UN General Expresses Regret On Iraq-Kuwait Progress; Hopeful Obligations Will Be Achieved By Year End.

2012-06-16 11:56:54

BAGHDAD (Iba) was Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon expressed regret yesterday for lack of tangible progress in the issue of missing Kuwaitis and Kuwaiti property in Iraq.
He recommended Ki-moon in his semi-annual on these issues to the UN Security Council, to continue to fund the international coordinator Supreme Gennady Tarsov until the end of the year.

WTO talks broke down last week & UNSC talks break down as Iraq comes to the table unprepared once again. Can Iraq meet the end of the year deadline? Will it have all it's minsters named & seated by then? Finally, will no confidence be resolved & key Bills passed by year's end? Your thoughts on this.

My opinion- finding dead Kuwait bodies\bones and missing Kuwait archives is just an excuse. Yes- these are sanctions listed in Chapter 7. However, UNSC is just using them as an excuse for keepine Iraq in Ch. 7. UNSC wants a fully seated democratic gov't.

Let's be objectve. If you sat on the UNSC, would you release Iraq from Ch. 7 with a non-functioning, non-seated GOI? Current situation- no power sharing and they all want power. Until this government is resolved and truly democratic- NO Ch. 7 release and no HCL?

This could take years- I hope not!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree. Iraq must show a willingness to get passed the no confidence & seat the remaining ministers. As long as Iraqis have no faith in government, nothing will be resolved. Right now Parliament is in no hurry to form a new government to get key bills passed.

Maliki is more interested in Iran's needs than his own people. He's working on a UN package to get Iran sanctions lifted.

A lot of work must be accomplished to be ready by the end of the year. Iraq may not be up to the challenge. They can't even agree to get a few more ministers seated. Without a full working Parliament some bills just won't get passed.

I agree Luigi. Seems to me they haven't even tried to do anything until the Americans started to pull out. They need to quit getting "breastfed" (excuse the example) by other countries and start getting on the bandwagon. Why should they do the work if others are doing it for them? People need to realize this. GO RV !!! B)

Agree. The UNSC has made it clear, the end of the year. It's giving Iraq a clear cut timeframe.

In life you can absolutely count on one thing, - everything can turn around in one day, in one minute sometimes. Don't you dare to give up, - you might be a moment away from a windfall.

Nothing surprising here, but I believe that Iraq can still RV and move forward with their economic reforms, ascend to trading status within the WTO, and then be released from ch7 in December.

The WTO turned down Iraq's request last week. Iraq must first take care of it's affairs before it can be reinstated back into the WTO.
