As a trucker I've traveled to Canada extensively, and I've never once exchanged my dollars for Canadian funds. But I did purchase many things in Canada, and once I even bought an expensive painting then had it shipped to my home in America. How did I manage to buy all those things without using the Canadian dollar? Simple I used my Visa card, my Master Card, and even my bank deposit card. The issuing card company made the conversions for me. Just saying.

Floridian, one aspect of this article I'm reading is that the dinar is being dispensed from ATMs, which would mean banks are putting more dinar on the street. Perhaps there is a tighter number of MO, M1 dinar that we know. "...means to be ruffled shop and withdraw from any ATM in Iraqi dinars and they are removing the currency..." If Iraqis need a wheel barrel of dinar to buy a loaf of bread, how could they possibly keep ATMs loaded to provide cash withdrawal services with any efficiency, which is one important issue Iraqis are looking for from the banks. 😊

So when I used to trade in the forex market I would trade any currency pairs that were legal to trade electronically but the first step to do so was I had to convert my electronic USD into electronic gold so that the electronic transactions could convert to any currency and the trade would take place instantly. So I'm guessing that by them being able to use their cards internationally that they are basically doing the same thing through the card. If you are buying from Amazon in the EU it is transferring your IQD into gold then to Euro's and so on depending on the Amazon platform you are shopping with. Also I believe this is important for security as when the revaluation takes place no one will be caught in the street pushing a wheelbarrow of cash to buy some chicken and chips...

This is the point I am stuck on. How in the world is Iraq going to do this in a "closed economy" with once a day corrupt currency auctions? I would think these transactions would be real time in an "open economy". Theoretically, these transactions could be occurring through the United States Treasury (UST) so the transactions could be converting IQD to USD and then the USD is converted to the Foereign Country Currency where the purchases occur. However: So, it looks like the CBI is converting directly from the IQD of the Iraqi Citizens to the Foreign Country Currency where the purchases are made. If the USD is not the medium of exchange through the CBI then I would assume the IQD has gone international converting at the CBI directly to the foreign currency rate(s). Well, OK, this is Iraq and as President Donald J Trump said (something like), "These are the most accomplished bunch of thieves I have ever seen". So, they are a couple days into their five (5) day Eid al-Fitr celebration or something so maybe Tuesday or Wednesday of next week everybody will hear, "SURPRISE!!!"!!! International Banking cards are not "New" to Iraq, salaries are being paid on them so why all the fuss over an "International Card" I don't get it. Yes Iraq is moving forward in aspects of banking but this doesn't mean an RV however it is a move in the right direction. Wouldn't that mean the dinar that the bank is collecting is (soon to be) worth more than the dollars they are paying out? Otherwise, why would they do it?

DOD, I agree with regarding the cashless society and the No Wheel Barrel result. My point was regarding the ATMs not being capable of dispensing the IQD at the current rate and volume. You can only fill the ATMs with so much dinar before they need to be refilled, and the security involved to do that would be intense alone. If the IQD has a higher value (nod nod wink wink) and therefore less physical volume, the ATMs could dispense IQD in an efficient way and be a valuable tool for bank customers. Otherwise, the current value makes ATM withdrawals a joke, but it certainly would drive anyone accustomed to using and needing cash to get a debit card of some sort.

Carrello, I think that part of this education process of the CBI to the civilians is to help bring them into the 21st century mindset of not carrying cash. When the light comes on to the average Iraqi that they do not need to carry ANY Dinar with them to buy a loaf of bread I think they have arrived. Think about it, how many dollars do you carry to buy a loaf of bread, a 20 dollar bill can last over a month in my wallet. When the CBI an the banks can teach these folks that the card their carrying will not only buy a loaf of bread but a gallon of milk an vegetables, the need for them to carry around a wheel barrel of Dinar will be gone, thus cashless society....

I think the confusion comes from the fact that different forex sites have different currencies available to trade. After Saddam, Iraq created the new currency (which is still in use and which is what we all hold) but the country was under sanctions and the CBI deliberately devalued that currency so it would be cheaper to rebuild their country. Because of the sanctions and low value, the dinar was really not worth dealing with so pretty much all the forex traders stopped trading in it. I think Floridian makes a valid point. The fact that the IQD is starting to be added to the list of tradeable currencies is a good sign. I don't think it's a guarantee that the RV is about to happen, but it does indicate that at least some people think that it will become more valuable. Whether these people are correct remains to be seen. But for us, it's at least some validation that other people believe good things are ahead for this currency. First, President Barack Obama failed to disclose to Congress the existence of secret side deals on inspections when he transmitted the nuclear accord to Capitol Hill. (They were only uncovered by chance when then-Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) learned about them during a meeting with International Atomic Energy Agency officials in Vienna.) Then, we learned that the Obama administration had secretly sent a plane to Tehran loaded with $400 million in Swiss francs, euros and other currencies on the same day Iran released four American hostages, which was followed by two more secret flights carrying another $1.3 billion in cash. Now, in a bombshell revelation, Republicans on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, led by Sen. Not only that, Senate investigators found that officials from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which regulates U.S. banks’ compliance with U.S. sanctions law, “encouraged two U.S. correspondent banks to convert the funds.” The report says “both banks declined to complete the transaction due to compliance, reputational, and legal risks associated with doing business with Iran.” The Post’s Alan Sipress and Karen DeYoung explain how President Trump’s decision might affect an already tense Middle East.(Sarah Parnass, Joyce Lee/The Washington Post) Then, after issuing the license, the Obama administration explicitly denied to Congress that it had done so. The Administration has not been and is not planning to grant Iran access to the U.S. financial system.” This was patently false. Investigators also found internal State Department emails, in which officials admitted that the Obama administration had “exceeded our JCPOA commitments” by authorizing Iranian access to U.S. banks. Furthermore, the report reveals that the Obama administration put on more than 200 “roadshows” across the world where they encouraged foreign financial institutions to do business with Iran “as long as the rest of the world left the United States out of it.” According to the report, during a roadshow in London, OFAC Director John Smith “downplayed the likelihood of any future penalties or fines,” telling the audience “that 95% of the time OFAC sees an apparent violation it results in a simple warning letter or no enforcement action.” In other words, the Obama administration: (1) told Congress it would not allow Iran access to U.S. financial institutions; (2) issued a special license allowing Iran to do exactly that; (3) unsuccessfully pressured U.S. banks to help Iran; (4) lied to Congress and the American people about what it had done; (5) admitted in internal emails that these efforts “exceeded” U.S. obligations under the nuclear deal; (6) sent officials, including bank regulators, around the world to urge foreign financial institutions to do business with Iran; and (7) promised that they would get nothing more than a slap on the wrist for violating U.S. sanctions. How bad is this? Remove the words “Obama” and “Iran” and replace them with “Trump” and “Russia” and imagine the outrage that would ensue over the same revelations. I think Sectarian Strife/Violence leading to Civil War is nipping at the heels here that would push this off for some time. I don't think the Good Guys inside and outside Iraq will want or let this happen. What the Iraqis need and want is to get the show on the road for the reconstruction, construction, economic development, and foreign investment. The progress and prospects toward realizing financial prosperity are every increasing with ever increasing momentum so this could be a powder keg if it goes South. Once the Opiate Of Prosperity is injected into the Iraqis, I suspect other crises will subside and internally National Reconciliation will be highly successful and prosperous for all.
