable and making student loans, like the ones he took out, easier to pay back.

He invested in our runways, railways and roads. President Obama knows a reliable infrastructure that helps move people to work and helps businesses move goods to market is a foundation of growth.

And the president invested in our retirement security by strengthening Medicare. The $716 billion in savings his opponents decry today extended the life of the program by nearly a decade and are making sure taxpayer dollars aren't wasted in excessive payments to insurance companies or fraud and abuse. His opponents would end the Medicare guarantee by creating a voucher that would raise seniors' costs by thousands of dollars and bankrupt the program.

We have more work to do, more investments to make and more waste to cut. But only one candidate in this race has proven a willingness to navigate a realistic path to prosperity.

As Republicans gather in Tampa to nominate Mitt Romney, Americans can expect to hear tales of how President Obama has failed to work with their party or turn the economy around.

But an element of their party has pitched so far to the extreme right on issues important to women, immigrants, seniors and students that they've proven incapable of governing for the people. Look no further than the inclusion of the Akin amendment in the Republican Party platform, which bans abortion, even for rape victims.

The truth is that the party has failed to demonstrate the kind of leadership or seriousness voters deserve.

Pundits looking to reduce something as big as a statewide election to a single photograph have blamed the result of my 2010 campaign for U.S. Senate on my greeting of President Obama. I didn't stand with our president because of what it could mean politically; I did it because uniting to recover from the worst financial crisis of our lifetimes was more important than party affiliation. I stood with our nation's leader because it was right for my state.

President Obama has a strong record of doing what is best for America and Florida, and he built it by spending more time worrying about what his decisions would mean for the people than for his political fortunes. That's what makes him the right leader for our times, and that's why I'm proud to stand with him today.

Charlie Crist is the former Republican governor of Florida and previously was elected as a state senator, education commissioner and attorney general. He currently is registered as no party affiliation. Crist wrote this column exclusively for the Tampa Bay Times.

Crist was a turn coat. He was elected as a republican but after the election it became obvious he was anything but republican. He was a far left liberal who just ran on the republican ticket to get elected. He was a terrible governor for our state almost run out of office by the voters who elected him and certainly not someone with much influence in Florida to swing votes to Obama.

It sounds impressive on the surface that an ex-governor who was republican is siding with Obama. However for those who really know Crist and his history, its a joke and just more political double talk to swing the uninformed.

His rhetoric in this piece is straight out of the journals of political ad writing that is far from the truth.

Obama is destroying the middle class but by using diversion to hide it by focusing on his class warfare ploy against the rich to make it look like he is for the little guy. His over-regulation, endless spending with no plan for fiscal responsibility, trillions in money printing that will debase our currency and create run away inflation, his endless welfare entitlement state, ect... are bankrupting our country and will be the destruction of the middle class.

So, Charlie Crist lied on the campaign trail about his republican stances according to some here. So he is a flip flopper. So, can one be so sure that Romney won't do the same as Crist considering his lengthy record of flip flopping?

no one can be sure. but I am sure he will be better then Obama.

Flip-flopper Crist is an embarrasment to Florida.

(and THAT's saying something... been here lately?)

He lives a lie... A BIG lie.

Friend of mine worked at the restaurant he used to eat at almost every day...

knows 'stuff' about him and shared with me & I believe this friend's take on this 'guy'....

explains quite a bit about this lying opportunist.

Take anything he says with a grain of salt --- or less.

Better yet, just ignore him. He's inconsequential. Of no merit & even less value. <_<

Crist is a dou che bag. He went from governor to working for the biggest ambulance chasing law firm in the Southeast US.

***///

See, what'd I tell ya....

And this 'law firm' is a dedicated bunch of left wingers - huge DEM supporters, no less.

Their only redeeming value is that they like dogs. Otherwise, scheisterville. <_<

Thank you for a kind and reasonable response.

I can agree that on economic policy, Romney may be better. But it's the rest (Patriot Act, wars, etc.) that I see them being the same and in that sense, I find it hard to trust either. Just my opinion.

Carrello,

Republicans know that Crist truly is not a Republican and it is a shame that he is being paraded as one. He decided to run for US Senate in Florida as an Independent and lost to Marco Rubio. Surely Democrats know this.

I hear you rightsonword.

Most in the political world are all about doing what will give them the most support and what is politically expedient form themselves.

Even Obama was for same sex marriage as a senator, changed his stance when he decided to run for president and now has changed his stance again to being for it. Talk about a flip flopper!

Crist doesn't know his butt from a hole in the ground so I doubt his article will have any impact on the Florida vote.

Sometimes you have to vote for the lesser of two evils unfortunately. Even though Romney was probably my last choice on the republican ticket, he is definitely better than our current administration on a number of points.

The question is very simple simple. Are be better off now than 4 years ago? AND the answer is..... NO!

and since the answer is no then the solution is simple simple... fire obama and hire someone else who can get the job done.

In real life where the rest of us live, it is a well known and simple fact...if you give someone 4 years to do a job and they fail then fire them and hire someone else. Simple simple

Oh yes and one thing we do know about Romney. He actually turned a failing Olympics into a paying proposition. That is quite a feat in itself.

I agree with you. Romney was probably my last choice but I am excited about his choice in VP's and it does appear that he is serious about getting our country back on track. However I am not just voting for Romney but I am voting against obama and where is has and is leading our beloved USA.

Thank you for the kind response. I'm a Floridian, so I know about Charlie Crist and you are right about him, though I'm not sure he's the super turncoat he's being made out to be simply because he didn't go along with party lines in every aspect. But yes, he's a notified flip flopper.

I don't know, though. I understand your position in voting for the lesser of two evils, but in my opinion, it's still voting for evil. Every election, we are stuck voting for the lesser of two evils precisely because we always choose to vote for the lesser of two evils, thus those that are "evil" always stay in power. We have to change the routine, in my opinion. Perhaps I'm wrong, and if I am, it's the same story every four years with no noticeable change in American policy. But if I am right, we can bring real, needed change to the states.

Every war has battles that are lost. But sometimes we have to lose a battle to win the war.
