RUSSIA SLAMS ATTEMPTS TO USE KURDS IN GEOPOLITICAL GAMES Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov gives a speech during the Munich Security Conference on February 17, 2018 in Munich, southern Germany. Thomas KIENZLE / AFP 2 hours ago Views 991 SULAIMANI — Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov slammed attempts to use the Kurds in a geopolitical game, calling it “wrong” to use their aspirations. Speaking at the opening of Middle East conference of the Valdai Club on Monday (February 19), Lavrov said Russia supports the Kurds’ desire to live in accordance with their traditions and customs as well as their centuries-long glorious history. "At the same time, we believe this is wrong that these aspirations of the Kurdish people are used by some persons for their geopolitical goals, which neither have any relation to the interests of the Kurds nor to the interests of regional security,” Lavrov added, according to Russian News Agency TASS. "Now we are observing the attempt of involving the Kurds in a game that contradicts their interests. We call on everyone, who is involved in these processes, to stop and start agreeing based on the balance of interests rather than on the basis of a wish to outperform someone speculating on the Kurdish aspirations.” Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed sympathy with the Kurdish people, TASS reported. "Unfortunately, we see short-sighted attempts of the United States to play geopolitical games that harm the Kurds,” he said. Kurds have been denied basic rights and self-governance by ruling parties for decades. They have proved to be the most effective anti-Islamic State (ISIS) force in Syria and Iraq.
