KRP Responds to Maliki's Threats, Undervalues Them as Propaganda Iraqi VP Maliki proposed to use force against the Kurdistan Region to abort referendum efforts Basnews English 30/05/2017 - 19:05 Kurdistan ERBIL— Iraqi Vice President Nouri al-Maliki's statements and threats against the Kurdistan Region and its President Masoud Barzani are "inappropriate," and have no value, said Umed Sabah, the spokesperson for Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP) in a statement. In an interview with Beirut-based al-Akhbari paper on Tuesday, Maliki stated that Barzani is intending to establish the Great Kurdistan state and that he must be stopped by “force if needed.” "Maliki has allowed himself to talk over the events and the rights of people of Kurdistan according to his mood," Umed Sabah wrote in his statement, adding "Maliki is used to hostility with people of Kurdistan and exploits it as elections propaganda." "But in reality neither him, nor the people who follow his words, is of any interest for us and their views have no value." KRP spokesperson also questioned former PM Maliki's authenticity, voicing his surprise that "a person who became a plague to Iraq, the source of defeat and catastrophe, and the growth of terrorism is not ashamed of talking." "A person like him [Maliki] who ruined Iraq should better terminate his life," the statement said, accusing the two-term PM runner of also causing widespread sectarianism, corruption and money-laundry trends in the country. Sabah further invited Maliki to try to enforce his threats, saying "bring it on." "Earlier enemies far stronger and superior [than Maliki] tried themselves and kneeled to the determination of the people of Kurdistan and faced obnoxious fate." In his interview with al-Akhbari paper, Maliki said President Barzani is aware of his opposition to Kurdistan independence, therefore, he has said “if Maliki returns to power I will declare independence." Maliki added if the Kurdistan Region wants to separate, it should do so within the borders drawn by the former Iraqi regime led by Saddam Hussein. Current Iraqi VP also strongly opposed the referendum in Kirkuk province, saying "It is not his [Barzani’s] right to hold a referendum on secession or self-determination [in Kirkuk], arguing that the constitution says that Iraq is a federal republic, and Kurds are part of the Federal Republic of Iraq." Countering these remarks, KRP spokesperson wrote the preface to Iraqi constitution clearly refers to commitment to the constitution as the condition and guarantee to protect the territorial unity of the country. "It was Maliki who violated the constitution and rendered it meaningless ….Therefore, someone who infringed on the constitution should not talk about it and exploit it [for his own interests]," KRP statement said, stressing Kurdistan Region will pursue its appeal for independence.
